I am obsessed with the entire Christmas season – I love everything about it, and I like to celebrate it to the fullest. As a child, I always had some sort of advent calendar counting down to Christmas, and that was a tradition I knew I wanted to continue with Jackson. He wasn’t quite old enough to understand it last year, but we decided to go ahead and introduce it this year and I’m so glad we did!
We bought this advent calendar from Target along with a Lego advent set, and we took the Lego advent apart and put the toy for each day into the boxes of our prettier calendar. Each day this month we have been letting Jackson pull out the little mini Lego set and he has put it together with Mr. Garland. As soon as Mr. Garland tells him it’s time for the advent calendar he starts cheering and running to the kitchen, where they’ve been putting it together each day. It’s so sweet to see how excited he gets, and Mr. Garland is having just as much fun with it as he is!
In the future once, he’s old enough to understand it a little better, I’d like to incorporate more of the story of Christmas into this advent activity (maybe by having Bible verses in each slot?) but for now our little Lego pieces are pretty thrilling to him every morning.
In addition to this, we have a Christmas bucket list that we posted on our fridge. In the past, we’ve done activity advents where we have something to do each day of the month, but with work we end up getting so busy that we often don’t have time to complete the activities and it creates more stress than it is worth. We like this more casual approach, so we can complete several things in one day if we want to.
I know this tradition will only get more fun as Jackson gets older, but it’s already pretty amazing! He’s really enjoying this holiday season so far, and it’s the most fun I’ve ever had at Christmastime!
How do you count down to Christmas?

I like your activity Advent calendar idea. I guess you could also put strips of paper in your pretty gold Advent tree with the bucket list.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Yes! We’ve done something similar to that before (activities in envelopes) but found it was a little too stressful for us to commit to something every single day, so now we just cross things off as we get to them. I’m hoping one of these years our lives will be calm enough that we can try that again, because I loved it!

Your calendar is pretty! I’m looking forward to doing an advent calendar when DD gets older. The comments on your last post introduced me to the Jesse tree. I really like that idea.
