Recently, a friend who is pregnant with her first asked me what I thought were splurge-worthy baby items. It made me think about all the baby items I wish I could have, but it’s hard for me to justify buying these higher priced items now since I already have two kids. If I were to do it all over again though, I would have been more mindful of the long-term use of these items and made the investment with these purchases.
Here are some items I wish I bought and think are splurge-worthy baby items:
1) Stroller – I swear, once I have strollers on my mind, I start seeing strollers everywhere. The things I considered important factors for me were: 1) not too heavy, 2) easy to fold, 3) easy to turn, 4) large sun canopy, and 5) large basket. For a single stroller, the Baby Jogger City Mini Stroller fit my requirements and was a reasonable price so it was a pretty good investment. When I started thinking about double strollers, I thought I would try to save money the second time around and buy a lower end double stroller. After a month of using it, I ended up reselling it because it was heavy and I easily got tired of pushing it around. Even folding it just right to make it fit into my car was a chore. I ended up getting a better stroller handed down to me from a friend, which is noticeably easier to push and fold away. However, it doesn’t turn easily which doesn’t make it the ideal stroller. If I could choose one stroller for my first baby, I would have probably chosen the UPPAbaby 2015 Vista Stroller . I kinda drool over looking at it. It’s a great, reliable brand and this stroller can grow with your family and hold up to three children (using a ride-along board for the oldest). Strollers can be big investments, so whatever you decide for your family, I would test them out at a store. Making a list of factors that are important to you will make choosing the ideal stroller a little less overwhelming.
2) Highchair – Who doesn’t love children’s furniture that is functional and aesthetically pleasing? The Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair is a great chair that grows with your child. I don’t own this chair but have seen it used at my friend’s house. There are additional items you can purchase such as a tray, which is useful for the earlier stages of feeding and a baby chair set that gives additional support when they are younger. Lil’ Pizza went from a high chair to a booster to now a junior chair at the table. It would have definitely been a better investment to buy this high chair instead of purchasing the three different chairs.
3) Rocker – Okay, so I don’t think I would be able to justify buying this specific dream chair from Pottery Barn Kids because of the steep price, but a good rocker/glider is so important. I was on my glider a lot my first year with Baby Pizza, including being asleep half the time on it I woke up often with a stiff neck but I could picture myself resting my head on the side of this wingback chair. The awesome thing about this chair is that you could convert it to a regular chair by purchasing feet when you no longer need it as a rocker.
4) Travel Crib – I think travel cribs are much more beneficial than a pack and play because they are more portable. We take our travel crib when we are vacationing or visiting family or friends out of town. Lil’ Pizza used it until she was close to three. I have the Baby Bjorn travel crib which works great but I have to admit that I am intrigued by the additional side zipper on the Lotus Travel Crib which I think would have its benefits.
5) Carrier – I was and am still so dependent on my carrier. I had the original Ergobaby carrier with Lil’ Pizza, which I love because it’s a soft-structured carrier making it very easy to stuff in my bag. With Baby Pizza, I started off with the Solly Wrap which I liked, but wanted to eventually switch over to a carrier (which wasn’t even an option in those early months back when Lil’ Pizza was born). I tried the infant insert with my Ergobaby carrier but didn’t like the feel of it and eventually got the LILLEbaby Complete because I didn’t need additional parts to be able to carry Baby Pizza when she was about 6 weeks old. I love both my carriers for different reasons, but for someone who is having her first baby I would recommend trying the LILLEbaby Complete. I heard Buy Buy Baby lets you try the carriers on at the store, so I would take advantage of that.
. . . . .
These are the five items I think are definitely worth splurging on. Would you also agree with these items? What were items you purchased that you felt were worth the big investment?

We have that exact chair from PB because I had the same thought as you, but after many nights sleeping in it, I can tell you it’s just not that comfortable. We would have loved to get a different, more comfortable chair with our second, but it wasn’t in the cards. Also, the chair isn’t really wide enough to sit in it and read to a toddler while nursing an infant.
But, yes to the comfy chair idea! This one is just not that great.

