If we had a baby and didn’t buy anything new to prepare for her arrival, we would be fine. We have everything we really need, but since having Liam, a lot has changed and there are some new things I’d like to get if we have the funds. We likely won’t end up with everything on our wish list, but that’s ok. Wish lists are a fun way to keep track of things we would like to have, but aren’t expecting.
1) Skip Hop Diaper Clutch – I still have my Petunia Pickle Bottom Scout diaper bag that I used with Liam, and I love it because it can be used as a backpack or with a shoulder strap, but I now realize that I can use my everyday leather tote from Madewell with a little diaper clutch like this inside for shorter trips and save the big diaper bag for longer outings.
2) Dual Video Monitor – While we could just get a second camera for our old summer video monitor, it is on its last leg, so it would be nice to get a new one with two cameras. I’m not ready to stop watching Liam while he sleeps, especially when a big boy bed is on the horizon.
3) Moses Basket with Rocking Stand – When Liam was a newborn, we used the bassinet insert of the pack n play next to our bed. He didn’t sleep it in much, but it was nice to have a safe place to put him down or change him if I needed to. I remember wishing we had something smaller and more portable for that stage, though. I love how moses baskets look, but I’ve also been considering a rock n play, especially since we never used a swing or anything like that with Liam.
4) Glass Bottles – With Liam, we used the Platex Drop-ins with the pumping accessories, but I’d really like to start using less plastic, so I’d like to try glass bottles this time around.
5) Double Stroller – Liam will turn 3 one month after the baby is born, so many people think I won’t need a double stroller. However, we walk a lot – to the grocery store, Target, to dinner, to his preschool, and we will walk to the new park in our neighborhood a lot once it’s finished – and he can’t make it to any of these places without being carried. I know I could also wear the baby and push him in the stroller, which I plan to do sometimes, but for things like grocery shopping, having a double side by side is really convenient.
6) Car Seat – If we get that stroller, it will be nice to have an infant car seat that clicks into it, as the one we used with Liam is not compatible. However, then we need a single stroller that the car seat clicks into for when we go somewhere with the baby and without Liam – and that might just be too much. We’ll see how all of this works out when the time comes, I guess.
7) Side Snap Shirts – This was the one item of clothing I wished I had more of when Liam was born. They are easy to put on and get off and when babies are tiny, they are usually swaddled most of the time. In our climate, pants aren’t really necessary when bundled in a swaddle.
8) Crib – Liam will be just shy of 3 when the baby is born and I know the baby won’t use her crib much for the first couple of months, but since Liam has not tried to climb out of his crib yet, I really don’t want to transition him to a big boy bed until I absolutely have to. I’d like to get a second crib for the baby that is simple and inexpensive like this one from Ikea.
9) Ring Sling – I have an ergo and a moby, but I’ve never used a ring sling, though I hear they are great. This one comes highly recommended by my baby wearing mom friends, so I thought I’d give it a try.
10) Ergo Infant Insert – We have an ergo, but I didn’t buy it until Liam was 4 months old and could hold his head up on his own. I’d love an infant insert so I can use the ergo with the new baby right from the start.
11) Bedding Set – For Liam’s nursery, we used plain white sheets and a white crib skirt. I can use the same crib skirt and buy some new sheets, but I really love this well nested set from The Land of Nod. Oh, and I’ve completely changed my mind on the decor for the nursery since I wrote my mood board post, by the way. I expect that to happen at least two more times before she arrives!
12) Pink Swaddle Blankets – We have several Aden and Anais swaddle blankets, but I’d love some more girly ones to add to our collection. They also work great as nursing covers!
13) 2nd White Noise Machine – Liam uses a dohm every night and even when he takes naps at home. I’d like to just get a second one rather than take his away to use for the baby.
14) Dresser/Changing Table – We have a hemnes dresser we bought used for Liam’s room and I loved using it as a changing table. We still use every drawer for his clothes and other items, so I’d like to get a second one for the baby’s room. It is the perfect size to put a changing pad on top and since Liam is potty trained, I can use the same pad we used for his room.
Things we are definitely reusing:
– Cloth diapers and wipes – We have more than enough and we even have some pink ones that Liam proudly wore.
– Glider – We moved the glider out of Liam’s room when he was around 18 months old, so we plan to use it in the new baby’s room.
– Diaper bag – Like I mentioned above, I plan to use the diaper bag for longer outings and my regular purse (which is pretty big) for day to day things.
– Pump – I’d like to get a second pump through my insurance company so I can keep one at home and one at work, but the pump I used with Liam works great.
– Towels and washcloths – Even though Liam’s are blue, I don’t see a need to buy more of these for the new baby.
– Nursing pillow – I loved my Luna Lullaby nursing pillow, so I might just get an extra cover, but I won’t be replacing it.
– Puj tub – We still have the puj tub we used when Liam was little, as well as the inflatable one we used inside the big tub once he could sit up, so we plan to reuse those.
– Toys and books – We have more than enough toys and books, so Liam will have to get used to sharing!
. . . . .
What, if anything, did you buy to prepare for baby number two?

I have two boys so I reused a lot. But I did buy a double stroller, a swing, new bath towels, and new bibs and burp cloths. I also got a rnp this time which I love.

You should consider the sit n stand style double stroller! We bought a joovy off of craigslist, and it has a little bench for when they don’t feel like standing anymore.

Great list! I really want a double jogging stroller, a ring sling, and maybe a new swing as we gave ours away. And will have to get new clothes as this is a boy and it’s a different season.

The sit and stand double is $109.99 at Target w/free shipping and a $30 GC right now — I am going to pull the trigger on this purchase already bc it’s such a good deal and we have some target GCs.

I second @Mrs.Tiger, a sit and stand was great, since it allows for easier movement in stores double wide strollers and narrow aisles (which are everywhere) don’t play nicely together. Our sit and Stand is long but surprisingly nimble and makes it easier in crowds and is surprisingly light weight. We had our bucket in the sit and stand stroller, I cannot remember what brand it is right now but I love that it is crazy easy to fold and unfold.

@Mrs. Tiger: One of my good friends had that one and she didn’t love it, but it is definitely on my radar.

Your list looks so much like mine!

@mrs. tictactoe: Have you considered the b-ready instead of the double b-agile? It can be a single or a double stroller. We have it as a single right now, and we really like it. (We also have the B-safe seat)

@Mrs. J: Yes, that’s what I thought I wanted at first. I think I’m going to do a post about strollers because it’s such a hot topic!

I’ve bought so much stuff for #2! I feel like I’m spending more on him than I did Xander!!
Crib, crib mattress, bedding, swaddle blankets, white noise machine, video camera for monitor, dresser, changing pad, changing pad cover, diaper pail, hamper, clothes. And I still need to buy pacifiers and new nipples for our bottles.

We added a better carrier (the ergo insert is great for the first couple of months) and a day bed (Stokke Bounce’n Sleep) as well as a newborn set for our Tripp Trapp – things that helped me be more hands free since I was also chasing a toddler around, and things that gave me somewhere to put baby a little bit more out of said toddler’s reach. I would totally advise you to skip the crib and double stroller. I think they are things that feel important now but that Liam will very quickly outgrow. We use a stroller alot but our 3,5 year old never sits although he will occasionally stand on the rolling board. Even our two year old sits less and less, preferring to stand on the board instead. Good luck with Baby #2!!

I’m so tempted to try a sakura bloom sling this time around too, they’re just so pretty!

We had an ergo with an insert right from the start, but we found that the insert was awkward and he never really felt secure. I’ve read that from other moms, too. We didn’t start using it regularly until he was bigger, about 3-4 months old.
