I recently discovered how to make chalk, and thought it would be a fun project to try with Drake since he loves drawing on the driveway or patio with chalk.
Making chalk is really easy. All you need is:
- A mold
- Plaster of Paris
- Water
- Popsicle Sticks
- Paint
- Cups

Since I was making these for Drake, I decided to buy this cute mold of animals which I knew he would love.
All you need to do to make the chalk is to put equal parts plaster and water in a cup and mix using a popsicle stick. Then you add a drop or two of paint for color and mix them together. Note that plaster of paris sets and hardens very quickly, so you need to be fast. Once they are combined, pour it into the mold and then let it sit out for about 12-24 hours. I always let mine sit for a whole day, though honestly it probably would be fine sooner.
The chalk was super easy to take out when they were done. Drake loved them and I think we will be making another batch soon. I have been eyeing these zodiac molds as well as these animals holding hearts, as I think they might be great favors to give out for Valentines day next year.

I’ve only seen instructions for this before using paper towel and toilet paper rolls, SO much cuter with the animal molds!

How does it compare to Crayola chalk? Does it break easier? Write just as well?

@Mamaof2: I think its about the same to be honest. Drake is rough on all chalk so its hard to say as he breaks all of them Crayola or these. He uses them happily though and they definitely do draw fine
@dagret: Just basic ones I got for Michaels for like 69 cents. Its Drakes regular painting chalk I just steal a few drops

So cute! We seem to get chalk all the time in birthday party gift bags, so I won’t be doing this anytime soon, but totally a cool idea to engage an older child.
