Looking back at the things we google search can be quite revealing of what has been consuming our minds. I thought it would be fun and insightful to explain what has been going on here in the Pizza household by giving you a glimpse of the types of things I googled the first two weeks postpartum.
In no particular order:
“pink stain in diaper”
The pink stain in the diaper is caused by highly concentrated urine. The urine when very concentrated causes urate crystals and causes the pink stain to form. It is fairly normal in the early days of a newborn but it is still something to keep a close eye on. Because I was still waiting for my milk to come in, I wanted to be very mindful of the number of wet diapers she had each day and made note of when I saw the pink stain again since I wanted to be sure she would not be dehydrated. I did bring it up with the pediatrician when I was concerned about Pizza #3 possibly being dehydrated.”
“signs of dehydration in a newborn”
On the third day, my milk came in so I was relieved and feeling optimistic about breastfeeding. After a nursing session, I realized that while she fell asleep quickly, the milk did not transfer and she actually did not drink any milk. I then decided to give her formula during her next feeding and she guzzled it down and slept a straight 3 hours, which was a big change from her sleep the first two days when she would wake up after 20 minutes or so crying. The next day, she was having a harder time waking up even after a stretch of 3 hours of sleep. She appeared lethargic, not interested in feedings and I felt like I had to constantly do different things to try to wake her. I did end up calling my pediatrician this day to explain the things I noticed. She encouraged me to try different things to keep her awake during feedings (bother her by tapping her legs, use a wet wash cloth on her body). She told me to also make sure to wake and feed her every 3 hours.
“goopy eyes in newborn”
There was a lot of yellow discharge in both her eyes that were very noticeable the first two days we were home. Her pediatrician later told me that it was likely due to a blocked tear duct and that it usually resolves itself. If after a year, it is still an issue, then she would need a procedure done to unblock the tear duct. In the mean time, the pediatrician recommended gently massaging the area by the tear duct with a warm washcloth.
“lactaction consultant near me”
I’ve always had trouble breastfeeding and didn’t do it for very long with the other girls. I did go to a lactation consultant with all of them and even though I don’t view breastfeeding with them a “success”, I still found meeting with a lactation consultant to be very beneficial. I had trouble finding a lactation consultant that accepted my insurance. There was one that I went to near me with Pizza #2 so I thought I could always fall back on that one, but their policy changed to only accept babies that were seen by the pediatricians in that office. I tried three different lactation consultants before I found one that accepted my insurance. It was frustrating because there was so much time wasted calling different lactation consultants, as well as my insurance, which didn’t seem to have clear guidelines of who they accepted either. If I were to do it again, I would definitely have gotten this figured out before the baby was born.
“Correct latch and positioning”
When Pizza #3 wasn’t taking in any of my milk, I felt like I should review how to correctly latch again. I also always heard about the “laid back” positioning as a good one to try if the other more common positions didn’t work well.
“Nipple shield sizes”
I was using a nipple shield as encouraged by the lactation consultant at the hospital but realized when I got home that I may have an incorrect size.
. . . . .
While this is my third child, I realized those first two weeks can still be just as overwhelming as the first or second child. Every little thing feels concerning and there is still so much to learn and relearn. I feel much better now that she’s 4 weeks old now, but still find myself googling so many random questions.
What are some of the things you have google searched with your newborn baby or your child recently?

Great idea for a post, wish I could look up what I googled back then! I probably did look up the goopy eyes because I know DS had a blocked tear duct.
Add to that list “red dot on head” because DS had a strawberry and I had no idea what it was.
