When Wagon Sr. and I decided to start trying to get pregnant with our second child, I started to research methods on conceiving a girl. Wagon Jr. is a very active little boy, and even though Wagon Sr. and I would have loved to have had a second boy, I figured we might as well try for a girl since we’re pretty sure we’ll be two and through.
With a quick google search, I came across the Shettles Method. In conception, the gender of the baby is determined by the sperm that fertilizes the egg. The theory behind the Shettles Method is that male sperm are faster but more fragile than female sperm, and acidic environments harm male sperm. So, according to the theory, there are several techniques you can employ to stave off the faster, weaker male sperm and raise your chances that the sperm that reaches the egg first is female. Or you can employ the opposite to favor the male sperm. Here are the three techniques:
- Timing of intercourse. Male sperm will reach the egg faster, but female sperm will survive in your body longer. To try for a girl, you should baby dance 2-3 days before ovulation. According to the theory, the stronger female sperm will live in your body for several days while the weaker male sperm die off, so when the egg reaches your fallopian tube, there will be far more female sperm left in your body than male. To try for a boy, you should try as soon after ovulation as possible, since the male sperm will get to the egg faster.
- Sexual position. Apparently, the entrance to the vagina is the most acidic area, which hurts the weaker male sperm. To try for a girl, shallow penetration will allow the slower but stronger female sperm to prevail. To try for a boy, deeper penetration will deposit the sperm at the least acidic area, closer to the uterus opening, and allow more of the faster male sperm to survive and beat the female sperm to the egg.
- Female orgasm. Apparently this makes the environment more alkaline, which favors the male sperm. To try for a girl, do not reach orgasm. To try for a boy, reach orgasm.

This all made sense to us as far as Wagon Jr.’s conception, since we tried on the day of ovulation, and the sexual position and orgasm situation were aligned with the method for conceiving a boy. So since we weren’t in a huge rush to get pregnant with our second, we decided to try this method, even though it’s widely discredited by all kinds of scientific research. I have no idea whether or not the method really did increase our chances of having a girl, but it worked!
I actually find the Shettles Method to make sense, and also to be a little funny. Women do tend to live longer than men, and I believe they are stronger (I think the human race would be extinct if men had to go through childbirth), while men tend to be physically faster but die sooner. After our experiment with the Shettles Method, I joked to Wagon Sr. that if we were in fact pregnant, I’d think the baby would turn out to be a strong, willful person because the sperm would have lived inside my body for 3 days and fought harder than all the other sperm around it. I also believed that it was impossible for me to be pregnant when we had tried days before ovulation, that I even had a drink of alcohol the next night. Imagine my surprise (and chagrin when looking back on that drink!) when a pregnancy test 3 weeks later was positive!!
I now joke constantly about Wagon Sr.’s super sperm. (Sorry, Wagon Sr.!) And I’m half-delighted, half-afraid of the strong, willful girl growing inside of me. While I’m thrilled to be having a daughter, I know we will constantly butt heads since I’m also willful with a strong personality.
Did you have success in using techniques to conceive a specific gender?

How neat! We are having a girl first which my DH wanted so badly! He would have been happy with a son but said he always felt like he would have daughters. He cried when he saw that she was a she and remained emotional even a few days after. He says a boy would be fun eventually but would be very happy having only girls.

I read about this in the Taking Charge of Your Fertility book, I’m eager to see if this worked for anyone else. It certainly seems to make a lot of sense.
I wonder if Hubs would catch on… it kinda reminds me of the How I Met Your Mother episode with Lily eating lemons and Marshall positioning her Southeast

Everything I’ve read about it says it’s a load of crap, BUT in my Mom’s family it has supposedly been the only way anyone has conceived a boy (my little brother and 3 boy cousins).

Love it- but since I already have a girl I won’t do anything special to try for another. I still have mixed feelings on what I want next- I’m sure LO would love a sister but my husband really wants a boy. So I’ll be happy with either.

All I can say is I said a little prayer, wished on a star, crossed my fingers. I have three ( one three and twin two year old) boys. They are crazy active destructive litle boys who are absolutely the light of my life but man they are exhausting. I lucked out and now have a four month old mellow baby girl. It might come back to haunt me in the teenage years but for now it’s nice.

