As an ex-hair/makeup artist, I became really sad when I started seeing major postpartum hair loss. It started at month 5 and it’s still going at month 10! Unbelievable amounts of hair could be found in my drain, and my ponytails got skinnier and skinnier. As if we moms didn’t have enough to deal with! Here are some things we can do to help boost our troubled hair line.

products for postpartum hair loss

1.) Josie Maran Argan Oil – This organic product can be used for several different purposes and I love it because not only does it smell good, but it’s safe to put on your whole body. It’s not advertised to help hair loss, but argan oil in general can be massaged into the scalp to help with hair loss.

2.) Ovation Cell Therapy Hair Treatment – This product is all over the radio but it really did work for me! I definitely saw a thickness in my hair over the months and I like how there are different lines for color treated hair. The only bad thing about this is that you have to leave the treatment in your hair for 3-5 minutes, so your quick showers will have to be a bit longer. It’s also expensive at almost $100 for the treatment, shampoo and conditioner. The bottles aren’t very large so it would probably last you 6 months, but for a newbie mom, it can maybe last 1 year since we so seldom shower !

3.) Big Sexy Hair Powder Play Volumizing and Texturizing – I love this line in general and sometimes I just need a quick fix for a special occasion. Grab a teasing comb or brush and just spray at the roots, the most important part being at the top back part of your head.

4.) Biotin supplements – This may be something you want to run by your OB if you’re breastfeeding, but taking over the counter biotin can help promote hair growth. Nothing easier than popping a few pills!

5.) Fake it by filling it in with powder.

Even if it’s just your eyeshadow palette, you can use a blush brush to gently fill in the gaps. (May not be a great option for people who sweat easily!) Just don’t be scared when you scratch your head and see color underneath your fingernails!

TIPS for preventing even more hair loss

1.) Try not brushing your hair. I know it sounds weird, but if you’re going to throw it up in a bun or ponytail anyway, why tug at the roots?

2.) When putting hair up, try not making the tightest ponytail or bun ever. And definitely don’t sleep with your hair in a ponytail! Let it loose when you go to sleep.

3.) Get a trim. Sometimes your dry ends can prevent you from getting that healthy head of hair. Give your poor hair roots a break and try taking care of it by getting a trim and putting some argan oil at the ends.

4.) Give yourself a scalp massage. Or better yet… ask your spouse or partner! Stimulating the scalp can do a lot. Ever wonder why your hair looks so awesome after going the salon? You will most likely get a nice scalp/head massage from your stylist and that can help liven up your roots. Give it a try!

5.) Don’t use bobby pins or tight headbands. Use a scarf or hat instead. I know every mom thinks they are the only person with 50,000 flyaway hairs sticking straight up, but it’s actually not that noticeable to other people. Just try avoiding anything that is going to tug or pull at your roots.

6.) Do a loose French braid instead of a ponytail. If you use the right amount of hairspray, you can actually get a pretty secure french braid that won’t fall out. It is a more gentle way to pull every hair out of your face.

7.) Be patient. Your body is going through insane changes and you will eventually grow your hair back. Some women take months and some years to get that full head of hair back. Throw on a beautiful hat and embrace it. Look at your little one and remember that some hair loss is worth it for such an amazing miracle in your life!
