I had to look back in the baby books for this one. I feel bad that I can’t remember all the dates for every kid. Looking at their baby books I realized just how incomplete their books are. Now I need to go fill things in.
James
rolling over both ways -5 months
sleeping through the night – 11 months
first tooth – 3 months
sitting up (getting to a sitting position on their own and staying there) – 9 months
belly crawling – 7 months
real crawling – 8 months
standing – 8 months
cruising – 8 months
first word – Dada at 7 months and then almost nothing until he was 2.
first steps – 10 months
walking – 12 months
potty training – 3 years, 10 months. We tried the summer he was 2.5 He refused and had huge temper tantrums in the bathroom. He was having horrible constipation issues that we have been dealing with for two years now. We gave up and figured we would try the following summer. When he was 3.5 we started up again, and this time it was more successful. It took a couple of months but he was fully potty trained by 3 years 10 months.

Nick (all of his milestones were around the same time as Joe; they were only a week different in most cases. Nick was usually behind Joe in the physical milestones like rolling over or walking, but he was ahead in the milestones like smiling babbling and talking)
rolling over – both ways @ 3 months
sleeping through the night – 12 months
first tooth – 7 months
sitting up – 7 months
belly crawling – 6 months
real crawling – 7 months
standing – 7 months
cruising – 7 months
first word – 10 months
first steps – 8 months
walking – 8 months
potty training – 3.5 years. We let them play in the bathroom when we tried to train James. At that point they were just turning two. When it wasn’t working out with James, we stopped forcing them as well. We started up again right as they were turning three. It also took a few months. By 3.5 years they were completely trained.

potty training – 2 years 6 months old (we started at 18 months and it was going really well, but he lost interest and we didn’t push it since Olive was going to be born shortly. When we tried again, he was really interested in the potty because the older kids at daycare were already using it.)
Olive
rolling over – 6 months
sleeping through the night – 13 months, but then was sick months 14-15 and waking up a lot, and we sleep trained at 16 months

Olive was born 5 weeks early and has low muscle tone. She’s also a very cautious girl which is a big reason why she hit physical milestones so late. On the plus side, I never had to worry about her falling like I did with Charlie!

When did your little one hit the major milestones?
apricot / 275 posts
This is great information! As H is now 7.5 months old & crawling all over the place, it’s great to see other averages. I keep wondering when her first tooth is going to pop through!!
nectarine / 2964 posts
This is great! It makes me feel good on some aspects (because we were advanced haha) and not too bad on other aspects (eg. rolling over, first words). It truly shows and proves to me that all babies advance in different paces and that chart we are following is just a guideline.
I wish we had a log like this on our individual profiles because I’d never put these information in one place, and then I’d forget about them!
What I am curious to know is when did everyone’s LO starts talking (or is there a “date” for it? I have no idea as we haven’t gotten there yet), and if all the early STTN babies are/were breastfed or (partially) formula fed.
apricot / 457 posts
@Mrs. Wagon – I think J and my LO are really similar – they’re just really big heavy babies. Owen is 11 months old (24 lbs) and is pretty behind in his developments. He JUST learned how to get himself into a sitting position two weeks and just started crawling last week. Before he would roll around to get places but even then, he didn’t learn how to do that until 9 months. I think J is ok. The extra chub makes it hard!

@Mrs. Popcorn … my 4 month old seems to be similar to yours! I’m getting eager for her to roll …. except I appreciate “easy” diaper changes
Also, I love when they babble perfectly along with conversation … cutest thing ever

I’d love to know what all of the babies’ first words were and if they consistently used it to refer to something from that point on…

I thought my son is slow in many milestones but after reading this, it seems like he’s about average especially for boy: rolling over both sides at 5 months, sitting up at 7, crawling at 10 and walking at 15 months. He said his first word at 10 months and won’t be surprise if he does not pick up more until he’s two as Mr. Train points out about her son. Thanks for the great post

@irene: i would say charlie had enough words to “talk” around 15 months. and both he and olive were not on formula when they sttn.
clementine / 943 posts
@irene: I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have an early STTN baby (slept through at 3 months and has been ever since) and he is exclusively breastfed (well, eating solids now that he’s 8 months but you know what I mean). For us, it took getting the baby out of our room into his crib to get him to sleep.
Anyway, great swarm!! It really is amazing how differently babies develop!

