My pregnant body is evolving, and one thing I’m hoping to avoid are stretch marks. I have plenty left over from puberty, so I’d like to skip adding any more to my collection. According to the Mayo Clinic, stretch marks are formed when your skin stretches at a rapid pace and you have an increase in the hormone cortisone. Puberty and pregnancy provide the perfect conditions for stretch marks, as your body shape and size changes rapidly and your hormones fluctuate all over the place.
The jury is still out as to whether or not stretch marks are preventable. Many think that genetics play a roll, and as a result, there’s very little you can do to avoid them. Some sites suggest that stretch marks affect up to 90% of pregnant women – so chances seem good that you’ll probably see at least a few.
Even though I might not be able to prevent them, I figured it was at least worth a try. So, for the past month, I’ve been putting all kinds of lotions and potions on my stomach. Many dermatologists recommend using a product that contains lots of cocoa butter or shea butter, and applying it 2-4 times a day to keep your skin supple. I looked for products that contained these ingredients, as well as those marketed specifically for stretch marks.
My selection criteria for trying different products was based on their rating in the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. The Environmental Working Group maintains this huge database which rates the toxicity of almost 75,000 cosmetic products. I figure if you’re eating organic foods, you might as well think about all the other things that you’re putting onto or into your body. Since I was going to be rubbing this stuff on my stomach a few times a day, I decided I’d only try products that had a rating in the rage of 0-2 – these are the ones with the lowest hazard rating; the higher the number, the more hazardous the product.
My Reviews:
1) Mother Love Pregnant Belly Salve
Price: $12.95 for a 4 oz. jar
Skin Deep Rating: 0
Consistency: A little thicker than Vaseline
Scent: It smells like someone poured chamomile tea on my belly. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if you’re putting it on at night, and you associate chamomile with sleep. There are also some lavender notes mixed in.
Ease of application: I hate stuff in jars where I have to dig my fingers in to get the product — it always gets under my nails. Once I had it out of the jar, it was relatively easy to rub in.
Effectiveness: When I was done applying, my hands didn’t feel greasy – just soft, but my belly was a little slick twelve hours after the fact. Maybe that’s a good thing because it’s keeping the skin supple?
Overall: The chamomile scent was a little too strong for me, and I hated getting the salve underneath my fingernails as I was applying it.
2) Queen Helene Cocoa Butter Belly Cream
Price: $4.05 for an 8 oz bottle
Skin Deep Rating: 2
Consistency: Very thick lotion – more like a body butter
Scent: Medicinal – kind of like plastic. I’m not a fan, and the scent alone is enough to make me dislike this product.
Ease of application: Squirt from the tube to hand, and rub it in with relative ease.
Effectiveness: It moisturizes, but my skin doesn’t feel super supple later in the day, as it does with some of the other products.
Overall: I’ll pass. I’m a sucker for things that smell good, and although I like other things about the product, including the great price, the scent is enough to make me look for something else.
3) Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Stretch Oil
Price: $11.90 for 4 oz pump bottle
Skin Deep Rating: 0
Consistency: A little less viscous than baby oil.
Scent: I love anything that smells like citrus, so I like this scent better than anything else. Sometimes the citrus reminds me of orange Goo Gone, but I’m the only one that smells that. Mr. Tricycle and friends think it reminds them more of Fruit Stripe gum.
Ease of application: The oil comes in a bottle with a little pump, so I can squirt right on my stomach. It takes a little bit of time to rub it in, but it’s manageable.
Effectiveness: Like the others, my skin feels slightly tacky afterwards, but in a good away. I’ve also used it on my legs after shaving, and it absorbs really well, leaving them quite smooth afterwards.
Overall: This is my favorite of all the brands I sampled. A few girlfriends that tried it out weren’t totally sold, as they thought it felt greasy. This doesn’t bother me at all, but keep in mind it is an oil. Maybe it’s the type of product that most people would prefer to apply at night, rather than putting “good” clothes over your slightly slippery skin.
4) CocoCare 100% Cocoa Butter Stick
Price: $1.04 for a 1 oz stick
Skin Deep Rating: 0
Consistency: Like a jumbo tube of lip balm
Scent: It smells very strongly of chocolate.
Ease of application: I liked the stick application, though in rubbing it across my stomach, I used a lot. I think a stick might only last a week or two if you’re applying it two times a day, though at around a $1.00 a stick, it’s still affordable. Rubbing it in took a little more effort, but it wasn’t unmanageable.
Effectiveness: As with other products, my skin was still slightly tacky and supple twelve hours after application.
Overall: The chocolate scent was too overpowering to use every day, though the stick applicator makes it great for travel or to carry in your purse as a general moisturizer.
5) Mountain Ocean Mother’s Special Blend Skin Toning Oil
Price:$13.54 for an 8 oz bottle
Skin Deep Rating: 0
Consistency: Like baby oil – a little thinner than the Earth Mama oil
Scent: This oil has a lot of cocoa butter in it, so like other cocoa butter products, it smells like chocolate. It’s not unpleasant, just not a scent I love.
Ease of application: I like the Earth Mama oil better because I can use the pump bottle to put it directly on my stomach. In contrast, I have to pour the Mountain Ocean oil on my hand first, and then rub it in – not a big deal, but I can be a little lazy.
Effectiveness: Like the other products, my skin still felt moisturized long after initial application.
Overall: Keep in mind that this product, like the Earth Mama, is an oil. You’re going to feel a little bit slippery – to me, not a detriment, but it might bother some people.
6) Woltra 100% Cocoa Butter Stick
Price: $1.59 for a 1 oz tube
Skin Deep Rating: 0
Consistency: Like a huge tub of lip-balm
Scent: The cocoa butter in this product makes it smell faintly of chocolate.
Ease of application: The stick is easy to use – apply it directly on your stomach, and then rub in.
Effectiveness: My skin still felt great at bedtime after an early morning application.
Overall: Very similar to the Cococare yellow stick, but the scent is less overpowering.
Price: $14.37 for an 8 oz bottle
Skin Deep Rating: 2
Consistency: Out of all the products I tried, this one was the thinnest and most lotion-like. It didn’t feel watery by any means, but it definitely wasn’t a cream or a body butter.
Scent: Unlike a lot of the other products, this does not smell like chocolate because it utilizes shea butter instead of cocoa butter. One friend thought the smell reminded her of the essential oils used for massages, so she equated the scent with a calming feeling. I liked that it smelled good, but not overpowering.
Ease of application: I like the pump bottle, and because it was the thinnest product I tried, it was very easy to rub in.
Effectiveness: It tames itching right away, but it doesn’t have the same long-lasting impact that the other products do.
Overall: After trying everything, this product came in second place. I like the oil better, as I think its effects last longer, but my girlfriends preferred this one.

