I found a new favorite stick sunblock and I had to share!
Since we go through so much sunblock during the warm months, I like to try different brands so I can find my holy grail sunblock. My ideal sunblock has a thin consistency, blends easily, doesn’t leave white streaks, and has safe ingredients that provide great sun protection. I haven’t found one that’s perfect yet, but I have found products that we’re happy with. Since there are so many sunblocks that rate a 1 on the EWG website (there are 149), I stick to them when it comes to sunblock for the kids even if many consider the EWG to be overly conservative in their ratings. This is what we’ve been using on the kids and us this year, as well as a review of some other brands we’ve tried!
1) AllTerrain Phineas and Herb SPF30 Spray ($13.41) – This is the latest addition to our sunblock arsenal. I’d been looking for a safe sunblock spray for a while because they’re just so easy to use. I even spray some in my hands and rub in on the kids’ faces. This is my go-to for daily use because time is limited when we’re getting ready for school in the mornings and this is by far the fastest way to get sunblock on them. The kids don’t mind this at all since it blends in easily, dries clear, and I don’t have to rub it into their faces and bodies like I would have to with a cream.
2) Thinkbaby SPF 50+ ($12.23) – I bought a tube of this last summer and liked its creamy consistency and how it blended well. When the kids are going to the pool or beach, I feel like the thick, creamy sunblock provides better protection than the spray so I like to use this when we need a lot of protection. I’ve tried many, many, many different sunblocks (all rated 1 on the EWG) and so far this is my favorite.
3) Elemental Sunstick ($8.49) – This is the latest stick sunblock I’ve tried, and it’s hands down my favorite. It’s unscented, and goes on easily and clear! I’ve tried several other brands including the Badger SPF35 Face Stick ($6.00) which is also great and affordable, but it goes on white. I like to keep a sunblock stick in the diaper bag for reapplications on the face throughout the day, and when we’re at the pool/beach. It’s much easier to get on faces and the kids don’t mind it nearly as much as regular sunblock — they even want to apply it themselves.
4) EltaMD UV Clear SPF46 ($23.00) – This has a 3 rating on the EWG website and is a little pricey, but I don’t use it on the kids. I would often go without sunblock because of the thick texture and how it would leave my skin looking white. The consistency of this is so light, blends easily, and it dries clear. Now I have no problems wearing sunblock every day since this is so easy to apply.
Two other brands we’ve tried include Adorable Baby ($24.99) and Babo Botanicals Clear Zinc SPF 30 ($11.19). Both are supposed to dry clear and Adorable Baby did a good job of that, but it felt a little greasy and left us shiny. Babo Botanicals is also supposed to dry clear but it has a thick, sticky consistency that was difficult to rub in, and it often left us looking more white than other sunblocks.
There are tons of sunblocks out there that provide great sun protection. I think the most important thing is just that you’re using daily sun protection!
What sunblocks are your favorite for you and your little one?

We really like the thinkbaby sunscreen too. we used allterrain last year but I had trouble with the spray applicator after a few weeks of use. We are also using kidscounter super duper sunscreen, it’s very thin and easy to spread.

I’ve been eyeing thinkbaby… I’m going to have to make the plunge and just try it I think!

We use Babo botanicals. The stick rubs in very easily and is totally clear. I have one in every bag, purse, etc. I don’t find the cream overly sticky (though maybe a little?), but it is a little harder to rub in than non-zinc sunscreens. Love the smell – kinda green apple like. We’ve only tried one other brand, but I can’t remember what it was!

J has allergic reactions to any sunscreen with zinc oxide, so we are extremely limited. California baby does the trick- it’s the only one I’ve found that the active ingredient is 100% titanium dioxide.

We’re using babyganics again this year because I needed some ASAP and Target was the only place I had time to get to. I really want to try something new though. CA baby was too thick for my preference, but babyganics absorbs pretty quickly.

My hands down favorite is Burn Out gel https://www.burnoutsun.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=11 I especially love that it’s clear and so water resistant.

