Flower arranging is a really popular Montessori activity. Besides teaching children about flowers, it’s great for developing fine motor skills when cutting (if picking and trimming the flowers) and pouring. It’s a lovely way to bring some natural beauty into your home and for the child to be involved in preparing the environment. My children love preparing a vase of flowers especially for our guest room when we have friends staying.
We collect flowers and pretty leaves from our garden. I provide a pitcher of water, scissors for trimming the flowers and a towel or sponge for clean up. It’s nice to have a couple of vases available for the child to choose from. I find children love to fill lots of little vases and put them around the house. Thrift stores and handmade markets are great places to find small vases.
The child fills the vase with water and arranges the flowers in them.
It is so beautiful in a child made kind of way!

I like this and would love to have my 3.5 yr old do this. What kind of scissors do you recommend?
