Lately I’ve been doing a lot of this:
And this:
It’s not the end of the world – just some spoiled milk and minutes lost searching, but other brain farts are a little more problematic. Last week, at Open House, a parent pulled me into the hall to look at my bulletin board. To my mortification, she pointed out an inappropriate example of student work that I had inadvertently posted. Thanks, teenagers, for taking advantage of my fogginess.
Poor Mr. Tricycle is suffering, too. I’ll admit that I can be easily distracted when I’m not pregnant, but it seems the problem has magnified during the last few weeks. For example, he’ll ask me to grab his phone off the dresser, but by the time I get downstairs, I’ve got a load of laundry, and an empty water glass, but no phone.
What gives? Is pregnancy brain a real thing? I’d love an excuse for all my recent slips.
Luckily, a number of different studies seem to suggest that memory loss during pregnancy is a real thing. One study compared pregnant women’s ability to recall a paragraph of material with non-pregnant women at different points in time. The researchers found that a significant decrease in recall occurred among the pregnant women between the second and third trimester, though they couldn’t attribute the decline to depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation, or other physical changes associated with pregnancy. A more recent study suggests that pregnant women suffer from a loss of spatial memory – the kind of memory that tells me where I left my cell phone, or where I dropped my keys. This study attributed the memory deficit to high levels of sex hormones negatively impacting neurons in the hippocampus region of the brain.
Although it helps to know there’s some scientific evidence for all my fogginess, it doesn’t make the problem go away. I’ve resorted to making all kinds of lists, and for the first time ever, setting up my iPhone to deliver reminders about important tasks. I’m asking colleagues to double check some of my work, and reminding myself that forgetting things when I come downstairs just means I get more exercise.
Did you notice a difference in memory and cognitive ability during pregnancy? Any tips for to help my brain survive the next nine weeks?

Definitely a difference! A few weeks ago, I put a pot of water on the stove to make some hard-boiled eggs for my husband, who was in the shower. I turned on the burner and went to sit down to wait for the water to boil. When I heard Hubs get out of the shower, I went upstairs, got in the shower, got out of the shower, dried my hair, and got dressed. Came down 20 minutes later to a pot that was just about empty because all of the water had boiled out of it.
And don’t even get me started on the places I’ve “lost” my keys and sunglasses!

And FYI – it doesn’t get better AFTER the baby either. Odds are you have more than 9 weeks left of absentmindedness. LO is 4 months old, and I’m finally starting to get my memory back (and not go through a pile of post-it notes each day making lists for myself).

Ugh, yes. 6 months ago, I had the brilliant plan of taking part 2 of a certification test related to my job at 7.5 months pregnant (which is today, actually). It requires a lot of memorization, and I’ve found it so difficult to store things away in my memory and organize things in my brain the way that I used to. i know that its not just because i’m older, because i took part 1 in March when i was 1 month preggo and that was fine. Pregnancy brain is real

@Goldilocks1107: ha ha. So true. My baby is 11 months old, and I still do things like forgetting my wallet at home when making my weekly grocery trip. I swear, I used to be a sharp, fully functioning adult before I had a baby

I’ve done things like that too while pregnant and after having both of my kids. I hate to say it but it won’t get any better.

Oh my goodness, yes! I had almost forgotten about this (it’s amazing how fast I’m forgetting things about less than a year ago) but I was the worst. I felt like I was losing my mind. I’m happy to report that my mind is back. Or maybe I’ve just learned to live with it

Ugh. I have this problem too and it’s getting worse. I’m 24 weeks and I used to take great pride in my memory. Not anymore.

Wegmans! I puffy heart LOVE Wegmans!
I was really scatterbrained all throughout pregnancy. I was notorious for starting a sentence, trailing off, and instantly forgetting I’d been saying something. And was bad about putting milk away in the cupboard and drinking glasses in the fridge. I had lists upon lists for everything so I could try to keep a handle on my life. And still do!

It doesn’t get much better after baby. I found a roll of scotch tape in my dishwasher the other day. And I’m still stopping at 4 ways and waiting for the stop sign to change to green so I can go.

@Goldilocks1107: Ugh, yes. I was reading about that…some studies say it can persist for up to a year after delivery…

My pregnant brain saw the second picture and thought, “Oh whoops! She bought too much Total.” I didn’t even see the milk jug. Haha.

Yes, unfortunately the preggo brain seems to stay long after the baby is delivered. I now rely on lists and phone reminders to get anything done.

@mole: Haha. That’s what happens when my coupon says I have to buy two to save a $1.00

It doesn’t help things when wegmans decides to move Things on the store, for the past month whenever I have gone in large areas of goods are just gone and I find them on the other side of the store! This makes me sound crazy, but I swear the bananas moved 30ft across the produce section last week lol!
