I have become much more interested in gentle face products after I realized how much I snuggle and kiss Baby Pencil. He also loves grabbing my cheeks, chin and absolutely loves fish hooking my mouth. (Ouch but aww.) I realized that since he’s quite literally “up in my face” all the time, I should maybe consider some gentle products.
After the lady from Bloomingdales rolled her eyes when I asked what good baby safe products there were, I realized I would have to just research on my own. When I asked this same question to many different Sephora stores, I always got puzzled looks. There’s not a great market in this area, which was surprising to me. In the end, I simply just had to look at the ingredients.
Some of my favorite current products are:
1) Ahava mud soap – How much more natural can you get than putting mud on your face? Okay, it may not be just 100% pure mud, but the key ingredients are minerals from the Dead Sea that help with all skin types. Simple and safe!
2) NuSkin Soap-Free Boday Cleanser – This soap helps balance your pH levels so that your skin will be left feeling clean but not uncomfortably dry. I use it in the shower for my face and body. The ingredients include aloe vera, jojoba oil and vitamin E, which are great, safe ingredients for your skin.
3) Caudalie Organic Grape Water – I love the Caudalie line (even though it’s expensive and their bottles are teeny tiny) and I’ve switched to this toner recently. In the ingredients you once again find mineral salts which can really help balance your skin before moisturizing. I absolutely believe in toner, especially for cold weather!
4) Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask – I threw this on one day when I had completely forgotten to put on moisturizer, and the next day I woke up with the softest skin ever! My forehead felt like silk! Ingredients include avocado and apricot kernel oil, so it also smells delicious.
5) H2V Youth Cell Activator – This line is from Burke Williams, which is one of the most amazing spas in California. Although the aestheticians have said that this product is 100% safe for breastfeeding or expecting mothers, I may hold back on having direct contact with the baby after putting this on. This is probably the most effective product I’ve been using. The best facial I ever had was from this spa using these products, and their star product was their Youth Cell Activator. My skin felt super plump and healthy! Expensive but oh, so worth it!
Some tips for mamas:
– Don’t be fooled by the lather! Soap does not need to lather extremely well in order to be a good soap. Both of the Ahava and Nuskin soaps are not good lathering soaps, but they do an amazing job cleaning and balancing the skin.
– Always ask customer representatives if a new skin product is safe for breastfeeding or pregnant women. If they hesitate for a second or say “I think so” then assume it’s not safe. (Better to be safe.) Most good companies will know right off the bat that it is safe and will even use that fact for marketing. Or if anything, ask for a sample and research it later.
– Moisturizing is so important. So is sunscreen. I’m sure that most of us know what wrinkles and sun spots look like by now, so please remember to live by these two products!
– If you can, try getting a facial every once in awhile. Nice facials often come with a hand/foot and face massage so it’s like getting a relaxing treatment that has lasting benefits! Especially for moms who are just going through life at a non-stop speed, it helps to have professional care for your skin. Believe me, I used to be obsessed with my skin and now I can barely slap on some moisturizer before I’m out the door! It’s so hard but at least you can schedule it for a future birthday or Mother’s Day treat!

Thanks so much for reviewing these products, I loved reading about them! I just got my first facial in *years* last week, it was awesome. Do you have any shampoos/conditioners to recommend?

i recently started using the origins oil cleanser and really like it–takes off makeup and cleans my face all in one step (my makeup is fairly minimal) and doesn’t dry my skin out. i’m now totally interested in the intensive mask! anything that feels like a little treat these days is awesome…

The Origins mask is amazing (and smells so good!). Have you tried Nitamins? Its my overnight lotion and it is awesome! My wrinkles are way less deep and my skin looks amazing after using it for a month or two now.

Wait, did you ask about baby-safe skin products? They might have thought you were looking for products FOR baby rather than for you that you were sure could be safe for baby. They might have been like, Oh boy your baby doesn’t need under-eye cream and facials! Just a thought.

@Mrs. Bee: I wish their line had better packaging! I’m always squeezing out every last drop and I even cut open the tubes to get every thing out! haha
@lady grey: Yes! I just did my review on post partum hair loss and I love the Ovation line. That and Enjoy are my current favs! http://www.hellobee.com/2015/02/18/what-to-do-about-postpartum-hair-loss/
@autumnleaves: Unfortunately, lots of organic products are expensive also. But I’m always on the hunt for the most cost efficient but also good quality products!
@edelweiss: I actually LOVE a lot of the products of Origins too! But this one is currently my favorite for my neglected, dry skin!
@psw27: Yes, I love Nitamins! Smells divine!

I love your recs but would caution you against buying/recommending/using AHAVA products– They manufacture their products in an illegal Israeli settlement factory in occupied Palestine. As a result of this unethical manufacturing, they are dishonestly using palestinian natural resources without the permission of or any compensation to the palestinians.
I would never want to support a company that operates under such dishonest and unethical circumstances.
