I’ve been looking at the forecast for Halloween and it’s not looking good. Around here, it will be a high of 39 and a low of 24, with both rain and snow expected that day. Thankfully, we were able to wear our costumes this weekend for an event because I’m not sure how our afternoon is going to look on Halloween.
I think my kids will be content with just going to the few houses that neighbor our home due to the chilly weather. Maybe this works to my advantage because I’m 36 weeks pregnant and wouldn’t have enjoyed walking around for too long. I’m hoping most of our day in the afternoon and evening could simply be spent together in our warm home.
Here are a few last minute alternative ideas to trick or treating that can all be done indoors:
- Go trick or treating at an indoor mall. This is a nice option if you still want to dress up and go trick or treating.
- Watch a Halloween themed movie, whether in theaters or at home.
- Make Halloween themed treats together or cook a Halloween-themed dinner. I may want to make some mummies in a blanket or personalized Halloween-themed pizzas.
- Play Halloween themed music…and dance! Our kids love when we turn on disco lights and have a dance party.
- Carve a pumpkin. We have all the things at home to carve pumpkins but haven’t gotten to it yet, so we might need to do it on Halloween!
- Make Halloween themed crafts. My kids would be so happy if we made Halloween slime.
- Make it a game night, whether you play Halloween themed games or just pull out the games you already have around the house. I may let my kids play with toilet paper and dress up as mummies.
- Build a fort with blankets and chairs and read Halloween-themed books with a flashlight.
Have you ever skipped out on trick-or-treating? What are some of your alternative ideas for a fun evening on Halloween?

I love your costumes!! So creative and fun!
We usually trunk or treat or do other events the weekend before – nice to use the costumes again and it’s a hedge against bad weather. We’ve have three rainy Halloweens in a row but so far gotten lucky and made it out at the last minute. This year is going to be cold so not sure how long the big kids will last and the 1yo will probably just go in the carrier and only wear her costume for a picture at home.
Now I want to make those mummies tonight!

Luckily we went trick or treating at my work last week because I woke up to snow on the ground!!!! My boys will still want to ToT tomorrow so I’ll have to dig up some boots and dress them warm. Hopefully they won’t want to stay out too long!

If it’s pouring, we’ll stay in, and I’ve promised them a movie, popcorn, hot chocolate, and maybe a candy hunt in the house. If it’s just a little rain, I think we’ll just head out and make the best of it. Where I grew up, we always had to have costumes that accommodated snowsuits because Canada.

We make the hot dog mummies every year – huge hit in our house!
Weather forecast is a little up in the air right now – if it’s light rain we’ll still head out but will go to the mall if it’s pouring. Our trunk or treat was rained out this past weekend as well. Weather can be so frustrating this time of year.

You guys are TOO CUTE!
We were too busy to carve pumpkins this past weekend, so we’re probably doing that either tonight or Halloween night too!

@catgirl: The mall Trick or Treating is tonight…not tomorrow!

@jennlin821: the trunk or treat special event is tonight. The actual store to store trick or treating is still tomorrow night! The Facebook event page for tonight talks about the difference. But thanks! Would have hated to mess it up haha

Awesome costumes and ideas!! Our town actually rescheduled trick-or-treating to this upcoming Saturday afternoon for weather reasons. I’ve always said the folks in Chicago had more grit than those down here in Lexington but I guess in this case I prefer it so I don’t have to take the kids out when it’s freezing!!

@bhbee: Yes, I’m also glad we got to participate in a Halloween event this past weekend and wear our costumes. I’ll be joining you with those mummies tomorrow

@Mommy Finger: It sounds like there’s pretty crummy weather all over the place. Hope it’s not too bad for you tomorrow if you guys are all bundled up!

@tinyperson: Your indoor plan sounds pretty amazing. Most Halloween’s for us are cold…you would think I would learn by now that we should always consider warm costumes!

@tinyperson: your indoor plan sounds pretty amazing. Most Halloween’s here are cold…you would think I would learn by now to have costumes that work well with more layers. Our costumes definitely would not look so cute with snowsuits