We just started using Honest sunscreen and I’m disappointed. It’s so thick and feels greasy. It’s hard to rub in on a wiggly toddler. Thank you for these reviews!

We use Think Baby and I love it!! Goes on smooth and doesn’t smell weird at all. I’m interested in the spray on AllTerrain one though!

For Elta, skincarerx has great sales sometimes. Right now they’re giving a 50% off rebate on all sunscreen purchases! I’ve gotten rebates from them before… they take forever to come but they do come. And, if you have an FSA or HSA, you can get reimbursed since it’s over SPF factor requirement and broad spectrum.

I’m wondering about your comment of using sunblock before school. I’ve read that sunblock needs reapplied after 90 minutes, so I struggle a bit with putting it on every day, even for myself. It just seems that as I get out the door and start my day, it will be time to reapply within an hour. Not the easiest thing for a kid to do at school. Curious as to how people handle this.

@kim i still figure it’s best to have some on than none, and since they’re not sweating i figure they’re still getting protection.
@StrawberryBee: you’re welcome!
@irene: thanks good to know!

Oh I need to buy some sunblock so this is great! But is Elements baby safe? If they say it’s good for kids, is it safe to say that it’s also OK for young babies?
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
@Mrs. Pencil: you can’t use sunblock on babies younger than 6 months. but safe for 6 months+!

oooh… good to know! I had no idea. haha! Good thing you told me!

I’ll have to try that sunstick! That’s definitely my preferred method of getting sunscreen on a wiggly boy, especially his face! I’m always worried about getting sunscreen in his eyes.

drugstore.com is doing 20% off sun and skin care through tomorrow. if you have shoprunner (amex was giving it away for free), it’s free 2-day shipping (unless you have something that is ground shipping only. i love these drugstore deals because there are typically discounts already going on and sometimes freebies.

@Mrs. Pen: wondering what kind of allergic reaction J has to sunscreen? my LO’s eczema flares up so badly with any sunscreen (and i’ve spent about $100 on 20 diff kinds of sunscreens…) and i don’t really know what she is allergic to. maybe it is the zinc oxide. i haven’t tried california baby yet though…
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@SleepyMonkey: similar to eczema? It was a red rash all over his face or wherever the sunscreen was – not quite as bad as hives and no respiratory troubles.
Maybe try that one, since the active ingredient is different. I wasn’t sure what he was allergic to either until I brought it up with the doctor and she said it was likely the zinc oxide.

@Mrs. Pen: hers is on her face too. She had a really small patch of eczema on her cheek and the sunscreen caused it to break out all over her face. I actually am a little sensitive to sunscreen too. If it gets on my lips, they start to swell a little. I guess she gets it from me
I will try Cali baby! Thanks for the response!

Haven’t ventured into the sun with Baby Sea Otter, but I use Neutrogena SPF 100+. I’m extremely pale and don’t tan, so I try to stay out of the sun as much as possible. Praying BSO doesn’t end up with my complexion!

Just wanted to update my response that we both got sunburns within 30 minutes using BabyGanics SPF 50 this year. It was brand new, not expired (purchased at Target.) I’ve heard of the same thing happening to a couple other people.

Just want to mention that I had an allergic reaction to ThinkBaby. After reading the raving reviews on amazon, I looked everywhere to buy this (I’m in Canada). Unfortunately, it made my skin more sensitive to the sun. I did a 3hr (one way) road trip last weekend and my arms are so tanned and still feeling tingly today. Also, I have normal skin on my arms. For the first time in my life I have to put cream on to calm the dryness.
My daughter doesn’t seem to have a problem with it but she hasn’t been in the sun for more than 10min at a time.
If you’re in Canada, Mountain Equipment Co-op carries it in stores and online.
Just a reminder to test your sunscreens first!
Thanks Mrs. Bee for this list.

@Mrs. Bee: all of the spray versions of All Terrain are rated 3 by EWG. The stick and lotion versions have the higher 1 rating. Have the ratings changed since the date of your post? I am looking for a spray sunblock with a 1 rating, but nothing comes up on EWG’s list.
