It’s been a while since anyone has done a tv show post, so I thought I’d recommend a few shows that I’ve found and really love.

workin moms

Workin’ Moms – This is one of the funniest and most realistic takes on motherhood that I have ever seen on television. The women featured are relatable, funny, and interesting. Each scenario that they encounter is done in a way that is believable and makes you really feel for them as characters. I binged the first season in about a week, and I am super excited because the second season comes out this week!

Fleabag – Fleabag is a very weird, very cool, and very engaging series from the BBC. It is available through Amazon Prime, and it is worth every second of your time. The characters are all extremely flawed and you find yourself both hating them and loving them. There are subtle jokes that are seriously funny, and interactions with the fourth wall that suck you in and make you feel like you are privy to secrets that no one else is. It is so well done and so good. I spent a few weeks each night watching with Mr. Cereal (who actually introduced it to me) and it was a show that stayed on my mind for a long time afterwards.

Mindhunter – I am a crime junkie. I love true crime, crime documentaries, murder podcasts, anything that has to do with serial killers, and any basic murder-y show. Mindhunter was a show that we sort of stumbled upon and from the very first episode, we were hooked. It follows an FBI profiler, in fact one of the very first and one who worked to establish the profiling program within the FBI, as he tries to understand why serial killers operate the way they do. The ultimate goal is to create a program that helps to predict the next move of a serial killer based on how past killers have acted. The actual series is dark and pretty scary, but also is hard to stop watching. The main character is pretty lovable in most ways, and his obsession with the people he is studying gets super intense and alarming. Overall, totally worth watching an episode each night. I recommend having a lighthearted show to watch afterwards to cleanse your brain before sleeping.

Best Baker in America – I am a huge cooking show fan, and especially so of baking shows. The Food Network has quite a few awesome baking shows, but this one is definitely my favorite. Ten professional bakers compete through a series of increasingly difficult tasks and the results are either disasters or the most beautiful things you have ever seen. Watching from a home baker perspective, I have learned so much just by seeing how these professionals operate. I also love this because I can watch with the kids, which is always an awesome option.

Sorry for Your Loss – Another sad show, but it is extremely well done. This follows a young widow in the weeks and months after her husband’s death. The main character is super realistic and you waver between wanting to run away from her and wanting to hold her and hug her. The entire premise of how her husband died is also explored and adds an interesting element to the show.

Shrill – I love everything about this show. It is well written, Aidy Bryant plays the main character and she is incredible! It moves pretty quickly and I used it as a filler show when I needed a break from one of the more serious shows I watch. It is just such an awesome representation of someone trying to be comfortable with themselves and taking steps to make that happen.

Pen15 – This show is the reason I am keeping Hulu. Honestly, it is so cringe-worthy and so awesome. Two best friends navigate seventh grade together, but the main characters are played by two 30-year-old actresses. I was skeptical at first and for the first episode, I had a hard time with that, but fairly soon after that I didn’t even notice it anymore. I was in 7th grade right around the same time as the girls in this show, and it is the epitome of how my life was during that time. Definitely worth a try, and definitely not a show to watch with your kids.

Divorce – This is an interesting take on the details of divorce and the aftermath. I really like the pace of this show, it never seems too slow, which keeps me engaged. The characters are sometimes likable, sometimes not, so they seem real and the interactions between all of them is really remarkable. It probably isn’t my favorite show ever, but I do like it and it works for one of those mindless shows to watch when you want to be entertained and not have to think too much.

The Detour – Warning: This show is not for everyone and is in no way suitable for kids. But man is it funny! This is one of the strangest, funniest, most bizarre shows I have ever watched. It follows a family of four through unbelievable shenanigans over three seasons. Each episode has events that are absolutely the most extreme possibility of what could happen and the result is a weirdly hilarious show that is both entertaining and confusing. Mr. Cereal loves this show beyond measure and I find myself laughing harder than I have in a long time while watching.
