In what seems like the blink of an eye, Baby Oats is six months old. He’s still so little, but it feels like he’s been part of our family forever. Little Oats loves him more than anything, and he completely adores her too! We’ve dealt with a fair bit in Baby Oats’ half a year; reflux, dairy intolerance, hearing loss, and the never-ending colds that come with winter. But he is the happiest, most laid-back, well-behaved baby I’ve ever met, and we fall a little more in love every day. He’s a snuggler, which his sister never was, so I’m soaking it up as much as I can.

Size

Baby Oats was a BIG baby – by four months, he was 20lbs and quickly outgrowing his 9-12 month clothing. However, in the last few weeks, thanks to a virus, a cold, and trying to wean off of his Prevacid, he’s lost some weight (we’re working on getting it back up). He’s now 18lbs, about 28 inches tall, and still in his 9-12 month clothing. Little Oats wasn’t that big until she was over a year old, so he’s a big boy!

Food

Baby Oats is primarily breastfed, but we started solids around four months per recommendation for his reflux. He has taken to purees like you wouldn’t believe. His favourite thing is still nursing, but he LOVES solid food. So far, he has tried avocado, carrots, peas, pears, peaches, applesauce, black beans, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, and banana. We were feeding him approximately 2oz of solids at one meal per day, but since his weight is dropping (2 lbs in 2 months), the pediatrician told us to continue nursing on demand, but also give him three meals a day of solids – as much as he wants! Honestly, he’s been in complete heaven – and he’s learning some motor control, so he can even feed himself Baby MumMums while we’re eating our dinner.

Toys

Currently, anything that can be chewed on is a favourite of Baby Oats. He loves his Sophie the giraffe, and is very attached to his green frog Wubbanub. Funnily enough, he doesn’t actually suck on the pacifier part…he just chews on any part of the Wubbanub he can reach. Other favourites include his activity cube, his O-ball race cars, and his Baby Einstein stacking blocks.

Sleep

I wrote about sleep training when Baby Oats was just over four months, and it has been going beautifully ever since. He has three or four naps per day, depending on what time he wakes up in the morning. His awake time is still only about 1.5-2 hours between naps, so we have to get pretty creative with scheduling our outings. Thankfully, he will have at least one nap in the Tula, so we’re not tied to the house. Since we sleep trained, Baby Oats has also been sleeping through the night, which is a total miracle. Probably 9 out of 10 nights, he will fall asleep at 7:30pm and wake up between 6:00am and 7:00am (though after DST, he slept until 8:30am a few mornings!). I am SO amazed at what a great sleeper he is.

Milestones

Baby Oats now has two teeth, and he’s working pretty hard on cutting his top two teeth as well. He can sit up on his own for a few minutes at a time, though if he gets excited, he falls over. He can roll front to back and back to front, but other than that, isn’t really mobile. Though Little Oats was crawling by 6 months, I’m pretty thankful that Baby Oats can’t move around yet; it makes things a lot easier when I only have one kid to chase after. He smiles, babbles, giggles and shrieks, and is the most laid-back baby I’ve ever met.

Happy half-birthday, Baby Oats! Can’t wait to see what the next 6 months bring!