I quickly learned that my favorite products were those that smelled good and were easy to apply. Everything helped deal with the itchiness caused by stretching skin (not a symptom I was anticipating). I can’t comment on how well they work to actually prevent stretch marks, but I haven’t seen any new ones pop up yet. Cross your fingers!
Have you used the Skin Deep Database before? Is there a great stretch mark solution I missed?

I LOVE the Skin Deep database. I used it to change my facial cleanser, moisturizer, body wash, and body lotion once I got pregnant. It’s so great!
I’ve been wanting to get a stretch mark cream or something now that I’m 10+ weeks in, but wasn’t sure where to start. Thanks for doing the research for me! Hee hee.

This is an awesome post!!! Unfortunately I’ve come to the conclusion that stretch marks are genetic and there’s no avoiding them… BUT I do believe you can minimize them AND give them a better chance of fading as well as possible post pregnancy by using these great products. Skin is skin, after all, so whatever you can do to moisturize and improve elasticity has got to help.
I used plain cocoa butter lotion while pregnant (until the stretch marks got so disgusting that I gave up) and post pregnancy I used Bio-Oil which really sped up the healing process. Post pregnancy I went through about two weeks of frantically researching and sloughing off layers of skin, trying to get rid of my awful stretch mark damage. I think I was even mildly depressed about them. I had hundreds. I’m not even sure any of it helped, but 2 years later the skin is not even in any way shape or form, but the marks have all faded to white and are so much less noticeable.
The good news is that the second pregnancy is just stretching out the old stretch marks (that have since turned white) so it’s a lot less ugly this time… there are a few new stretch marks but they are nothing compared to the first time around, and I know they will fade with time as well.

I used the Earth Mama oil. I loved the scent but at first I was also putting it on my breasts and I think it made me break out on my chest. I stuck to using it on my belly and I had no stretch marks

@mrs. wagon: Agree. It’s genes. And if you’ve gotten them while gaining and losing weight in the past, you definitely won’t be avoiding them during pregnancy.
A word to the wise — they may fake you out! Mine didn’t show until like 35 or 36 weeks, but after that it was like they were everywhere. That seems to be the case for many women … nothing and then BAM.
Also, I did slather on a lot of cocoa butter. I smelled nice, but that’s about it.

I had no stretch marks until 36 or 38 weeks, I totally thought I avoided them too!
Now, 18 months post partum, they’re all gone. I haven’t done anything special, other than my usual body lotion after every shower.

