Fostering independence is really important in Montessori. “Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed” is a famous quote by Maria Montessori. I find teaching my child or allowing my child to be independent increases their sense of self, their self confidence and improves their skill level. Most often children are really proud of what they can accomplish.

In the kitchen my children have learnt to prepare their own snack, pour their own water and so much more. This is a really fun baking activity that can be used with a young child. My child pictured here is two years old.

I prepared a large tray with pre-measured ingredients required for baking banana bread.  I also included a child’s mixing bowl, a masher and a small wooden spoon. I placed the tray on a low table and invited my son to do some baking!

The order doesn’t matter, however there is a banana that needs to be mashed and I encouraged him to start with that. Then all he has to do is to pour the ingredients into the bowl and mix.

Most children love to pour and my son stayed focused. I sat on a low stool nearby, so I could easily step in and help if needed.

The mixing part is a little difficult. If you want it mixed really well ask the child if you can stir too and give it a quick mix, otherwise it could be a little lumpy.

I then gave my son a greased baking pan and he poured in the batter.

You could use any recipe that has simple steps. Just pre-measure the ingredients and put them on a tray. Let me know if you give this a try at home.