Heck yes to the Vista! I made the mistake of buying a very clunky, heavy and generally awkward stroller (the Peg Perego Book Plus – avoid) the first time around. With #2 on the way we made the investment in the Vista and I already know it’s going to be a game changer. I definitely agree with the comfy rocker/glider and the carrier, but I must say, I think some of those fancier travel cribs are so overpriced for what they are. I can set up/take down my plain ol’ Pack n Play in about 10 seconds and it’s so compact and easy to travel with. No regrets there

Definitely my ergo. I used it for both kids, I still use it on occasion with Little Bug. Love that thing. It made my life significantly easier.
I also splurged on some really nice nursing bras. I used them for both babies, and I am so glad I spent a little more and got better quality because they lasted so long.

This is a great list! I completely agree on everything although we haven’t had a use for a travel crib so I’d personally swap that one for a car seat I love and is easy to use- some car seats are just a pain and I don’t want to mess with twisted straps multiple times a day!

We splurged on a few things that I would do all over again. 1. Our stroller- Armadillo Flip XT. We use it a loss less than I imagined we would because we are just home bodies, but I absolutely love the reverse seat. The new model even has a bumper bar. 2. Our swivel glider- LON Milo. We have the matching ottoman and being able to turn (swivel) completely away from the ottoman to get out of the is so helpful. The glider is all kinds of comfortable. 3. Keekaroo changing pad. It’s really not that much of a splurge if you total up the cost of a changing pad and 2-3 covers. But we bought two to keep on separate floors of our house. LO for the most part respects the Keekaroo and keeps still while in it.

We didn’t need/ want a PNP or travel crib and returned our carrier once we realized LO was not the baby carrier type. As much as I love our Oxo Sprout high chair I think the Tripp Trapp may be the better buy. One day I was pushing LO up to the kitchen table without the tray and the plastic seat piece that attaches to the tray prevented me from moving him any closer. With the Tripp Trapp if you want the table can be the tray.

We custom ordered a La-Z-Boy swivel recliner/glider, which was definitely a great investment since I spent the first 3 weeks sleeping in it with the baby on my chest.

Splurged on the Tripp Trapp for 2 kids and so worth it. My son finally decided he was ready to use a grown up chair, and we were able to sell it used because they’re so well made and still looked great. Also, second the Keekaroo peanut. Saved us so many times when they start to “go” mid-diaper change and for blowouts.

I agree with everything except the high chair. I have a $30 fisher price booster that LO used from 6 months to 3.5 and it was perfect.

I just got the Lotus travel crib. So far I love the side zipper because it makes it easy for baby boy and big sis to play inside like a play tent.

Our pottery barn glider was totally worth it. It got thousands of hours of rocking, nursing, storytime over the years.
I liked that the tripp trapp looked like a piece of furniture. You can buy one used and sell it when you’re done because they have such high resale value.

We were gifted or purchased several of these items and I would absolutely spend the money on all of them again…and I’ve also recommended these to friends who are having babies for the first time. We have an UPPABaby Vista stroller (and purchased second seat and accessories used); nice glider; Phil and Ted’s travel crib (purchased used); and, a carrier (several). The one item we didn’t get was a nice high chair (we have a $30 Fisher Price seat) but I would totally get the Tripp Trapp if I had to do it over again. Function was fine for ours, but the high chair is used – and in your dining room – all.the.time, it’s nice to have something that looks a little nicer. Also, my husband always comments on how great the Phil & Ted’s traveler crib is when we take it as a carry-on on airplanes, or on road trips. It’s 11 lbs and barely takes up any space, in fact can be put into a larger suitcase.

