I’m pretty sure some people thought I was far too ambitious when I said that I was definitely going to cloth diaper the twins. But with all of the things I was uncertain about when it came to being the mother of infant twins and a toddler, cloth diapering didn’t even enter my mind – to me, it’s a no brainer. Here’s why.
Cute little cloth diaper butts in Doodle Pants leggings.
1. I already have the supplies. I’m obviously in a more unique position as many of the moms of multiples that I’m acquainted with are first-time moms, which means they probably think a lot harder about whether or not cloth diapering is for them. Since I cloth diapered Miss H for 2 years, I’m already used to the pros and cons of cloth and I have all of the supplies – I had 40 Bum Genius 4.0 diapers, cloth wipes, extra inserts, wet bags, etc. The only things I purchased was an additional diaper bin and some new liners. If it turned out it wasn’t for us, then I wasn’t out any extra money.
2. Cloth diapering (to me) is more financially and environmentally responsible. For about the first two months with the twins, I cringed as the (disposable) diaper bin rapidly filled up. I also cringed each time the cost of a big box of diapers and wipes hit our bank account. However, that was the literal cost of survival at that time! Starting at around 2 1/2 months I was putting the babies in cloth diapers. The fit still wasn’t great and we had leaks. But changing an outfit because of a leaky cloth diaper felt better to me than changing yet another disposable diaper! And early on it might have only been a couple of cloth diapers a day. But it was something. At 4.5 months we still use disposables at nighttime, for naps, and trips out of the house, but we’ve been able to significantly decrease the amount of disposables we go through.
3. We do a ridiculous amount of laundry. Three children and two adults make so much dirty laundry it is comical. So adding in a load of diapers every other day isn’t even noticed.
4. I like the control over what touches their skin. I was excited about cloth diapering Miss H because I loved the thought of being in control of what was touching her skin. Cloth diapers are so soft and the detergent we use to wash them in is very gentle. I care just as much about the twins’ skin as I do Miss H’s, so it only makes sense that I’d want to put them in cloth diapers!
5. Cloth diapers are adorable and help keep their pants up! I think cloth diapers on babies are adorable but they’re also really functional. Miss H has always been tall and thin for her age. When she was a baby I would have to go up a pants size in order to get the correct length. But, of course, they’d usually be too big in the waist. Cloth diapers always solved that problem because the big “cloth diaper butt” would help keep her pants up! As Miss Hop has also been long and lean since birth, I’m anticipating cloth diapers also helping her out in the pants department.
What are the drawbacks, you ask? I’m finding there’s definitely a learning curve for cloth diapering a boy when it comes to leaks. Lots, and lots, and lots of leaks! Things are starting to get better in that department as we’re figuring out the perfect fit for Mr. Hop, but for awhile it was getting frustrating. And when you have two babies to care for and change and you’re constantly change one of the baby’s outfits over and over again, it can be even more frustrating. Also, cleaning double the poopy diapers isn’t terribly appealing.
For us, the positives clearly outweigh the negatives when it comes to sticking with cloth diapers in our house.
Would you cloth diaper twins?

I give u so much props, gf! In hindsight, had I known I’d have three kids, I think I would have liked to have tried try cloth diapering. And knowing the sheer amount of money I spent on diapers lol.
I’m curious, are there pull ups for cloth diapering for potty training?

We started out cloth diapering our twins! Everyone thought we were crazy too. After my maternity leave ended and I went back to work, it became more difficult to keep up on the laundry and their daycare wasn’t great about handling the cloth diapers either. Plus – with two boys we had MAJOR leakage.
I think around 9 months we sold all of them and got nearly all of our money back. So, no harm, no foul and we were able to save some money on the cost of disposables.

I would but I
my cloth diapers and its all we’ve ever known. We actually have more leaks in disposables with our boy. Little miss will be here in May and it is a no brainer. I’m not excited about the additional laundry but like you said it is just part of the package.

I just wish I knew more about it when I had my first. We’re potty training our second and I’m letting him lead the way right now at almost 3 years of age. Just glad to be rid of disposables soon… or at least using less!

I think we would! We cloth diapered our older daughter and our infant son is rocking cloth diapers now. Oddly, we have had fewer leaks with him than we did with her. We use a cloth diaper service for the washing, and our daycare providers have all been on board, which makes our life easier. My daughter potty-trained pretty easily at just over 2 years old and while I don’t expect to be so lucky with our little guy, I think the cloth diapers helped the older one. Love the big cloth diaper butt!

Cloth diapering just didn’t work for us so we gave it up. Major props for doing two kids at once! Those little twin bums are so cute!

I don’t know about twins, but probably! I’m planning on cloth diapering my second. Do you think the increased reason for leaks was due to the elastic relaxing in your dipes? That’s what I’m currently debating…

I found those BF poops that always explode out of disposables are contained in my cloth. And every brand of cloth diapers fit differently, fortunately. So if you are considering cloth, don’t buy your whole stash in one brand before you try it and find out if you like it. Fuzzibunz worked great for my daugher, but didn’t fit my son quite right. Ella Bella bum is what I use on him. Bumgenius didn’t work on either of my kids, but I know many people that love them. And leaks can also you caused by your wash routine. There are many online sites to help you wash your diapers. They aren’t fragile, and a lot of people handle them that way when they don’t need too. I personally bleach my occasionally to freshen them up.

Good for you! With the BG diapers for a boy, do you fold the insert so that the thicker part is in the front instead of the back? I think that’s a key to preventing leaks.

I don’t see why not, CD have gotten us through 2. The thing I like least about them is rinsing out the poop when they get older and start eating solids but otherwise cloth diapering is no big deal to us.

After getting through this terrible stomach bug that is going around and having our home turn into a diarrhea factory for a week, I would say that for me, I would not cloth diaper my twins. We were already drowning in doing so much laundry for diarrhea blowouts that got over EVERYTHING that to add in more laundry loads for the cloth diapers would have made me seriously go bonkers. But respect to you for being able to do it! The financial savings is definitely appealing

I am planning on cloth diapering my twins when they make their appearance in May. I am going to use the pre-folds and a try a variety of different brands of covers to see what works best. I hope I’m not taking on too much. I just registered for covers to get me through 16 lbs, that way if I want to back out it’s no big deal. I do realize that people give diapers at showers so I am expecting to have some disposables, but at least I won’t be the one having to buy them and I’ll have them for trips out of the house, etc.

I have for both kids and would for twins. We went away for a few weeks and bought disposables and holy cow I cringe every time I throw one away!
