When it comes to buying items for your newborn, it can be pretty overwhelming. The choices are endless so for a first time parent, it can be difficult to figure out what to get. Although a lot of the things you buy your baby depends on your personal preferences (i.e. maybe you want organic cotton for all your baby clothes), I’ve found that with some items, there simply is the better option. When I say better, I mean that they can make things easier or are long lasting. I have the items I consider “good” as well as the items that I think are “better.” However, having gone through the newborn stage with two little ones, I now have a better handle on the items I would much rather choose.
This is good… but this is better!
Most newborns don’t enjoy getting their clothes changed so if you are trying to decide between a snap button sleeper and a zippered sleeper, definitely go with the zippered sleeper. Baby Pizza still wakes for feedings in the middle of the night and it always takes me a bit longer to do diaper changes during those nights I decide to have her wear a snap button sleeper. It also helps to look for sleepers that cover the feet so you don’t have to be worry about their feet getting cold or having to put socks on them.
This is good…but this is better!
I am constantly changing bibs and over time the velcro bibs lose its stickiness (Make sure you stick the velcro together before throwing it in the washing machine). I’ve had a good number of bibs passed down for both my girls to use, so some of them probably need to be tossed, but the bibs with the snaps still work so well. Baby Pizza loves to yank off her bibs but the snap bibs are definitely harder for her to pull off.
This is good…but this is better!
It helps to buy onesies with the expandable lap shoulder because it is a bit easier to put the onesie over the head when it’s extra stretchy. You can also pull the onesie down (instead of over the head) when there is a poop explosion to avoid a crazy mess (hey, it happens!).
This is good…but this is better!
Newborns have uncontrolled arm movements so they can scratch themselves easily. The mittens can come off pretty easily so I try to look for clothes that have the cuffs that can cover the hands.
This is good…but this is better!
When given a choice between a shirt with snaps and a shirt that goes over the head, I prefer the shirt with the snaps. With my second child, I was more comfortable with putting clothes on, but I remember being a bit nervous with my first as I tried to be gentle in putting the shirt over the head and wiggling their arms through the armholes. With the snaps, it was easier to put the arms through and not even deal with putting the shirt over the head.
This is good…but this is better!
I’ve had two babies that spit up a lot during the newborn stage so I needed absorbent burp cloths. Many people use these cloth diapers as burp cloths because they are so absorbent. The other burp cloths often soaked through for me. If you don’t have a baby that spits up all that much, then I’d just go with the cuter ones.
. . . . .
Do you agree with the “better” options? And do you have baby items that you think are without a doubt the better choice?

Yup, agreed as to all except the bibs. No bib is “better” in my opinion–I just took that shirt off and washed the baby after dinner!

Yes, such a great comparison list! So true about everything! Don’t even get me started on pjs with snaps. It’s like pulling teeth to get those on/off.

no long rows of snaps in this household unless it was a gift and/or too cute to resist.

I agree with all of your better items except bibs. I’ve yet to use bibs so I have no experience there.

I actually preferred the sleepers with snaps. I only undid the snaps at the bottom when changing diapers. But DH didn’t find the snaps as easy.

So true! All of these things. I was so thankful for zip sleepers!! All those buttons at 2am were the worst. Also, was anyone else gifted sleepers or outfits for newborns/3mo with buttons?? No thank you. They got worn once for photos and off they came. Ha.

Except for the sleepers. I hated trying to jam the leg that didn’t zip into its spot! Of course if you put the legs in first it’s easy but for diaper changes I didn’t want to undress her all the way. Now at 14 mo I dress her standing up and they’re easy. But maybe there was a trick I didn’t know about? Otherwise zippers are better than snaps but I wanted both legs open!

my brestfriend over the boppy. i registered for (and got) a boppy but when i went to see a lactation consultant about difficulties breastfeeding, the first thing she had me try was a my brestfriend, it has made a world of difference!!

I agree 100% with your list! After having 3 babies in 36 months time is of the essence. Zippers, snaps that hold and absorbent burp cloths are all necessary. Good job!:)

I totally agree with your better options!

Even better … pj’s with two way zips! Like bonds which have fold over feet and hands and two way zippers.

For the bibs, More important to me was if it had a plastic liner on the inside. My baby was drooler and always soaked through the bibs that didnt have them she wore bibs all day every day from about 4 months-9months

@jhd: I thought my husband was the only one! He agrees with you 100%

Marpac Dohm over that battery powered thing and apps I tried to live with before admitting defeat.
The giant ugly already-owned recliner vs trendy cute nursery chair. I still hate the beast but the hours and nights I’ve clocked on old faithful make it worth it.
A good stroller vs. something cheaper. We didn’t go for the most expensive option but we got a really nice one that really met our lifestyle and needs and everyone in our family including grandparents love our stroller. When we’ve had to use cheaper ones or see people struggle with a stroller they aren’t happy we are so glad we got our stroller. It is so worth it.

Definitely agree with them all! I buy off registries but always include a pack of the basic white onesies with the built in cuffs- so awesome in the first few weeks (esp because my daughter was always scratching)

Except that snaps are actually great for the NICU so that wires can thread through… Just to keep in mind!

