Painted fabric bins for toy storage
The best DIYs are usually the simplest. Whether it is a fresh coat of paint or an updated design detail, it can make an overlooked item come back to life. Using masking tape and paint, I painted black stripes on fabric bins and I love the way they turned out. The best part was this project was done during M’s afternoon nap (and he is a 30 min napper!). Now we use the bins to store many of M’s toys. We implemented the system a few months ago and now he knows exactly where to go when he wants to play with his legos or find his blocks. We are still working on teaching him to put things back into the bins!
Here are the simple steps to painting stripes on fabric bins.
Step 1: Measure the height of the bin and decide how many stripes you want. The bins I used were 13″ tall and I wanted 6 stripes (2.17″ per stripe).
Step 2: Use a pencil to lightly mark the stripes and tape it off. Press along the edge of the tape for a tight seal so paint doesn’t seep through.
Step 3: Use a sponge brush and paint. Avoid using heavy brush strokes along the tape seams because paint might seep through. After the paint has dried, remove tape. It’s that easy! NOTE Initially I used black spray paint, but spray paint ran very heavily.
