Knowing that this baby is probably our last, I wanted to do something a little fun to find out our gender. I was really impressed at all the adorable gender revealing parties I’ve seen on Instagram and Facebook — opening a box of balloons, opening a cupcake or cake, and I’ve even seen someone hitting a baseball full of pink or blue dust! Although these are all very creative, I knew that I wouldn’t be as patient. I would want to know within the hour if I was having a boy or girl. I also really wanted to include Baby Pencil and had an idea. Baby Pencil is super into spelling letters and numbers these days so I thought I would ask the ultrasound technician to put the gender in a card and have Baby Pencil spell it out for us. Sure, it would be over as soon as he spelled “G” or “B” but I thought it would still be fun! This was his reaction:

Us: (opening the card for him without looking at it) “Read the letters on the card… What does it say?”

Baby Pencil: (looks at the card, back to us. Confused) “G-i-r-i-i!”

Us: “AHHH!”

It was a pretty funny reaction, especially because Baby Pencil was thrown off by the lower case “L,” exclamation points (which he spelled out as “i”s) and also a baby smiley face drawing. Maybe I should have asked the technician to write it all in caps and no drawings. Although – who cares! We’re having a “girii!” I was ecstatic to find out we were having a girl! I had a feeling this entire time that it was a girl because my pregnancy was so different but of course, nothing beats hearing it officially.

I’m so glad to have made this sweet memory with Big Brother Pencil and his new sister. Funnily enough, we happened to do this gender reveal on National Sibling Day! (Not planned.)

So that’s it! We’re having a girl this summer! (And most importantly, I only needed to wait about 30 minutes to find out in a funny and memorable way.)
