I can’t believe I’m putting this photo on the Internet, but I might as well get real. I was itching to Photoshop my zits and apply some virtual mascara, but I’m resisting the urge, ‘cause this is how I roll.
BEFORE: I can’t believe I’m posting this photo. I’m even wearing the Ergo — the baby just didn’t make the crop.
My new mom look left an awful lot to be desired. After I had the Trikester, I went twelve weeks without blow-drying my hair; most days it was knotted back in a messy bun as soon as I got out of the shower. I applied make-up only a handful of times, and my go-to wardrobe consisted of leggings and four over-sized flannel shirts I requested for my birthday. As you can see, it wasn’t pretty.
Before the baby I’ll admit to being lazy on the weekends, but when I was working I felt the need to look polished. For me, a professional look is “done” hair and make-up (check out this thread for an interesting discussion on make-up at work). For me, maternity leave was like one long weekend – no real reason to doing anything beyond the bare minimum.
Now that I’m back to work and life is starting to settle into our new “normal” I’m ready to get back in the game. Last week I decided it was a time for a new look to match my new life. Now that I’m a mama, my beauty priorities have changed. I no longer have twenty minutes to blow dry, and the Trikester just started grabbing my hair and giving it a good tug. It was time to cut it off. I also needed a change – I don’t want to fall into the habit of being a slouchy mama (at least not every day), and I wanted to do something to bump up my self-esteem. This new mom needed to feel a little “hip.”
It was time for a hair-cut; I’m calling it the post-baby chop. Here’s my new ‘do in all its newly cropped glory.
AFTER: A little make-up and a haircut can work wonders! Side note: No, I do not dye my hair. It’s a “birthmark” or something? I’ve got super pale blonde streaks in the front and back, and my eyelashes and eyebrows on one side of my face are blonde. #weirdo
Cutting my hair short forces me to do something with it every day. I can’t just scrape it into a ponytail. It’s also fantastic because it takes about five minutes from start to finish – I don’t even need a brush to blow-dry. The only downside is that there’s no “emergency” look for those mornings when I just don’t have five minutes. I haven’t quite figured out how to conquer that yet.
While I was at the whole makeover process, I got myself some new glasses, too. I didn’t want to break the bank, so I ordered a pair online for $50. I used a photo to “try them on” online, but it’s not quite the same thing as picking out a pair in person.
My new specs – don’t know if I’ll buy a pair online again. I loved the price, but I think it might be worth paying a little more to try them in real life.
What do you think? Wear the glasses or leave them in the drawer? Mr. Tricycle thinks they give me bug-eyes and he vastly prefers my old pair. I won’t be AT ALL insulted if the general consensus is to scrap this pair of glasses. What’s your vote?
Did you change your look after you had a baby?

I actually love the glasses! And really great haircut and I am jealous of your birthmark. How cool!

Your hair is gorgeous! I have hair-envy! I’ve been somewhat tempted to chop mine as well but fear not having the ponytail option as a backup.
I don’t love the glasses (sorry!!).
I had a babysitter growing up that had a streak from a birthmark too…my sister and I thought she was the coolest!

You look so great. I love your hair! and I love the glasses too!

I LOVE your new hairdo. A friend of mine in high school had the same type of “birthmark” with her hair and eyebrow. I would probably leave the glasses at home…. (said as kindly as possible)!!!

Love love love the haircut!
Meh on the glasses. Said with love.

I adore your haircut! I wish I could pull something like that off, but I just don’t have the time to blowdry/straighten every day. I like the glasses too.
A friend of mine from college has the same birthmark with her hair and eyebrow, and the eye on that side is blue (her other eye is brown). I always liked the uniqueness.

I think I like the shape of the glasses, but think maybe they’re a just a little too big for your face. LOVE the hair.

LOVE the haircut, and your hair color is so cool! I like the shape of the glasses for the shape of your face, but I think they might be just a tad too large. I bought some that seem like a similar shape from Warby Parker and I really like them. They were a bit more expensive ($90 for frames and lenses) but still not bad! I have the Sims frames
I totally know what you mean about the virtual try-on, though. I got lucky that Warby Parker has a showroom here in NYC, otherwise it would have been harder to choose.

Great haircut! Is the front long enough that you could pull it out of your face with a barrette or bobby pins as an emergency plan? I would also skip the glasses i think…

OMG!! I’m totally in love with your new hair do. You totally rock it girl. As for the glasses, I’m eh about them. Sorry!!

