Pom poms and pom pom flowers are so cute and fun, but they’re a little tricky for kids to make on their own. This wrapped style pom pom is easy enough for young children to create, and they offer good counting and motion practice.
They’re fun to make and play with, but they’re also a great decoration or gift for a teacher or grandma!
You may need to help your child with a few steps, so look through the instructions ahead of time to see which parts you need to prepare in advance.
You will need:
Green Felt
Colorful Yarn
Green Pipe Cleaners
Scissors
1/8″ Hole Punch (or a large needle)
Marker (or similarly sized cylinder shape)
Cut out a few leaf shapes from the green felt. They can be simple and different sizes. These leaves are about 1-1/2″ long.
At one end of each leaf, make a hole with a 1/8″ hole punch. Be careful not to make the hole too close to the edge or the felt will tear when you add it to the flower stem. If you don’t have a tiny hole punch, you can make the hole with a large needle.
Set the leaves aside.
Begin wrapping yarn around the marker. Hold the end in place as you start wrapping, but after a few wraps, it should hold.
For very young children, it may help if you hold the marker while they practice the motion of wrapping the yarn.
When the yarn wrapping reaches a nice amount of plumpness, cut the yarn. Wrapping about 75 times produces an average-sized flower. It’s not necessary to count, but it is great counting practice!
Hold a pipe cleaner at the end of the marker and slip the wrapped yarn onto the pipe cleaner.
Hold the wrapped yarn together like a little ball and slide it to the middle of the pipe cleaner. Fold the pipe cleaner in half and pinch it together at the base of the flower.
If you want to make taller flowers, keep the yarn flower closer to one end.
Twist the two stems together part way.
Slide a leaf onto one of the pipe cleaner sides and finish twisting the two sides together.
After you make the first flower, they get even easier!
The flowers vary depending on how many times you wrap the yarn, as well as how loose or tidy the wrapping is. You can also squeeze the yarn flower together or loosen up the pom pom to make them open a bit. Each flower is unique!
These flowers look adorable in a little jar or vase. You can let your child practice arranging the flowers to make a pretty display!
And if you don’t want to keep them for pretend play, scoop up your bouquet of pom pom flowers and give them to someone special!
Happy Crafting!
