We’ve recently started making our way around the 2-year-old birthday party circuit. While it has been oh so entertaining to see a bunch of toddlers run around a room together, I’ve also managed to pick up some great gift ideas from various friends and family members. Here are a few items that we have gotten that my two-year-old loves.
1. Shopping cart – You can’t go wrong with this shopping cart. We’ve noticed Max doing a lot more pretend play with his kitchen set, so much so that he has to “go grocery store” every so often so he can pick up more supplies.
2. Construction Plate and Utensils – This is such a fun gift that will make meal time fun for your little one. The utensils are easy to grip and durable.
3. Basketball hoop – This basketball hoop is great because we can set it up inside during the winter and outside once it gets warmer. I love that it keeps Max active as he runs after the basketball. Plus it adjusts to 3 different heights so he will be able to use it for several years.
4. Bath faucet – We gave this toy to Max a few months ago and now he loves taking a bath. It is battery operated and cycles the bath water through the spout. Max always gets upset when we turn the bath faucet off and this toy was the perfect solution. The batteries lasted a surprising 6 weeks considering he leaves it on for roughly 45 minutes 5 times a week. Most days we have a hard time getting him out of the bath. I was a little wary at first because some of the Amazon reviewers said that the toy stopped working after a month, but we’ve had it for about 5 months so far and have not run into any issues.
5. Remote control Thomas – Max loves any and all trains. This remote has two buttons, which make it simple for your little one to maneuver the car. Of course, there are still some days when Max just pushes the buttons non-stop. But for the most part, I love watching him figure out the buttons and the excitement he gets when he does something he is proud of.
6. Train Set – We started with this Ikea train set for $9.99. After seeing how much Max loves playing with it (he could play with his choo choo’s all day!), we have slowly been building onto it. We added this magnetic bell signal that dings when the trains roll past it (the sound is not loud at all) and this garage with a bright red knob to open and close the door. Note: The Ikea bridge has a lower profile so most of the Thomas brand trains do not fit under it. We replaced it with this one.
7. Picnic table – This table is sturdy, easy to fold up and can easily be wiped clean. Initially, I wanted to exchange it for a slightly smaller option, but after seeing how much Max loves to play on it, we’ve decided to keep it. The table itself is not that big — our living room is the limiting factor. The table folds flat so it is easy to take on the go or temporarily store away. I’m excited for the summer when we can take it outside for picnics.
8. Birthday cake set – Max recently got a kitchen set and loves playing chef. This wooden birthday cake set comes with different toppings and candles to decorate your cake. Max has started singing “happy birthday Max” everytime he serves it and ends by blowing out the pretend candles.
9. School Boogie Bus – If your little one is like mine then he loves school buses. This one is fun because the motor rumbles, flashes some lights then takes off. Every time it rumbles Max giggles in excitment then takes off chasing it.
10. Take apart truck with drill – This toy is great and your little one will love putting the truck together with the drill it comes with. Max has been using his drill on some of his other trucks. I love the added detail that the makers put into the drill with 3 each to switch drill bits.
. . . . .
What are some of your favorite toddler gifts?

I am going to have to check out that construction plate set and the truck with the drill- my little guy loves all construction things. His favorite gifts from Christmas are a dump truck, magnatiles, and play food.

@autumnleaves: We love the construction plate. It comes with a fork, spoon and a pusher. Of course the pusher is Max’s favorite utensil, but it makes meal times much longer since it’s a doesn’t contribute to eating.
