A common question I see in my online embryo adoption support group is how much does it cost. There are a lot of variables when it comes to the cost of embryo adoption. The costs can be low or high depending on if you choose anonymous or open donation, whether you use a clinic, your doctor’s fees, and how much medication you need for a transfer cycle. Our fees can be divided into matching and medical. Here is a breakdown of what Mr. P and I spent.

Matching

Application Fee – $300
Home Study – $1000
Fingerprints and Background Check – $90
Program Fee – $1200
Home Study Review – $300
Open Donation Agreement Fee – $2700

Total $5,590

Medical

Saline Sonogram and Trial Transfer – $300
FET fee – $3250
Monitoring Appointments – $400
Medications – $300

Total $4,250

Mr. P’s employer has an adoption assistance program. After Baby P was born we filled out the required paperwork and submitted our receipts. Within a week we heard that we had been approved to be reimbursed for their maximum allowed amount, which is $2,500.

Grand Total (matching + medical – reimbursement) $7,340

In the grand scheme of fertility treatments and adoption costs, it wasn’t bad. We could have spent less if we had gone with anonymous donation and had insurance coverage for fertility treatments. Different clinics have different fees and not all of them require home studies. Also, we didn’t have to pay the entire amount at once. We got started with the application and home study at the beginning of August, and didn’t pay for the FET until the beginning of January.

In the end it was all worth it! Baby P brings so much joy and love to our lives. We can’t imagine not having her.
