It may seem a little early to talk about Halloween, but all signs seem to point out that it’s not! While grocery shopping at Safeway the other day, I saw employees putting out Halloween candy and decorations. I’ve also started to see friends pin Halloween costumes on Pinterest. Plus, Halloween is really the next big holiday, so it’s not like we’re skipping over a holiday (like how they always put out Christmas stuff before Thanksgiving…not cool).

I would also like to add that the PSL has hit the Starbucks menu and I saw some leaves starting to change colors on my walk in the rain. So, yes, it’s starting to look like fall and Halloween will be here before you know it. Oh, and if you plan to DIY your costume, I would assume the earlier the better.

Halloween is one of those holidays you love it as a kid, but then it loses its luster for a bit in young adulthood. I would enjoy handing out candy, but I’ve lived mostly in apartments and never really got trick-or-treaters. But this year is different! I now have a kid of my own and I live in a family-oriented neighborhood. I’m all about Halloween this year!

I think it’s super cute when you can do a family themed Halloween costume. I seriously doubt I could ever get Mr. Macaron to ever do this, but I mentioned it to him last night that I was writing this post and how I planned to say he’d never get onboard. Then he surprised me by saying he may consider it if I found the right costume. Challenge accepted!

Here’s some I’ve come across so far that I think are super adorable. Do you think I can convince Mr. Macaron?

Where the Wild Things Are

I love the idea of using a children’s book to spark a theme for costumes. Where the Wild Things Are is such a classic and is so cute. A former co-worker of mine did these costumes with her family a couple years ago and they were fantastic. She’s so crafty and she’s a designer, so they came out splendidly.

Check out this post on “Tell Love and Party” and this post from Mrs. Wigglebottom for some inspiration. Or, Tried and True did a cute job, too!

Mary Poppins

Who doesn’t love Mary Poppins? Just a spoonful of sugar always helps! I love to sing the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious song to Petit Macaron and he loves it. One way to do this would be to have Mom can go as Mary, Dad as Bert, and your baby as a penguin. Adorable, right?

Here’s a great tutorial on how to do a penguin costume. And here is the source of the Mary Poppins and Penguin photo.

Ratatouille

I saw this costume and fell in love. We were just watching this movie the other day, actually. I thought this was pretty original compared to all the other movie & book costumes I’ve seen out there. This would also be pretty easy to pull off, too. Mom and Dad can go as chefs and your baby as Ratatouille, the mouse himself. I like how the folks in this example pulled little details from the movie like the red shoes and clogs.

The House of Cornwall blog did a fabulous job with the costumes, check it out!

Winnie the Pooh & Friends

Oh, Winnie the Pooh….silly old bear. Such a sweet children’s character with wonderful tales of adventure. I always envisioned myself as Piglet. It would be so delightful for the family to dress up as Pooh and his group of friends.

Tip Junkie did a cute job with the costumes, as did Mom and Crafters. Brit + Co shares a cute Pooh & Friends costumes s well.

Super Mario Bros.

mariobros

I loved to play this game as a kid. I remember spending hours with my best friend trying to beat the game, which we did eventually (booya). You really can’t go wrong with this costume setup. Of course there needs to be a Mario, but then you can play around with the others like Princess Toadstool, Princess Peach, Luigi, and Bowser. As for your baby, you can go with a mushroom or turtle. Then you can all sing the song that’s in the game! Do-do-do!

Take a peek at My Life in Transition or Adventuroo for how they pulled off the Mario Bros costumes.

Where’s Waldo?

When I was young, my friend and I had a Where’s Waldo club and we made our own Waldo books. Then we tried to sell them in front of our house. I remember a teenage neighbor came over and bought one under the condition we stop yelling they were for sale. HA! I hope Petit Macaron does silly things like this when he’s a bit older…I’m sure he will!

Say Yes’ Waldo costumes…I die. How freakin’ cute?! And if I knew how to crochet, then I’d totally make this Waldo hat by Repeat Crafter Me.

Bee, Hive, Beekeeper

This doesn’t have a book, movie, or anything to go with it, but it’s a sweet idea. I love the idea of a little baby dressed up as a little bumblebee. He’s your little honey-sweetie!

I was uber impressed by Pink Pistachio and Zinke Family’s costumes.

Star Wars

Of any of these, I think I could possibly get Mr. Macaron onboard if we went with Star Wars. He was a Star Wars geek as a kid, and still really enjoys it. I know this has been done a bunch, but the folks here did a fantastic job with the costumes. This could be epic!

Say Yes did it again with her family’s costume, and The Wishful Artist did such a beautiful job with her family’s costume.

Peter Pan

Yet another classic movie for costume ideas. I guess I just love classic movies and books. Peter didn’t want to grow up, and that seems just fitting for a kids costume idea. I could have our dog go as Nana – haha!

Oh yes, Say Yes did it yet again with their costumes. A Beautiful Mess has a great tutorial for their beautiful costumes.

Dr. Suess

dr-suess

One costume, two costumes, red costume, blue costume. Somehow fish works better in that one! There are a bunch of different books to chose from. As a kid, Green Eggs and Ham was one of my favorites. So that just strikes me as a very fun costume. And I love the red and white hat idea – ahh, too cute!

Here are few bloggers that did a great job with translating Dr. Suess to costumes: one, two, three, four. And if Made Everyday‘s link gets fixed, then she did a phenomenal job.

Petit Macaron is still way too young to have watched or read any of these books and movies I’ve shared for ideas, but it would still be such fun. Plus we can share pictures later in life and tell him all about it.

Have you started to think about Halloween? Or have you done any super cool costumes in the past? Do tell!
