My kids, ages 4 and 6, have been obsessed with Minecraft for the past year like all of their friends. Obsessed would be an understatement as nothing has ever captured their interest so intensely! While playing Minecraft (and other video games) can have downsides, I think it also has many positives. The worlds my kids build are so impressive, they truly bond over it, and it helps foster many skills including creativity, strategy, reasoning, problem solving, and more. My kids also only play in creative mode offline, which is very different than playing online. Plus Charlie reads Minecraft books for hours, and I think it’s great when kids are passionate about something. As far as the downsides, it is highly addictive and can impact behavior, even moreso than watching tv, so moderation is key. While they could easily play all day long if we let them, we limit Minecraft to weekends and when we’re traveling.
Here are some gift ideas for the Minecraft lover in your life!
1) Collector case – A great gift for the Minecraft collector and lover in your life!
2) Blind Box – I think Shopkins is responsible for the “blind bag” phenomenon that you see on youtube videos where a narrator opens up toys and plays with them. My kids love blind bags!
4) Magnets – Create Minecraft worlds on your refrigerator with these magnets. This is high on my wishlist!
5) Lego – You can’t go wrong with Legos and Minecraft.
6) Plush – At this age (4 and 6) both my kids are really into plush dolls. We currently have the pig and the octopus.
7) Books, 8) Activity book, 9) Encyclopedia – There are 4 official Minecraft books and we own all of them (Construction, Combat, Essentials, Redstone) as well as the activity book and encyclopedia.
10) Kindle Unlimited – We have a membership for $9.99/month and it’s great for Minecraft books written by regular fans! Check out what’s currently in our library (you can borrow 10 books at a time) pictured: Diary of a Minecraft Zombie book

What format do they play it on? I’d be interested in introducing it to my 4 year old daughter but not sure how to start!

My son has watched a few friends playing it, that’s the extent of it for him, but he loves it.
We’ve gotten the paper mobs for him, he loves to build those and this year we’re doing a minecraft christmas tree, lol.

@looch: tell me about the xmas tree! Are you using the papercrafts as ornaments?

@Mamaof2: We are in the process of collecting boxes for it. I am going to do a stacked box tree (we do one every year) but this year one box is going to be a grass block another is going to be a granite block, a bookshelf, a TNT and a table of enchatment with a book. Then I’ll use those paper craft things as ornaments that I will string on fishing wire and drape around the stacked boxes.
The best part is that after Christmas, I just dismantle and put everything into the recycling bin.

My son fell in love with the Diary of a Minecraft Zombie books in Grade 2. He has the whole series and reads them over and over again, so thank goodness they just came out with a Herobrine book. Maybe s new series?
