We have about one month left before we have a three-year-old in our hands!
Language: As Toddler Checkers inches closer and closer to the 3-year mark, her language continues to explode which has resulted in a number of funny conversations between us and our not-yet-3-year-old.
On friendship…
Me: Aliya, is Dempsey your friend?
A: No, he’s a boy.
Me: Is Sebastian your friend?
A: No, he’s a boy too. But, Noelle is my friend! She’s a girl, like Aliya!
Daddy would be so proud.
Me: Aliya, stop jumping on the bed.
A: Oh, because I fall down and bump my head?
Me: Yes.
A: Doctor said no more monkeys jumping on the bed?
On names…
Me: What’s your name?
A: Aliya!
Me: What’s Daddy’s name?
A: Kevin!
Me: What’s my name?
A: Oh, you’re just Mommy.
Potty Talk…
Me: Mommy has to go potty.
A: Are you going to pee in your pants?
Me: If I don’t go to the potty soon, I will pee in my pants.
A: Ew, Mommy. That’s disgusting.
Post-Discipline…
A: I’m sad.
Me: Why are you sad?
A: Because you’re mad at me, Mommy.
<Cue puppy dog eyes and lower-lip>
This kid knows how to work it.
Most-used excuses to get out of doing anything…
1) I’m so tired, Mommy.
2) I can’t, because my tummy is hurting.
Language explosion has been fantastic because it allows us to reason more with Aliya, and she is also able to express herself and communicate with us using her words (vs. crying or screaming).
Sleep: Sleep has become more of a challenge since we recently transitioned Toddler Checkers into her big girl bed. I’m not sure if we just had too many transitions at once with a new home, new room, and new bed, but now we face a challenge just about every day during nap time and bed time.
Cognitive Development: Recently, Aliya has been into tracing letters and numbers, putting puzzles together, and more into reading books. We have noticed she has a strong memory, remembering experiences from months ago, remembering stories, people, etc. We’ve also been reading her more books about becoming a big sister, so she can start learning about babies and what happens when the new baby comes home.
I hope to spend more quality time with her these next couple of months while we are still a family of three. She is quickly becoming a little girl before my very eyes, which makes me happy and sad all at the same time!

The language explosion is so cool. It’s starting here, finally, and I’m loving it. but of course it’s coming with a whole new boundary testing challenge that can be so overwhelming.
