For the amount of children’s books we have in our house, there is a huge lacking in the Halloween books on our shelves. Drake is in school this year though, and his teacher has been asking all the kids to bring in their favorite Halloween stories to share with the class as they lead into their Halloween party. I realized that I was going to have to get a Halloween book for him since the only one we had in the house was more suited for Juliet’s age than Drake’s classmates. Here is a roundup of Halloween books that are more cute than scary, which is important to me at Drake’s age.

1) The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything – This is highly touted on Amazon as a delightfully fun story.

2) Little Boo – I really like the concept of this one. A little pumpkin seed has to wait to become a pumpkin so he is big enough to scare someone with his boo. I like that it’s a bit different from the typical Halloween story with monsters and ghosts, and it teaches the idea of patience and doing everything in your own time. I think that’s a great lesson for preschool kids who are starting to want to grow up and do more.

3) Shivery Shades of Halloween –  A color book with vivid and delightful illustrations that will draw in pre-schoolers. The book had me at the title!

4)  At the Old Haunted House – A cute counting story with a bit of a sing song way to it (it’s done to the tune of Over the Meadow). It’s another great book for reinforcing numbers and counting as well as rhyming.

5) Alpha Oops H is for Halloween – From the author of the popular AlphaOops book, this is a Halloween edition of her letter book series. It’s H’s day it’s Halloween, but how will the other letters find ways to shine too? This a great book to help reinforce letters for this age and Drake (and most kids) will probably find humor and silliness when the alphabet takes on a different form and goes out of order.

6) The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat – We are just starting to read the Berenstain Bear books in our home. They are always more sweet than scary with their tales, so it’s a safe and familiar choice.

7) The Night Before Halloween – A take on the classic Twas the Night Before Christmas, see how all the monsters and ghouls get ready for their big day.  The familiar rhythm and story line will probably appeal to the kids.

8) The Spooky Wheels on the Bus – I kind of thought this book might be a little young for Drake’s age set, but then I remembered pre-schoolers all love songs that have repetition and movements they can act along with. Since the song is one they will know, they might get a kick out of trying to guess the new movements and noises that go with this special Halloween version.

9) It’s Pumpkin Day Mouse – Drake loves the Give a Mouse a Cookie series as lots of kids his age do.

10) One Spooky Night– A little monster takes a walk into the dark woods but finds out that not everything that seems scary is. The cut outs look really beautiful and I like the lesson that if you look closer, some things that seem scary really aren’t after all.

I really like the illustrations and message of Little Boo, and think Drake would really enjoy the AlphaOops book since they are covering one letter a week in school now. But I also love the illustrations of Shivery Shades of Halloween and think Juliet would enjoy that one as well.
