Wow – Sunny has been up to a lot in the past two months! My little baby is turning into an adorable little toddler. The biggest change is that she’s walking now! After two or three months of taking a couple steps at a time, she is now fully walking since about 14.5 months. She’s very proud of herself and is feeling quite independent as she wants to practice walking all the time. This can be a bit tricky as she’s no longer content to be carried around, and her speed and direction aren’t always conducive to where the rest of us are going. Still, it’s very exciting and just too cute. She is loving how easy it is to cart toys around now and I think she’s getting more attached to her bedtime stuffed animals now that she can take them on adventures with her. I’m hoping that she’ll be a bit gentler on her pants now; all her leggings have dirt stained knees from crawling for months.
At 13 months Sunny’s sleep was a disaster; she was going down easily but up to nurse multiple times a night again. After a family holiday we resleep-trained and fully night weaned. Then a week later we moved her in with her big sister and they’ve been sharing a room ever since. Sunny usually naps from 12:30 to around 2, and then goes down for the night at 7:00. She usually sleeps perfectly all night long but wakes early. She is a fan of 5:00 but I am not! I’ve been trying to tape down their blackout shade so that she won’t notice the morning light and it seems to be working. She sleeps past 6 unless Ria fiddles with the tape (the window is next to her bed). Even though I’m having trouble getting to bed early enough, I’m still enjoying a better night’s sleep. Happily, Mr SH is a morning person, so he often gets up with Sunny and lets me sleep another hour or so.
Sunny is getting better and better at communicating. She can say “mommy” (usually while crying), “daddy” (her favourite person by far), “kitty” (which applies to all animals), and still “no”, “oh no”, “hi”,”yep”. She says “thank you” when I give her something which seems amazing to me; we’ve been drilling it into Ria the past couple months so I guess Sunny picked it up. I keep thinking that we should have done sign language with her as she’s very good at gesturing to communicate, but I can’t seem to remember to do it consistently enough. I feel like we are on the verge of a language explosion. We shall see!
Sunny got two teeth this week bringing her to 10. She’s teething like a monster still and I see a molar at the surface of her gums. I guess it’s better to get it all over with at once? Ria had all her teeth already at this age, so I’ve been assuming she’s teething every time she’s cranky, but she really is now! She’s eating well and is still on her little growth curve. She’s in the 50th percentile for height and the 15th for weight at just under 20 lbs. People always say that she’s so tiny, but I think they just think she’s older because of her hair. I actually broke down and cut the back last month as it was really scraggly. I was sad to see her bouncy little ponytail go, but it’s much neater now.
The only downside of toddlerhood is that she’s learned to throw tantrums. These usually occur around 4:30 pm when she simply cannot understand why we can’t just eat supper already! She is a pathetic little heap and the more you try and cheer her up, the angrier she gets. Other triggers are picking her up when she wants to walk on her own (such as, all the time in public…) and stealing her toys. The usual. I don’t remember Ria being like this so young, but I may just have forgotten.
I love my snuggly little girl so much. She gives wonderful hugs and will place her hands on either side of your face and pull you in for a big kiss. She’s the sweetest toddler a mommy could want!

Your photos of your kiddos are my favourite!!
I’m so happy to hear that Sunny is walking! She’s a few weeks older than my little guy but she became mobile much earlier. My LO has holes in all of his pants (he really motors!) so I can’t wait until he is walking too. You give me hope!

@Sammyfab: I really thought it would be younger because she crawled fairly young. I guess they just do things when they feel like it!
