Lion loves reading and we have a special love for interactive picture books in this household. Beyond lift-the-flap or touch-and-feel books, we’ve discovered a lot of really great interactive picture books. Many break down the fourth wall and ask for the reader to get involved. Here are some of our favorite interactive picture books:
The Monster At the End of This Book and Another Monster at the End of This Book – Who doesn’t love Grover (and Elmo)? Lion thinks these books are hilarious.
Yoo-Hoo, Ladybug! – A seek-and-find book, Lion also likes to call out “Yoo-Hoo, Ladybug!”
We Are In A Book – A Mo Willems book, part of the Piggie and Elephant series, this one addresses the reader directly.
Mix It Up and Press Here and Let’s Play – These three books are so much fun for a toddler! My favorite is Mix It Up, but Lion loves all of them and actually laughs as we participate in touching the different paint colors, mixing them together, slamming the book shut and more.
Count the Monkeys – This is my all time favorite interactive picture book. We discovered it at the library a few months ago and Lion LOVED it. So cute to see him follow along with the book, zig zagging his hands, putting them above his head, and telling characters to scram. The first time I read it to him, he immediately asked me to read it again. And again. And again. About twelve times.
Tap the Magic Tree – Similar to Mix It Up, this one asks the reader to interact in various ways, like shaking the book.
Can You Make a Scary Face – I’d say the title says it all, except it’s much more than this. It asks the reader to sit, stand and do all sorts of silly things. A great book for preschoolers.
I Spy – I can’t wait until the kids are old enough for Where’s Waldo, but until then, Lion enjoys seek-and-find books like the I Spy series.
Waterhole – I love books by author/illustrator Graeme Base and look forward to getting this one for the kids. The pictures are gorgeous and it’s so much fun to find the hidden images in the busy illustrations.
Don’t Push the Button – Lion is such a rule follower that the first time I read it to him, I could not convince him to push the buttons on the pages!
Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus – Lion loves telling the pigeon, “no.” He loves pretty much all Mo Willems books, but this one is his favorite.

I recently borrowed a handful of interactive books. I have to say, I think one of my favorites is still Mix it up! I just put some of the ones you suggested on hold at the library for us
I always enjoy your book suggestions

Thanks for sharing these recommendations! We have several that are favorites (Mix It Up, Press Here and Don’t Push the Button) but will try to find others at our library.

We LOVE Tap the Magic Tree in our house! He also likes its sister book, Touch the Brightest Star. The Monster at the End of this Book is a classic! My son actually has my version from when I was little.