I agree with @Mrs Wagon and @Mrs Yoyo…I did everything in my power to prevent stretch marks and I still go them. I actually didn’t have any going into the hospital, but the contractions gave my body that extra push and I definitely came out of the hospital with them. I thought I had only gotten them very lightly on my love handles, but then about a week post delivery a big one showed up to the side of my belly button. Total bummer. None of mine were the dark red kind, they are all light pink or white and I think the lotions I used helped in this department.

@looch: ah! that happened to me, too! nothing on my belly but on the side of my left hip I had a nice display of stretch marks.. I actually thought it was a rash when I first noticed them (38 weeks)
DS is 6 months old now and they’re completely gone

My mom had three kids and no stretch marks. I hope I’m that lucky!

a friend used stretch mark cream religiously with her first child and had no stretch marks. didn’t use it for her second, and ended up with horrible stretch marks. so i don’t know if it is entirely hereditary!
i used cream with charlie and didn’t with olive, but didn’t end up with stretch marks. my mom doesn’t have any though, so maybe it’s genetics.

I’ve heard stretch marks are genetic. but I wasn’t taking any chances. I used the Earth Mama oil and didn’t get one. And I got huge towards the end with edema.

I used the Earth mama everyday and still got lots of stretch marks, but I loved the smell and feel of the oil. I use the leftover stuff on my sons bottom

Oh man, stretch marks showing up at the hospital? Bummer! Here I am all pumped because I’m 18 weeks and no new stretch marks, and then you all say you got them in the last few weeks…. nice, something to look forward to.

I was all geared up to get tons of stretch marks 1) because my mom has them and 2) because I already have quite a collection from puberty. But to my surprise, I didn’t get any! I religiously used the Vaseline cocoa butter body oil, for what it’s worth.

I’ve been using L’occitane 100% Pure Shea Butter and I love it! I’m 34 weeks and so far no stretch marks, hopefully they don’t decide to pop up in the next few weeks. My fingers are crossed that it’s genetics since my mom has 3 kids and no stretch marks!
As far as the Cocoa Butter, my husband and I took a Baby Prep class this weekend and the instructor warned us that Cocoa Butter has caffeine that soaks into your skin and passes over to your baby! Apparently this is all from more recent studies. Not sure if she’s right.

If it’s genetics, then I beat it. My mom and my sisters all had stretchmarks from pregnancy and I knew I still had to try to prevent it. I looked at all the ingredients from stretchmarks lotions and most if not all of them contains vitamin E oils in it. I got bottles of pure vitamin E oils from drug stores (extremely affordable if you get them buy one get one free) and apply directly to my belly every night and after every shower. It does get greasy but I am stretchmarks free from 2 pregnancies. I also apply mama mio’s belly butter because it just smells divine.

@Bebe – woah! I hadn’t thought about caffeine content or heard that it could be potentially harmful.
I did a quick search, and the most “scientific” info I can find is a blog post written by a biochemist: http://drholly.typepad.com/question_and_answer_forum/2006/03/cocoa_butter_fo.html
She basically says there’s nothing to worry about. Other “reputable” sources say there is no caffeine in cocoa butter, so it’s a non-issue.
The only references I can find about avoiding cocoa butter during pregnancy are in message board threads. Soo…I don’t have any definitive answers, but it’s good to consider all the potential issues with any product!

I’m with some of the other ladies…I thought I avoided them until they appeared in the very last few weeks! I noticed even more after my stomach deflated afterwards. Not sure if they were there and not noticeable or appeared later! They’ve almost disappeared at this point (10 months later) so I wouldn’t worry too much if you do get them!

I tried using cocoa butter lotion but couldn’t stand the smell, so I just stuck with my usual Vaseline Intensive Care Intensive Rescue (I think that’s the one – it has a blue top). Every night after showering, I would squirt two pumpfuls and rub it into my belly. This kept skin itchiness from stretching at bay (though around month 6 I occasionally had to do a boost midday). I thought I was destined for horrible stretch marks since my mom has them bad, but I got lucky and didn’t get a single one! I’d like to think it’s luck mixed with super hydrated skin that prevented them. I also drank a TON of water to keep hydrated too.

I didn’t consult skindeep when I used stretch mark creams, but I used BioOil 2x’s a day and Burt’s Bees momma bee 1x a day from 8w on. I didn’t get a single stretch mark even though I had them on my hips from puberty. Woohoo!

I think it’s worth a try to prevent them. I got lots of stretch marks through puberty but actually almost none through my first pregnancy. I haven’t been super-vigilant but try to stay moisturized and pay special attention any time I start to get itchy around my tummy – that seems to be a sign of skin stretching. My husband gives me a tummy rub most evenings before bed using a pretty basic almond oil. It’s a great way for him to have a little bonding time with the baby too!

Did you know that laser skin rejuvenation can drastically remove your stretchmarks as well?
