Although Toddler Pencil is at a full-time private school/daycare, I decided to opt out of the summer program. His school is very academic based, and I figure this is the last time he will be able to just hang out and do nothing as a kid. Next fall, he will be starting pre-K!
My husband thinks I’m a little nuts for wanting to stay at home with both of the kids, but I’m a little excited! Baby Pencil is 9 months old and easy to travel with. I’m planning on wearing her while I take Toddler Pencil around with me. I signed up for the following summer activities:
- Swimming classes once a week
- My Gym classes once a week
- Performance Art camp (1 week)
- Art classes once a week
- Vacation Bible School (1 week) at a local church
- LA Zoo membership
These activities were all carefully picked based on his interests. I would have loved him to be in sports, but he said he only wanted to do swimming, art, and My Gym. I chose a performance art camp for him because I’m curious to see how he would do. He absolutely loves performing, music, and talking in front of people and is very social. However, I don’t know if he’s only like that around the comfort of his family and friends.
Along with these activities, I am also planning to take him to the following places in the LA area:
- Alondra Splash Pad
- Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach
- Long Beach Aquarium
- STAR Eco Station
- Stoneview Nature Center
- LACMA & Tar Pits
- Marina del Rey water bus
- Annenberg Beach House & splash pad
- Santa Monica Airport Park & Museum of Flying
- Del Rey Lagoon Playground in Playa Del Rey
- California Science Center
- Annenberg Petspace
- Flight Path Museum
- The Proud Bird
- Zimmer Children’s Museum
- Bubble Playground
- Adventure City
- Noah’s Art at Skirball Cultural Center
Am I crazy that I’m excited to explore these areas? Talk to me in a few weeks and let’s see how I’m holding up!
What other activities are you all excited for this summer?

Sounds like a fun summer for toddler pencil!
I WOH so my 3.5 year old is staying at her school’s summer session, and my 1.5 is at daycare as well as usual. I actually don’t have a ton planned for summer; I find that with kids, fall is actually our busiest season activity wise, with all the fall festivals going on and perfect weather!
When it’s super hot we really just want to hang out in the pool as much as possible since that’s all the pool time we get, for 2 months of real summer! We plan to go to the beach, and go berry picking. All stuff you can only do in the summer!

We go to Huntington Gardens, Kidspace, NHM and the Long Beach Aquarium all the time!

Enjoy! Do whatever the day brings and puts smiles on your face! If you only get a few things checked off, who cares. If you get them all checked off, who cares. Enjoy!

@snowjewelz: berry picking + beach…. also very good ideas I totally forgot about!
@Megatherium: Oh YES! Kidpsace is so amazing. I took Toddler Pencil when he was a little too young, so I think he would really enjoy it now!
@DesertDreams88: TY! It was hard coming up with a list! But now I think I have too much, haha
@Tiffany: That’s actually a great mentality. No pressure, right?