HAHA. I learned about the timing of sex in class, but didn’t know about 2-4!
So funny. We have a daughter already, and I’d love another girl, but I can’t be thinking about stuff like this when I’m having sex–it ruins it for me!
Will keep #4 in mind though

We inadvertently tried the Shettles method. I’d read somewhere else that you have a better chance of getting a girl if you baby dance 3 days before ovulation (didn’t realize at the time there was a whole method around this theory). Since I wanted a girl, and was the one familiar with my cycle, I aimed for the 3-day mark. I think we hit it pretty dead-on (and nature stepped in to not give us enough time to BD again before ovulating) and we are expecting a baby girl!
DH might try to exert a little more control over the situation if we have another kid because he really wants a boy.

Hehe, fun post! I always wonder if this actually works!

When we wanted #2, we really didn’t care if it was a boy or girl… we just wanted to get pregnant! In the month we did get pregnant, according to my chart and in relation to this theory, we shouldve had a boy. But nope, we defied the odds and had our second GIRL

DH has been telling his friends of this method behind choosing gender naturally and a lot of them laugh at him, saying its crazy! I, on the other hand, believe the method works because we conceived DD 3 days prior to O. We were using NFP as our birth control method and I figured we wouldnt get pregnant since its a much lower percentage on that day (oh how wrong I was). Low and behold, 4 weeks later we got a BFP! At the anatomy scan DH was pretty sure it would be a girl based on the Shettles method.

I wanted a girl for my second and so we tried having sex every day from one week to about 3 days before my likely ovulation day and then stopping. We got our girl! I’m not sure if it was the timing or luck, but I figured it was worth a try.

Just one tiny quibble, fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube, not the uterus… which really makes the whole process even more amazing! We didn’t try a method, but just left things up to fate

When we were trying for our 2nd we also researched the shettles method, and like you weren’t in any rush to concieve so we thought we’d try it…and it worked for us as well on the first try! Sadly, we lost our girl at 14 weeks and it took us 6+ months to conceive again. We didn’t try the shettles method (at that point we just wanted to get pregnant and the gender didn’t matter), but found out in December that we are indeed expecting a girl again! It was such a bittersweet moment for us and I’ll be getting my girl after all this June.

Yeah, I’ve heard of all of these “methods.” As a molecular biologist, I think it’s all bologna. Our first was a girl and the only “method” we tried for a boy was crossing out fingers. We lucked out, but I think it’s only that- luck.

I believe it! Based on when I knew I conceived, I was pretty sure I knew what gender I was having…and the ultrasound confirmed it! So, you never know

i don’t buy into it, but it’s an interesting theory and def i could see it making conditions more conducive to one gender, but somehow i feel like it’s more God than anything else.

I think we’ll probably try this with baby #2 because I know I really want a girl one day. Hopefully it works, but if not, I’ll be happy with a healthy baby, regardless of gender.

According to Shettles we should be having a boy–but we are expecting a little girl!

We BD’d 3 days before ovulation and I thought for sure we weren’t pregnant. But we were! I’d read about the timing in Shettles’ idea and so thought for sure it must be a girl. But it wasn’t! We’re expecting a boy. I don’t put much stock in the “method” personally

Ok my husband and I have been trying to concieve a girl by using the sheetles method. We have a 2 year old boy and he’s the light of my life. I would love for him to have a little sister to look after! We’ll be happy with a healthy baby as we’ll boy or girl. Just really want a girl, so I can braid her hair, play dress up, ect. We’ve been trying for 3 months now and nothing. I went to the obgyn and she said I’m fertile and everything looks great. Could there be something wrong with my mans female swimmers? We had sex 2 days before I ovulated last month. I know this because i have very regular cycles and used opks. We had our little boy in the first month of trying. Is the sheetles method a load of bs? Does it promote no pregnancy? This month were going to try 36 hours before I ovulated. I just feel down in the dumps and disappointed. Every month I get my hopes up and every month I’m let down. Thank u for your answers in advance.

Okay, Wagon, I was reading some old posts and just want to pull these quotes out of this one for you. Hehehe.
“After our experiment with the Shettles Method, I joked to Wagon Sr. that if we were in fact pregnant, I’d think the baby would turn out to be a strong, willful person because the sperm would have lived inside my body for 3 days and fought harder than all the other sperm around it.”

Spot on?

@Mrs. Blue: oh Blue, how you get me…! Yes ma’am, a tear sprung to my eye as I read your comment because, yes, that’s my girl. I’m thankful because she really is a little ME… But I’m still terrified of her really. Haha.

Thanks for this post Mrs. Wagon! Did you do any special diets as well. Also when did you know you ovulated? Did you use any kits? thanks!
