Since Drake has almost finished the Harry Potter series, I have been looking around to see what other book series I can find to draw his attention. Many of these books were under the tree this year, and there are a few I’m interested in trying myself.
The Wild Robot – A shorter series, two books only, it comes highly recommended both from friends, librarians, and reviewers. It follows the story of Roz the robot and her life out alone in the wilderness coupled with fun illustrations. I’m curious to see where this premise goes since it’s such a highly tauted book.
The 13 Story Treehouse – Drake mentioned his friend at school was reading this series and he was interested in trying himself. It’s a graphic novel kind of series that involves two boys and an ever growing tree house (one that grows 13 stories at a time it seems). Drake has read quite a few other graphic novel series like Amulet and Secret Coders and enjoyed them and this one seems geared for boys of his age in both humor and tone.
The Book Scavengers – As soon as I saw this book’s title I knew I had to get it for Drake… and for myself! What better book series is there for a kid who loves mysteries, puzzles, scavenger hunts as well as books. I would absolutely love to join a real life book scavenger hunt and I think Drake would too, so I have really high hopes in seeing where this book takes us.
The Fourteenth Goldfish – The blurb on this book talks about the mix of science and humor as the main character meets a boy that reminds her of her grandfather, the same grandfather who had been searching for a potion to make him immortal. Could this same boy be her grandfather after all? The series seems to be up Drake’s alley in curious exploration of scientific notions mixed with humor perfect for his age. I’m looking forward to seeing his reaction.
Case Closed – If you grew up reading pick your own adventure books as a kid, then this series will bring you back. Drake has never experienced a choose your own adventure book before so I’m excited to venture into one with him.
The Vanderbeekers of 141 Street – The charming little cover drew me in. The blurb tells a story about a family working to save their beloved home after their landlord decided to not renew their lease. It sounds like a story about family bonds and working together, and also dealing with real life problems like losing your home. I’m interested in exploring this series alongside Drake to see if it helps him to think beyond the world he currently knows, and grow an understanding of how not everyone lives the same way as he does.
The Mysterious Benedict Society – Drake really loves mystery books and solving puzzles and riddles and when looking up books to fit that category, this series constantly popped up. The title itself draws you in and I have heard from a few friends that it’s a delightful and fun series.
The Terrible Two – I would be remiss not to add in this delightful series that Drake and I actually read over the summer. To say it is one of my favorite book series Drake has read would be an understatement. I recommend it every time someone asks for a book for their son. The story is simple enough — two boys who love pulling pranks at their school, mostly against their befuddled principal. But beyond the ingenious and at times hilarious moments is really a sweet touching story of friendship and the bonds kids make together. It’s a four part series with a bittersweet ending even I was not prepared for at first. I’m so glad Drake introduced me to this series and I loved every minute I got to spend in Yawnee Valley.

The Wild Robot is my favorite new YA book of the past several years! Can’t wait to hear what Drake thinks of it. I am definitely adding a few others here to my list.

I’m so excited about this list! I definitely will be adding them to my reading list with my 7 year old. We loved The Wild Robot – it’s a very easy book to read out loud and it’s a great book for an intermediate reader. It’s exciting and has enough adventure and sentimentality for both child and parent to get very different perspectives from the same book. And The Mysterious Benedict Society is so fun! It’s a bit harder to read out loud but we’ve gotten through all 4 books.
