There has been a lot of chatter lately about wearing the same thing to work to reduce decision fatigue and whether or not women should embrace this trend. I was particularly intrigued with one woman’s choice of work ‘uniform’ and after reading her story, I began to think seriously about my own WOHM wardrobe. Do I waste precious time in the morning choosing an outfit? After I do decide, do I truly feel like my best, most competent self? The answer to both of these was a big yes, and then a big no!
My professional style has gone through a series of transitions, and each ‘era’ had a purpose. My very first role after college was middle school teacher. I absolutely embraced dressing with minimal fuss as an educator, as I wore an adult version of my students’ uniform most days of the week – khaki pants and a school polo which was either blue or yellow. After I transitioned to a role managing and developing teachers, but stayed in education, I expanded my wardrobe a bit with a new suit or two and some dressier pants. And while working in education in Cambodia, I dressed as my Cambodian counterparts did to assist with cultural integration – long, heavy skirts and a collared shirt, every day (despite the incredibly hot, humid weather!). Now, I work completely out of the classroom in a typical professional environment, but still regularly visits to schools for a variety of reasons.
I considered what I feel my best in from my closet – sort of surprisingly to me, it was my most non-casual items like pencil skirts, trousers with a great fit and cut, and my dressier, non-cotton blouses. Armed with this info, I have decided to go whole hog and am doing a complete professional clothes overhaul with the aim of bulding a closet full of clothes designed to fit my new work style and chosen ‘uniform.’ I am going for a ‘classy yet fun’ feel and so will stick to classic, muted separates with pops of color and pattern in my tops and accessories.
I plan to edit my current wardrobe this weekend to weed out anything that even has the smallest feel of ‘frumpy’ and purchase a few new items to build out my new uniform. Mainly, I plan to buy a couple of great, well fitting suits, a stand alone blazer or two, and a dozen or so long-lasting colorful blouses to pair with the mostly dark (grey, black, navy) suits. I have a suit from The Limited and just grabbed a great one from Banana Republic while it was on sale last week, but I plan to look at a few more places to find the best cut for my body. I am considering some great separates from J. Crew – which is having a phenomenal sale, ending today!
For those visual bees out there, I have pulled together a little board of my new work style to keep me focused:
Navy lightweight wool suit from Banana Republic, including trousers, blazer and skirt / Cap sleeve blouse from J. Crew / Floral scarf from Gap / Leather belt from Gap / Tassel earrings from J. Crew
What do you think about the discussion around wearing the same or similar things to work? What do my other WOHM mamas typically wear?

Yep, you can’t go wrong with suiting separates! I supplement my working wardrobe with dresses, which I top off with a blazer.
Work is not a fashion show, but it’s so important to dress the part and take a look at what those around you are wearing.

You have some great choices there! I really like the idea of a uniform. My workplace is casual, so my “uniform” is skinny jeans and a t-shirt (I have lots of these in many colors), and then I vary what goes over them (sweater vs button down, tall boots vs ballet flats). In the summer, I wear dresses mostly, so no uniform there. I try to keep my wardrobe pretty small and I purge ruthlessly (basically every change of season) so I don’t have too many choices. I used to have tons of clothes that I would never wear for one reason of another but now all my clothes get worn, and when they don’t, I get rid of them.

I love keeping a small wardrobe. I rarely buy anything new but when I do, it is from resale stores and only if it coordinates with that I already have.

I used to have TONS of clothes for work. Well that was pre marriage and pre babies. Sadly, many of that will no longer fit. My body had gone through so many sizes!
Now that I’m buying new pieces I’ve noticed I’m sticking to a few pants and skirts in neutral colors (khaki, navy, black, gray) with colored shirts that will match any of them. I also like cardigans a lot.
I tend to buy a lot at Limited. They always have sales and coupons so you get a great price!

Luckily, the attire at my job can be casual so I usually wear jeans and a solid color top – I like using my shoes and/or scarves as my accessories so it doesn’t get old wearing the same clothes every week. When I had to dress up more for work, I liked WHBM’s offering of the 5 must haves that you can wear multiple ways; I think BR offers something similar.

I streamlined my work wardrobe a couple years ago and I can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner. My uniform is sheath dresses, blazers, and pumps. My favorite sheath is from Lands End, of all places. It doesn’t need dry cleaning and is a ponte that works all year. Since I also do a lot of walking to offsite meetings I usually pack flats for warm weather and boots for cold weather. Jewelry is the same every day and I invested in a huge leather tote for my laptop and files. So easy and I’m never scrambling to put things together.
Now that I primarily WAH I would love to structure my casual wardrobe the same way but I’ve yet to find a consistent uniform I love! So I’m mostly in a sad mishmash of workout clothes and jeans.

