I love setting goals and would love to impart that ambition to my son, so when I found out about the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program at my local library, I was excited to have something new to do with Jacobi that also had an end goal! While I definitely want to continue reading well past 1000 books, or kindergarten – this program has become a fun addition to our library routine.
I talked to the librarians for more information, as well as perusing the foundation’s website. Essentially, the mission statement for the foundation is to promote reading to children and also parent-child bonding through literacy. Of course we all know the great benefits of reading – and I would encourage you to check out Mrs. Lion’s post where she so eloquently shared some great resources and studies that show that immense benefits for children who are read to.
Each page that we received from the library logs 20 books, and each time he finishes a page, he brings it to the library and he can mark the completed page with a sticker. At each 100-book mark, he earns a reward. He recently hit the 100-book milestone, and was rewarded with a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten book bag! He loves to put the books he picks out in his own special bag to take home.
It is truly so simple. We go at our own pace, the program is free, and we keep track of the books read on our own – and yes, reading the same book is allowed! It makes it especially fun that there are milestones and rewards along the way.
Every two weeks, J and I make a trip to the library to return all the books he borrowed, and pick out new ones. I help him out too by requesting books I think he will love ahead of time so they are waiting for us. I’ve had a lot of fun looking up toddler reading lists and top books for kids to come up with new titles to read.
You can check to see if this program is located in your area here on their website!

What a great idea! I hadn’t heard about it but I might have to print off those sheets for us when LL is a little older
He wouldn’t get it at all right now. But man does he love to read some books!

I think charlie would love to do this even at 4 1/2! He is starting kindergarten in the fall, but we’ve read more than one book daily since he was an infant. It’d be fun to look back at what he was reading at which age!

We are doing this via the app and I love it!
My LO is too young to understand yet, but I definitely want to reward him at milestones – maybe every 250?

aw, glad he is so into it! when LO is older, i’ll consider doing this if he likes it and it motivates him. i hope that the program makes a difference to families and communities where literacy and reading are real issues–i think many higher socioeconomic families have no problem with the 1000 benchmark with or without the book log and reward system, and this just tracks it and creates a feel-good experience.

@edelweiss: I totally agree! And with the libraries participating in it, it means that families who can’t afford to build their child’s library can still reach the 1000 books by kindergarten without paying a dime.
@Mrs. Bee: I think it would be really fun to continue past kindergarten too! Especially since that is the age where reading together gets really fun – sharing chapter books together and such.

We are using the app to keep track, but love that your library has incentives like the bag.

I have a feeling Im close or over 1000 with Drake at 4 since I read to him at least one book per night since he was in utero. I think I am going to print it out and record though for Juliet since sadly she hasnt gotten as many books read to her being the 2nd. I love reading and love to make readers so hopefully this will help me push to help her catch up to her brother

Love! Ours doesn’t do this but making the list myself would be so easy. And it is such a manageable goal.

@Mrs. Pen: started my own list today, thanks so much!

Does reading “the night before Christmas” every single day count as one or 365 books?

Neat idea! I read to D every night every night from 6 months until 1st grade (then he started doing the reading).
This is a good goal for M.