I am in the midst of prepping for baby #2 and at the top of my list are zippered sleepers. I’m also going to try the Scabib this time (anticipating another big spitter-upper) as there are all those folds and 3 times the surface area but I definitely agree snaps are way better, especially when trying to avoid all of the things getting Velcroed together in the wash.

Agree 100%!!!!

@honeybear: Haha, I like that idea. Even better would be feeding a baby naked.
I go through tons of bibs though because of a spitter upper so bibs are a must for me.@edelweiss: I am semi jealous of people that say they don’t need bibs.
@Chillybear: I feel your pain. I have a bin just filled with bibs! With some bibs, I double layer. Haha. I agree with the plastic liner bibs though…it’s hard to find bibs that are truly absorbent! I recently bought Matimati bibs and they are stylish and really absorbent!
@Becky: I am going to have to try those Scabib bibs….so cute! Definitely try the Matimati bibs too!

@jhd: I@MUI831: I guess it does work better for some! I have this ONE sleeper that goes over the head and there are just like 4 snaps for the diaper part. Those I find easier actually than the zipper! I think it must have to do with the quality of the snaps too! Because those snap in beautifully, but some of the ones I have are so hard to snap and even when I want to snap just the bottom ones, more come off. Baby Pizza is the 4th kid wearing some of these clothes though…

@MenagerieMama: So I think the key to this is having sleepers that are a bit bigger than than a perfect fit. I found it a little tricky to put the leg in today but the sleeper I had her in today was a bit snug.
@Banana330: What is this magical two zipper sleeper you are talking about??
@Emily: Ooh! That makes total sense! Good thing to note for those NICU babies!! And any baby that has to spend time in the hospital.
blogger / apricot / 431 posts
@wrkbrk: Yes! That would be a good one to add! I heard that the Boppy is helpful when the babies are a bit bigger and you still want a bit more support. Not sure if it’s true or necessary because I didn’t get that far along with breastfeeding.
@gingerbebe: I just looked up Marpac Dohm. Sounds so fancy. I just used cheap sound machines but I am always intrigued when people are really in love with a specific item. I totally agree with a good quality stroller! With my first, I got a pretty good quality one but once I had my second, I looked for a cheaper double stroller. Of course that totally doesn’t make sense in hindsight because double strollers are harder to navigate and heavier in general. I am a sweaty mess when I use it.

@Mrs. Pizza: it’s this
http://www.bonds.com.au/zip-wondersuit-bzbva-75t.html
it unzips from the bottom as well as the top! just pull the legs out for a diaper change and you’re done!
blogger / apricot / 431 posts
@Banana330: Nice! Mr. Pizza actually told me this morning that the zippers should be from the bottom too and I told him that it exists!!

The onesies with expandable lap shoulders are better, but the ones with snaps (like your shirts) are best! Nothing to pull over the head!
blogger / pear / 1563 posts
I agree about all of these! Good list!
persimmon / 1322 posts
I actually prefer snap sleepers, I like that I don’t have to undo the whole thing.
persimmon / 1095 posts
I prefer sleepers with snaps on each leg. I think it’s way easier to just unsnap the legs and leave her top covered rather than completely unzipping the sleeper and then struggling with pulling the leg out of the side that doesn’t have a zipper.

Ditto about snaps – I prefer the simplicity of a zipper in general, but for middle of the night changes and trying to wake the baby less, I find snaps better. In my experience being able to just expose the bottom half and not have to get that one leg back in is easier to deal with. To each his own!

@Banana330: those bond sleepers come in awesome patterns/ prints. To ship from Australia to the US probably cost an arm and leg though. I’ll have to make my order worth it. How many sleepers does a baby really need? What size since those are footless?
nectarine / 2317 posts
They actually have cuffs so you can have them footed or footless! I think it was free intl shipping over $100 but double check. We have maybe 5 in each size. The stretchies pants and the socks are awesome too!

Love this post! I think with DD, I much preferred the sleepers with the snaps. She was little and zippers would always leave her cold and end up poking her under her chin/neck. With DS, I’ve been favoring zippers.
Anything with velcro seems evil to me – I definitely double-think about using anything with velcro. And @Chillybear: lol, that’s funny. We hated all the bibs with the plastic backing. They made a lot of noise, DD hated them, and I messed up a couple in the dryer by accident. Bumkins were my favorites.
nectarine / 2243 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: it actually doesn’t. I placed a big order during a blowout sale they were having. Over $100 ships free. And with how poorly the Australian dollar is doing right now it is actually and amaaaaaazing deal. They ship via dhl. I did have to let my credit card know about the purchase prior (it looked suspect to them being overseas). The Wondersuits are amazing with their two way zipper. The hands and feet also have fold over cuffs. So can choose whether or not to cover the feet or go footless.
They are hands down the best. Better than Hanna. The stretchies are great too. The cotton is super soft and doesn’t pill at all with multiple washes and dries

I can absolutely agree with you on everything – especially as a twice-round mom – but I waffle on the sleepers. I agree zippers are great since they’re so easy and they only get easier as the kids get older. But I like the snaps for frequent diaper changes. Both my kiddos were born in winter months here in Tennessee which meant that I wanted to keep their core warm while I changed their diapers. Was it annoying when I mis-snapped some of the buttons and had to start all over? Sure! But they stayed nice and cozy
It’s all about trade-offs.
