Before I was a mom, going to the pool or beach really meant laying out in the sun with a good book or trashy magazine, and occasionally going for a literal dip in the pool (no swimming, just in and out!) when it got too hot so I could cool off a bit before laying back down… gosh, that sounds so luxurious right now!
Nowadays, our pool and beach visits are a far cry from that. Now, all of my time is spent watching, chasing and splashing (or getting splashed by) Lil’ CB. And now that Lil’ CB is actually swimming (or something that looks remotely like swimming) on his own sans floaties, it means I’m in and out of the water all the more, keeping an extra close and vigilant eye on my little fish, because right now, he is really more confident than capable. Don’t get me wrong, I love being able to do this with my little guy, but it means that my usual rotation of bikinis had to go. Because it’s relatively easy to hide jiggle when all you’re doing is laying down…but, when you’re literally chasing after a 4 year-old? Not so much.
For the previous 2 summers, I wore these tankini tops from Target. And while they offered the convenience and ease of a 2-piece, I finally had to admit that they were just not flattering. In fact, they seemed to accentuate my mid-section and make it look even bigger than it actually is.
So, I sucked it up and headed into one-piece mom suit land.
And you know what? It’s not so bad. Sure, it’s annoying to get the suits on and off, but I feel so much more comfortable and confident in my one-piece suits.
Here are the two suits I’ve been wearing this pool season:
La Blanca Island Goddess One Piece
I looooooove this suit. Like, so, so much. Once you get it on, it’s actually incredibly comfortable and I love the detachable halter strap. The suit is a little bit retro-looking, which I love. And I find the sweetheart neckline to be very flattering and the ruching is very forgiving. I actually scored a great deal on this at Marshall’s, too! I’m actually thinking about heading back to see if I can find this suit in another color because I love it so much. I sized up one size from my usual dress size and could probably have gotten away with wearing 2 sizes up, too.
Assets by Sara Blakely Push-up One Piece
I found this suit on major clearance at Target last winter and I’m so glad I did. It definitely has a sexier feel to it while still helping you keep everything all tucked in nicely. The one drawback is that is hard to get on. I’ve never worn Spanx before, so I’m not sure if in general they’re super hard to get on, or if because it’s a bathing suit, it’s even more difficult to get on. (I kind of feel like Bridget Jones when trying to get it on!) However, because it’s so tight, once it’s on, it’s really slimming and flattering. I definitely had to size up in this suit!
I might slip back into a bikini when we’re on our beach trip this summer, but for now, I’m happy to be rockin’ these mom suits and will be on the lookout for more!
Do you have a favorite “mom suit”?

Yup, my mom suit is a one shoulder number from JCrew! I actually just checked this morning to see if there are any more colors on sale and I don’t see that style this year, so sad, but I have three of them to get me through.

I have that la blanca in the tankini version! I tried on one pieces, but they aren’t long enough for my torso. It’s such a cute/flattering suit!

I’ve pretty much always worn “mom suits”. I’ve owned exactly 2 bikinis–one was a bikini top that I also had a tankini top to the same swimsuit that I wore much more often, and a bikini I bought for my honeymoon. Growing up, I went to Christian summer camps every summer which required a covered midriff and then I worked at the same camp which had the same policy. I actually like tankinis now–you can do so much more in them! I’m definitely a swimmer–I hate going to the beach and not swimming!–so my style didn’t change much when I became a mom. I actually found a great swimsuit at Wal-Mart of all places. It’s from Suddenly Slim by Catalina: their swimsuits are long and ridiculously flattering for my pp body.

Both my suits look very very similar to both of the ones you posted! I have a J.Crew one that I got on clearance, and a vintage retro looking one from Anthro that covers all – http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/product/clothes-swimwear/23716723.jsp?cm_sp=Grid-_-23716723-_-Regular_4#/

I’ve been thinking about writing a “mom bathing suit post” too! Last summer I really stocked up for the first time and got rid of all but one of my “bikinis.” I feel so much better in the suits I have now. My favorites are actually the tankinis from Old Navy. Much more flattering than the one you mentioned from Target. I definitely tried on the Target ones last summer and they made me feel so “poofy.” ha!

I love the color of the first one and the shape of the second. Niiice

I found a MiracleSuit 4 summers ago at Marshall’s (maybe Ross) for a fraction of the usually $100+ price tag. This year I finally have to replace it unfortunately. For plus size mom’s with a larger chest these have great support and keep everything in place very well. I am hoping the replacement I found online will work and last just as long.

I found two non Assets suits from target. Both one piece. I tried an assets one and yowzers – you aren’t joking about hard to take off and put on.

I tried on a couple adorable one pieces at Old Navy this week, but I am just too tall to wear a one piece off the rack. Had they been long enough they would have been adorable though. I have been wearing a fold over bottom, underwire top La Blanca that I got at TJ Maxx last summer. Great quality!

@Mrs. High Heels: oooh…that suit is gorgeous!!
I have a suit similar to the La Bianca one that I got on clearance at Old Navy. It has some sort of control top (or quality control? :-p) thing going on so it’s nice to wear! I have another one-piece from Old Navy that has less coverage. I still prefer to wear my 2-piece suits although I’m probably delusional in thinking that I look ok!

@Sammyfab: It’s pricey, but I needed to feel good about myself after putting my body through pregnancy and labor twice! It’s such good quality and I plan to make it last for many years to come, so no regrets! They have so many different design options too. I think this suit would flatter most body types.

@Mrs. High Heels: @blackbird: I tried on that la Blanca one- both tankini and one piece- and while they didn’t have my size at the time (both I tried on were one size too small) I was worried about the support up top. You find the strapis enough to keep you from jiggling around? My chest is bigger and… Lower… Than it used to be. I saw tj maxx has more of them so I may go try the next size up but they have the strap attached so you can’t try it on.

@Foodnerd81: oh I don’t have the la Bianca suit. I was referring to the anthro suit sammyfab commented on. @Sammyfab: might be able to answer your question though!

@Foodnerd81: I’m small on top, so I don’t need *that* much support ;), but, I will say that it feels very secure with the strap on!

@bpcmarj: i just bought the fold over bottom from la blanca today on zulily…i hope it works well because i took the plunge and bought a bikini top to wear at the beach…eeeeee!! after writing all this, too!

@Mrs. High Heels: Love the Anthro one!
I have a “mom suit” from the GAP that’s a one piece. I was barely comfortable wearing a bikini pre-kids, and now I feel like I have even more reason to cover up!
I might rock a bikini if I had the body for it but uh…not for awhile.
