One of my Swedish friends always plays this traditional Swedish game called Fiskdamm, or Fish Pond at her children’s birthday parties. It’s always a huge hit with the kids and since birthday season is upon us, I thought I would share in case you’re looking for some unique party game ideas!

You simply hang a tablecloth or sheet between a doorway, or if you’re crafty you can create something custom with fish decor. Each child gets a turn with the fishing pole and a chance to catch a “fish” behind the curtain. An adult sits behind the sheet and attaches gifts to the hook (or clothespin), such as a favor bag, candy, small toy, etc. The catch is that they usually attach something funny first like a smelly sock, underwear, jalapeno, etc. before finally getting the prize. The kids just crack up at each funny thing that’s reeled in!

My friend’s parties are always a mix of her kids’ expat friends and local kids. Some of the local kids are so poor they only have one outfit that they wear every day, so you can imagine how much they look forward to a birthday party like this, that is the norm for kids every year in the Western world. This one time the kids were lined up according to age for the fishing game, and a tomato was attached to the hook as the gag gift. The little boy, having no idea what a favor was, happily started eating the tomato as he thought that was his gift. We gave him all the tomatoes he wanted to eat (and he got his bag of treats too of course)!

Kids of every age enjoy this game, even the older ones. It’s a lot of fun and relatively easy to set up too!