These were all our splurge items! I was debating between the Bjorn and the Lotus crib, and we got the Lotus, with the bassinet add on, which has been AMAZING. It makes traveling with our little one so easy. We have a City Mini, and while I love it, our winter has been so bad, I’ve only used it a handful of times.
I have so many carriers and wraps, it’s almost embarrassing. The Tripp Trapp was my dream high chair, but we couldn’t afford it…until I found one on Craigslist! Win! I also found a used Monte Luca glider, and while it’s not a super plush, oversized chair, it’s perfect for nursing and (bonus), it fit up the stairs in my tiny old house.

@shabang: What a bummer! Maybe if it reclined?
I would surround my glider with pillows to make it a bit more comfortable.

@StellaJane: I’m so glad you are starting off with a great stroller when your #2 comes. I was annoyed every time I used my the double stroller that I first purchased for long periods of time. Seriously, so worth it to have a good stroller, if you use one often!

@Mrs. Cereal: I remember reading one of your early posts about your frequent use of carriers. Definitely a big lover of carriers too!

@Cole: I definitely agree, a good car seat would be worth a good investment. I just haven’t had much experience with car seats other than my own, so it’s hard to know if there is a big difference. For infant seats, I looked for one that was lighter and could fit the baby for awhile (I usually try to keep the babies in there as long as possible before I switch over to a convertible seat). Is there an infant seat that you absolutely loved and would recommend?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Ooh I was just ooh-ing and aah-ing over the chair. Looks very comfortable! It’s the little extra things that totally make it worth it.

@maria: a glider and a recliner definitely sounds ideal especially during the newborn stage.

@elise626: Hmm…I kinda really want one! I look at online garage sales and Craigslist often to check if anyone is selling their used chairs. They definitely look like the type of furniture that would have good resell value.

@emily: Haha, I was like you with the many carriers, I ended up selling 3 of my carriers (one carrier, one sling, one wrap) and I still have 2 carriers and 1 wrap! Haha, now that sounds embarrassing to type out
I just looked up the glider you had and it looks like a nice chair. I hope I get lucky on Craigslist too!

@Mrs. Bee: Beautiful, functional, comfortable…and essential! Hopefully I can score big with a used tripp trapp so I won’t feel so guilty.

Sooo wish we had a better glider, and the Lotus or Baby Bjorn travel crib. We got a standard pack and play thinking we’d need the accessories for the small space we were originally in and then we moved…ugh!

We had the 2013 Vista with our first. When I got pregnant with #2 I felt like I couldn’t justify the splurge to get the 2015 but wasn’t happy with the 2013 only letting the front seat rear face, so we bought the BabyJogger City Select. It never even made it out of the house, it felt like such a letdown after the Uppababy that when we saw a 25% off sale we made the sold the BabyJogger and made the investment, and I’m so glad I did – I love that stroller.
Even pre-pregnancy I drooled over the Pottery Barn rocker but once I finally got pregnant I tested it out and found it not comfortable at all! Plus I didn’t like how it rocked, it had these stoppers on it that made it not at all smooth. We ended up with the Best Tryp and loved it so much that we bought a second one for our second baby’s room.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Have you tried adjusting the height setting? Just pull out the tabs on the side of the chair, slide forward, and reslide into a lower setting. Mine have been sitting at the table in their Sprout chairs since around 15 months.

@rattles: no, but I will now! We have tightened the screws since we move it around the house all the time, but besides that haven’t fiddled with making it “grow” with baby. Thank you for the suggestion.

A splurge that worked really well for us was the Halo Bassinest. It wasn’t technically our splurge — my work gave it to me at my office baby shower. I don’t know if I would have bought it myself without experiencing it, but now that I’ve used it I think it’s totally worth it. My son slept in it until just about six months old.

@erinbaderin: @erinbaderin: you are making me want the 2015 Vista!
Also, that chair sounds like the type of chair I would love (a fully reclining chair?!)…and fall asleep on every night!!!

@MrsSCB: those are the best kinds of gifts! …items you don’t really know much about or wouldn’t think to buy but are now part of your essential items!
