As Little Deer grows closer and closer towards becoming a big sister, I’ve been thinking more about getting her a big sister present from the new baby. She’ll be just shy of 22 months old when her little sister is born, so she’s still pretty young and oblivious to it all. I posed a question on the boards a week or so ago and got some good ideas. There was already a little backpack that I had been wanting to get for her, so I thought this could be a fun excuse to buy it. Rather than a box or a gift bag to open, I’m going to fill the backpack up with some goodies. My plan is to bring it with us to the hospital, and after she’s met baby sister and had a few snuggles, we’ll give it to her. I think the gift will be a good mix of special items, treats, as well as fun activities to keep her busy at Grandma’s house.
Skip Hop Bee Backpack – Little Deer’s been toting around a little purse for a while now and I thought it could be fun to get her a little backpack. Her purse really only holds a few small toys, but with a backpack we’ll be able to actually bring snacks and books with us on outings rather than just stuffing everything in my diaper bag. I think this will come in handy with trips over to Grandma’s house as well as for preschool when she turns two. And she loves pointing out bumble bees in stories and yelling, “beeeeee!” so I imagine this one will be a hit.
Big Sister Bear – Bears and other stuffed animals are probably at the top of Little Deer’s love list right now. Though she’s already got plenty of them, I think having a special one for the day she becomes a big sister is fun too. I know she’ll love snuggling this little bear (and most likely toting her around everywhere).
My New Baby Book – We’ve been gifted several big sister books from family members, but I love that this book is really geared towards toddlers that are still pretty young when getting a new sibling. It’s sturdy and I know she will enjoy flipping through it and reading it with us before bedtime.
Sticker Books – Stickers not only keep Little Deer busy, but she gets super excited about them. Granted they usually end up all over the place (her current favorite spot is my pregnant tummy!), but that’s OK because she has so much fun. She also is very into animals, so we got a few different animal sticker books to put in her backpack.
Curious George Matching Game – Little Deer loves Curious George and is also very into matching things lately, so I thought this would be a perfect gift. It’s meant for kids a little older, but I think if we take out a few of the cards and let her just play and match them up that she’ll have a great time. She’s very determined and focused with puzzles and games like this, so I’m excited to see how she does with this. I think we’ll get a lot of play-time out of it in the future.
We may also add in a few treats like a fruit pack or some small boxes of raisins. Hopefully it all goes over well and Little Deer is happy to become a big sister. We’ll find out in just a few short weeks!

Did you buy something special for your child when they became a big brother/sister?

Love the idea of filling a backpack with goodies!
We got Chloe an Elsa & Anna dress up clothes. She’d been wanting them!
Family members surprised her (and us!) with big sister gifts. We had given Chloe hers in the morning before we left for the hospital, but everyone else brought her something to the hospital. It worked out really great. She loved tearing through the presents (and she had to open gifts for sis, too, since only big kids can open presents! Babies can’t!) and the presents kept her occupied.
Someone gave her coloring books and crayons & an activity book. She LOVED that!

we didn’t get charlie anything because olive came 5 weeks early, but he adjusted pretty well because he was 22 months old too. i think it’s a great age gap!

this is a great idea! my son will be 21 months when his sibling arrives. i will be getting him a plush baby doll to introduce him some TLC towards baby – once we find out the sex in a few weeks time!

Our daughter was 22 months exactly when little sis arrived!! She got a stroller for her baby doll from her little sister. She LOVES pushing it around the house and loves to take care of HER baby while mommy takes care of the other baby. She “feeds” the baby, burps the baby, and puts it to bed. haha. She also LOVES stickers and baby sister is almost always covered in them because she likes to share. Playdoh was a gift from a friend, and she’s loved that too. Also books!!! Lots and lots of books!

I love the back pack idea. We had a gift ready for my first, but forgot about it for most of the first week.
With my third I was more on the ball. The four year old got a kids camera and the two year old a manga doodle. Both were great for where they were at. They also baked baby a birthday cake with my mother.

We got DD1 the Skip Hop ladybug backpack as a big sis gift and she loves it! Uses it to tote books and toys on outings and now for daycare! We stuffed a few thing in there too and she thoroughly enjoyed opening her gift. She still remembers that her little sis gifted her the backpack!

My girls were also born 22 months apart! The younger one “brought” her big sister a toy Ergo for carrying her baby doll around, just like a Mommy – the pattern even matched my Ergo.. It was a hit.
The backpack of goodies is a great gift idea. I bought DD a back pack around 17 months for a long haul flight, and it’s still one of her favorite things almost a year later. DD really liked the book “I’m a Big Sister” even though it features an older child.

We didn’t get our oldest a big sibling gift… but we did have his little brother “give” him something during our holiday celebration. Mostly because we felt guilty about missing Christmas due to travel! That said… I wish I had come up with something like this… it would have been perfect!

Love the idea of filling up a backpack! I got Bunny a Skip-Hop backpack a few weeks ago and she LOVES it!! I’d love to hear about what other books you’ve received; I’m in the market for one!
I’m hoping to get Bunny a little baby cabbage patch doll when the new baby gets here.
