One of the benefits of IVF is that the two week wait is short. I was scheduled to have a beta drawn nine days after transfer. My doctor advised me to relax as much as I could the first few days after transfer, but that it wasn’t necessary for me to stay in bed. Since the clinic was only a couple hours drive from Mr. P’s mom’s cabin in the mountains, we decided to go visit her.

Mr. P and I didn’t have to rush back to work so we both spent the first few days after transfer relaxing. His mom and aunt pampered us, and we really enjoyed our visit. We had delicious meals, visited with family and friends, put together puzzles, played board games, went on walks, and snuggled up with their puppies. We ventured down the mountain a couple of times to go to lunch and see some live music. Between Mr. P, his mom, and his aunt, I never had to cook a meal. I barely had to fix myself something to drink.

Much too quickly it was time for Mr. P and me to head home. We said goodbye with promises to let his mom and aunt know the results of my beta as soon as we could. The drive back home was long so we split it up into two days. We arrived home 6 days after the transfer. The next morning was a Sunday. I made plans to test when I woke up. I thought at 7 days past transfer, which was the equivalent of 12 days past ovulation, I would have a clear answer on a home test. I didn’t tell Mr. P that I was testing; I wanted it to be a surprise.

I had a hard time falling asleep that night and woke up several times. I made myself stay in bed until it was time for my morning progesterone shot, so that I would have something to do while waiting for the results. Finally it was time to get up. I took the test, set it on the back of the toilet, and walked away without looking. I set the timer on my phone for 10 minutes because I wanted to be sure the test was completely done before I looked at it, and then busied myself with my shot.

After I took my shot I brushed my teeth. Then I looked at the phone timer and had one minute left. I watched the time go down to 0 and hurried back to the toilet and snatched up the test with shaking hands. Immediately I saw two dark lines! Relief flooded through me. I raced back into my bedroom where Mr. P was browsing on his phone. I shoved the test at him and said, “Congratulations, you’re going to be a dad!” We sat there staring at the test for a few minutes while it sunk in.

Mr. P and I were so happy that I had a positive test, but we were also both a little guarded as well because of our previous IVF loss. We both felt like we couldn’t fully celebrate until I had my beta test, which was scheduled for two days later.