Your new haircut is nice! and… I think the glasses are cute! But, maybe we could see a photo of your older pair? Hard to compare.

You look AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am seriously a million percent jealous of your streak and your cool half blond side. I think it is so beautiful and unique. The new cut and your makeup make you look so sleek and beautiful but also natural- you don’t look all made up. Great work, mama!!! Seriously impressed and now wishing I had a cool “birthmark” like that!

I think the new glasses are kind of awesome
but I love big frames. Love your new hair – impressed with your gutsy-ness to do “the chop”

Hey y’all- an FYI, Warby Parker, Tortoise and Blonde, and most other online glasses retailers have a “try on at home” program where they will ship you 5 frames for free to try out for a week to see what they look like on your face. Free shipping and return too.
Cute, cute new hair cut! And I love how you put just a little makeup on- I think you look fine without, but with just a touch you just look more “polished”(thanks for proving that yes, makeup does make one look more put together!)

love the new ‘do and the new glasses! and you have the coolest birthmark EVER, I’m jealous!

Very cute! Love the glasses!!! Post-baby I had a bit of a fashion identity crisis. I didn’t want to wear anything I owned, and I didn’t want to wear “mom” jeans, bulky tops…I re-did my wardrobe a bit. I added a lot of fun colors and patterns/prints, and I also got a pair of new frames (although I had to since baby broke my original pair!).

Cute hair, loose the glasses. Buy new ones in person. Seriously, it’s worth it.

@Pink Champagne: I have never heard of these places!! Maybe I’ll check them out and give it another go! And ya, no way is my “naked” face as equally professional as my “made-up” face — even though it kills the feminist in me, a little make-up IS more professional – IMO.

You are one hot mama!! LOVE your new ‘do and that’s the coolest birthmark I’ve ever heard – people pay good money for “streaks” like that!
I’m currently 2-weeks postpartum and totally in mom-crisis mode right now. My hair is tied up every day and I’m living in my maternity cotton t-shirts and leggings. I haven’t had the courage to try on normal jeans again and I am in desperate need of a wardrobe makeover.

For the glasses they look too big for your face. If you have an old pair that you like check out on the bridge or one of the arms it should have numbers that will tell you the demensions you are looking for, in terms of arm length, width of the frame and then the width of the bridge.
You are lucky you can blow dry in 5 minutes, I kept my hair at chin length because I can slap on a head band, or pull the sides back in a clip without drying my hair. That length alone takes about 20 minutes, I miss my ponytail.
I still don’t do make up didn’t do it before birth except a handful of times and don’t now. I would rather sleep than put on make up.

i love this post!!!
and i love your new ‘do, hot momma!!
i really like the glasses, but i’m wondering if it’s the quality of the lenses? when i get cheapy lenses, the glare and the extra thickness make my eyes look buggy. then again i have REALLY bad eyes and have to have triple-condensed lenses so they don’t look like coke-bottles!

You all do awesome things for my self esteem! So I think we’ll ditch the glasses. I wear contacts most of the time anyway, so no biggie. It was hard knowing how big to go — larger frames are “in” but I guess it’s hard to strike the right balance. @Mrs. Cowgirl: I’m thinking it might be the quality of the lens – they’re weird in a few ways. Back to the drawing board. Thanks everyone for your input!!!
@Mrs. High Heels: It took me 12 weeks to get out of the hot mess stage. I don’t think I was even showering at 2 weeks PP.
@MamaCate: I start rocking bobby pins as soon as I get home from work – I can only tolerate bangs for about 8 hours a day. I think I could get away will pulling them back for work.

I love your new hair! I’m not a fan of the glasses, sorry!

Love the new hair! I agree with most ppl on the glasses. You can still wear them at home though so they won’t completely be a waste purchase. My husband did the same thing and bought one online as well bc it came with clip on shades. He only wears it when he has to get his eyes checked.

you look good with the glasses and without!

Okay, I’m now at 4 months pp and it is time to do something like this. I do the whole pull-your-wet-hair-into-a-messy-bun thing and I’m tired of it. I think I will be calling my hairdresser tomorrow for an appointment. Thanks for the inspiration! And you look fabulous!

I’m another person who loves Warby Parker.I liked that I got 5 pairs to try on at home and of course then asked all my friends on facebook and twitter which ones they liked best.

Oh… I love the new look! I cut my hair in a similar style when I became a Mama (time was of the essence and all that) but I paid big bucks to essentially replicate your birthmark. Is it wrong to be jealous!!?
PS – Way to go putting the “before” shot out there… not sure I could!
