I remember before I had kids, I would always hear about my friends who had kids that did crazy things and I laughed and wondered if it was normal for kids to be weird, or if their kids were just extra awesome. Some of the stories seemed so random – tales of obsessions with certain toys or activities, insisting on wearing ridiculous outfits in public, etc. – I wondered if I’d ever have those types of stories about my kids.
Well, if you have a toddler, you know how that story ended because they’re all hilariously ridiculous in the most wonderful way possible.
Jackson has a number of adorable quirks and passions that I will never even begin to understand. He hops around a lot with his obsessions, but right now he cannot get enough of superheroes. Any superheroes – he’s not picky. Iron Man. Captain America. Hulk. Spiderman. Batman. Flash. Thor. Wonder Woman. Falcon. He knows them (and loves them) all. We watch The Avengers cartoon on Netflix on the regular, and every night he runs around the house pretending like he’s whatever superhero is on his mind that night.
My favorite hilarious obsession right now is his Batman mask. Mr. Garland grabbed this for him at Target one day on a whim because he loved it so much, and I don’t think it’s left his face since. He wears it during breakfast. He wears it in the bath. He wears it in the car. He wears it to school. He wears it always. I have to force him to leave it in the car when I don’t want him to bring it somewhere, and it usually causes a fight. He’d sleep in it if I let him! He wore it to school the other day, and when I got there to pick him up, his teacher told me that he literally wore it almost all day long – she said he only took it off a couple of times the whole day!
He gets like this randomly with all sorts of objects, but this has been the longest-lasting and most intense so far. He also has a collection of superhero “guys” that he carries around the house with him and a cardboard Captain America shield his grandma made for him. Basically, my entire life revolves around superheroes now.
Another hilarious toddler quirk? We watched Minions recently, and afterwards he became completely infatuated with bananas (if you don’t get the reference, there’s a character in the movie that has a banana obsession). He had refused to eat them his entire life prior to seeing that movie, and now he eats one every single day – he’d eat more than that if I let him. I couldn’t stop giggling that first time at the grocery store when he saw the bananas and insisted I buy some – I almost told him no because he had hated them every time he tried them, but I decided to give it a shot and now he’s a total banana convert.
Moral of the story? If you don’t have kids yet and wonder if you’ll ever have weird/adorable stories about their weird obsessions, you will. It’s just a matter of time. And if you also have a strange toddler who obsesses over random things, you’re not alone – embrace it! Although, I do kind of miss the Sesame Street obsession, and the Frozen one…I enjoyed those way more than superheroes.
What is your child totally infatuated with right now?

Red shoes… he screamed SHOES SHOES!!! during his 18 month checkup yesterday when he had to strip down and take off his beloved shoes. Our doctor let him do his checkup with just his shoes on, and he was a happy camper.

HAHAHA so funny! I love love toddler quirks too and I think it’s so special how each little human has their own “thing.” My 2.5 year old is obsessed with singing every single song he knows but he makes up his own “words,” except his words are absolute jibberish-made-up-words. My sister said he is a LITERAL minion because he walks around the house saying “beep bo bo beep!” and other nonsense. He hasn’t even been exposed to the Minion phenomenon so he just became that naturally… lol!

DS is hitting a superhero phase and is obsessed with Spiderman. This is who he is going to be for Halloween, so I bought a costume this weekend. Just try to get that mask off of him!

A bag of rice. No joke. She picked up this 8 pound bag of rice at the grocery store a couple weeks ago, and she’s still playing with it.

Paw Patrol. Always, forever, Paw Patrol. Lightning McQueen and Thomas the Tank Engine are close seconds.

DS is 3 and is obsessed with dinosaurs lately. He liked them before, but lately, omg. He growls in greeting to everybody instead of saying hello. I’m so embarrassed.
He’s also obsessed with “Life is a Highway” song from Rascal Flatts from the movie “Cars”. He requests it every stinking time we’re in the car. Thank goodness my car respects his wish and pulls up the song upon request every time. He sings a long and demands that I do also.

@Alivoo01: Cute! Jack is obsessed with “Hello” from Adele (and her entire album). He requests it every time we’re in the car and then sings along – loudly.

@Mrs. Garland: DS also loves singing to Adele’s “Send My Love”. I’m a fan of the song, but DH is not. like at all. I think it’s hysterical because DS and I will belt it out in the car. Needless to say, neither of us can carry a tune.