@Mrs. Bee: What…. do I have a serious problem or what because we still don’t quite have the first words at 14+ months (he says mama, 15% of the time i think he’s referring to me but not very clear)……
@Pink Champagne: You are one lucky gal!!
I want to play too! We are now 14.5 months.
rolling over – 6 months both ways
STTN – 7.5 months for 11-12 hours straight, with occasional regression period especially when sick. (EBF till 6 months, solids + EBF till 8 months)

sitting up – 5 months – staying in a placed sitting position – 3 months
belly crawling – 5.5 months
real crawling – 6 months

cruising – 6 months
first word – he says mama since 13+ mos but doesn’t really refer to me, so no first words yet
first steps – 10 months
walking – 11.5 months
potty training – not yet

@irene: charlie was a little advanced when it came to talking. i think that they want at least 1-2 words by 15 months.
one trick that worked with olive was just to say the same word over and over and over again. we did this with ball when we wer holding a ball, and she picked up ball pretty quickly. she is delayed with speech, but she has about 15-20 words at 18 months. Charlie probably had closer to 100 at that age.
nectarine / 2964 posts
@Mrs. Bee: Thanks! I am trying not to stress but wow, I can not even imagine how could my LO get 15-20 words by 18 months. 15 month check up is coming end of this month, ie. 2 weeks.
Are your kids bi/trilingual? Do you guys all speak English at home, or some Korean/Japanese/English mixed in together? We are trying to speak only Chinese (Cantonese) at home (which has been more like 65% Chinese 35% English now… but we are really trying), and they speak English and some Spanish at daycare.
I think adding to our issue was the recurring ear infection problem that he has since the beginning of year. We just went to an ENT specialist earlier in the week, and LO does have some temporary hearing loss. It is not *too* bad, he could hear conversations, but probably not too well in, say, a noisy classroom.
Regardless, I have decided not to be stressed even there are talented kids like Charlie out there !
ETA: We do repeat the same word over and over and over and over too…. everyday when I pick him up at daycare and putting him in the carseat, I’d point at the light above his head (on the ceiling of the car) and say “dung” (Light in Cantonese) repeatedly. He seemed to want to try, but he got the “d” part and not the rest of it. Again, it is not clear if he is mimicking or randomly babbling…
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
@irene: we only speak english. being bilingual does have a big impact. our friend’s son had no words at 18 months, and now he’s fine at almost 3 (they speak only chinese at home).
you’d be surprised how quickly they pick up words once they start. charlie went from 50 to 100 in one month.
it’s a little too early to worry yet, and the ear infections could also have a big impact. did you have his hearing tested at the ent?
nectarine / 2964 posts
@Mrs. Bee: Yes they did the hearing test at ENT. They had an earplug thing that measure the vibration (?) of the eardrums. They measured both ears and while they said a normal result would be a bell curve, both of the curves on my LO’s charts are relatively flat. Then we went into a quiet room and they play sounds on the left and right speakers and LO supposed to turn his head when there’s sound (natural response), he didn’t quite do it on his left ear. They are not too concerned and said probably fluid is still trapped in his ear, and it is either going to correct itself by around now, or we’ll retest again in summer to decide if we need to put tubes in, or if other treatment is needed.

rolling over both ways -4 months

first tooth – 6 months
sitting up (getting to a sitting position on their own and staying there) – 7 months
belly crawling – never did
real crawling – 8 months

first word – Said mama at 6 months, but I think it was just babbling. Starting saying sounds with meaning closer to 10/11 months.
first steps – 11 months
walking – 11 months
potty training – ha, not even close
It’s nice to see such a wide range of “normal” – every baby really does doe things in their own time.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@irene: If he does have some hearing loss, that is likely contributing to the delay. Personally I would lean towards definitive management, because it is such an easily reversible cause of speech delay… but that’s my personal, not professional bias.
nectarine / 2964 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: what is definitive management?
And again…. I am really not too worried… I don’t want to be dragging him to specialists here and there …. yet. We do know so many families (especially Chinese + English) they don’t speak until pretty late. Maybe there is a problem with us, maybe there isn’t, but I don’t want to get panic way too early yet.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@irene: I doubt there is a problem with you guys! Much more likely that the fluid in the ear is contributing. What I was saying was that I would be unwilling to wait until summer to have ENT do anything about the fluid in the ear. They identified a problem that could be contributing to speech delay and my inclination would be to deal with that and then reassess
nectarine / 2964 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: I see…. but we really don’t want to start putting tubes in preemptively… The ENT specialist thinks it is fine as of now. Most kids outgrown this by themselves, possibly starting now. He didn’t want to put tubes in if it is not needed, that’s why he wanted to check back in summer to decide if we do need to intervene. Say if his hearing is still stay the same, fluid is still in ear, and still a ton of ear infections (which he did stop having those, Thank God), then maybe they’ll suggest something then.
As I said he didn’t go deaf or anything. He can hear conversations. Just that maybe he doesn’t hear clearly when it is noisy, or know which direction it is from…etc. Like you said possibly it interveres with speech development, but both pediatrician and ENT say wait, at this point. I don’t want to be the tiger mom and say please go put tubes in right now…. what if his speech delay isn’t a result of his ears, and after we poke holes in it and he still doesn’t speak until, say 2 years old? Not to mention I hear so many horror stories about tubes and I am so glad they didn’t make us put those in immediately.
Again…. I am really not too worried at the moment yet. I’ll see what the ped says on the 15 month check up