I read the article about the woman who wore the same thing to work every day for a year or so and I think doing that is actually a good idea, whereas wearing one thing for a while and then changing it up might make someone look a little like they never washed their clothes! Being pregnant, it would be easier to wear the same maternity clothes every day, but I don’t think it would work too well after the birth with breastfeeding tops etc!

Has anyone found good work pants (trousers or slim ankle-length pants) that are machine washable? I’ve found a lot of good pants online (BR, Ann Taylor) but everything is dry clean only…

I decided, some time ago, to follow a similar philosophy where I took a wardrobe inventory and tried to keep it as “minimalist” as possible. I am loving the approach. (And need to go shopping to get ready for the spring/summer months). Also – I have the BR suit in navy and black: LOVE!

JCB: Jones New York has a line of machine wash suits!

Jcb, I got a pair of skinny pants from Jcrew that are machine washable. One of the bees actually blogged about them! (I’m blanking on who at the moment). I also want to recommend StitchFix for work clothes! I decided I needed a clothes overhaul once I went back to work after my maternity leave but I don’t have time to shop and online shopping is overwhelming to me. I got my first StitchFix shipment this past weekend and I loved it!
ETA: I feel better when I feel I look nice so what I wear/how I look in my clothes is important to me. I’ve struggled with my weight over the years and struggle sometimes to find things in my closet that I feel confident in. I read that article about decision fatigue and how spending time choosing clothes is a waste of time but I think it is important! If I’m wearing something I don’t feel good in it usually affects my mood! Also, I pick out my outfit the night before so I’m not stressing about it in the morning!

JCB, I have a couple of items that say “dry clean only” that I have actually ended up just machine washing. All of my clothes just get washed on the delicate cycle in cold water and then I hang to dry, to minimize wear and tear. So while I might not recommend paying a lot for pants and then washing them in appropriately, maybe you could check the fabric content and do a google search or ask someone knowledgeable if they would be safe to wash gently?
I love this post and the idea of having a minimalist wardrobe. I think I’m pretty close from the minimalist end – but even though I don’t have much, I have a hard time figuring out if things work together and just end up with decision fatigue anyway after trying to push myself to wear outfits I’m not entirely comfortable with. I think all the current discussion about this will push me to purge even more and in a few months when I’m done wearing maternity clothes and I go back to my wardrobe, I’ll make a goal of accumulating just a few quality items that definitely work together.

JCB-Old Navy pixie pants! I love, love love them! None of the other ON pants fit me right except pixies.
I have really pared down my wardrobe the past few years and try and keep some capsules…blacks/greys/whites/khaki colored pants and tops. It makes it so much easier to grab a pair of pants, match with a colored top and scarf or blazer.

@looch: I completely agree! Dress for the job you want, right?!
@catlady: you are so smart. I need to edit seasonally, honestly. Maybe that should be a goal. I’d love to do like a ‘retire 3 pieces, pick up 3 new ones’ kind of thing each season, as I rotate things in/out.
@DillonLion: that’s so smart! I like to think that once I do this, I can know what will match/coordinate and shopping will be easier!
@Mamasig: We are so similar! I also now tend the neutral bottoms and keep it colorful on top. And I find so many great things at The Limited. I just love my suit from there!
@autumnleaves: I love WHBM in theory but I think I have an odd body type for that place! I try things on endlessly but leave emptyhanded
You should let me know if you have favorites you turn to there, like dresses or something!
@MoreCoffee: I was considering going the simple dress route, with good cardigans since I tend toward cardigans now! You’re comment solidifies that I’d love to add some great dresses that coordinate color/fabric-wise with my other separates.
maternity clothes: good point!
JCB: such great suggestions for you! I’m going to check some of these things out, like the Pixie from ON!
@Munchkin: Ah, so good to know! I got it in the mail a week ago and was so nervous that the cut of the pants wouldn’t work but they seem ideal! The jacket is also so nice- slim cut but not overly tight! Woot!
@Apples4Teacher: You’re point about wanting to feel good/look good is exactly what I had to do this! I found my clothes were contributing to my mental health and I wanted to be sure it was positive contributions!
@shellio: yes, exactly! I don’t want to wonder if X will work with Y – I want to know that everything can mix and match well and all I have to do is decide if I want to add some fun with a scarf and shoes!
@matador84: precisely! and thanks for the rec about the pixie pants! i’m going to grab some for spring!
