Last summer, we found out the hard way that Lil’ CB is allergic to mosquito bites. They are not at all life-threatening to him, but they do cause discomfort and relatively alarming localized swelling for a few days. Unfortunately, we discovered this allergy after Lil’ CB took a ‘squito (as he calls them) bite to the face, on his cheek. Which means he spent a few days last June looking like this:
(This was snapped after the swelling went down a bit — when he first woke up in the morning, he was barely recognizable on one side! And…we may or may not have jokingly called him the Phantom of the Opera throughout the day…you can say it, we’re horrible!)
At first, like any good momma, I totally freaked out. I called the on-call doctor (because, as luck would have it, this happened over the weekend), and she told me to give Lil’ CB some Benadryl and to keep an eye on it. And that if it got worse, I was to take him to Urgent Care for some steroid shots. On his face.
And of course, like most situations, after the unnecessary freak-out, things got better on their own, albeit slowly. Within 3-4 days, Lil’ CB’s face was back to normal and all that was left was a little scar from the initial bite. I scheduled an appointment with the allergist and she gave us a prescription for a topical steroid cream (fluticasone propionate — the same steroid in Flonase) to reduce the swelling should another bite happen.
Like most allergies, the way to avoid another reaction is prevention. And since there was absolutely no way of keeping my little guy indoors all summer long (unless I wanted a riot on my hands), I had to find a way to keep mosquitoes away from Lil’ CB, and preferably a way that was relatively free of harsh chemicals directly on his skin.
So, like any good momma, I took to Instagram and posted a snap of Lil’ CB’s swollen face. And of course, my awesome momma friends came to the rescue! In fact, it was Mrs. Paintbrush who first shared that she also has similar reactions to mosquitoes (I had never heard of it before!) and clued us in to insect repelling bands that can be worn around wrists or ankles or attached to belt loops. A few days later, I opened my mailbox and found a package from that sweet Mrs. Paintbrush containing a few of these bad boys:
(Bug Band)
That afternoon, I looped one around Lil’ CB’s ankle and headed to the park. He came back bite free! But the real test came when we went out for dinner and sat outside to eat. Mr. Cowboy and I ended up with bites all over our legs, but Lil’ CB did not have a single mosquito bite anywhere — those blood suckers really did stay away!
After that, I was sold and Lil’ CB wore these Bug Bands on his ankles all summer long, and the one time he did get bitten again was the one time I sent him outside sans Bug Band. I’m a believer! As an extra measure of protection, I do spray his clothes with bug repellent if I know we’re going to be outside for an extended period or if I know we’ll be somewhere that is mosquito heavy — I spray his clothes before he puts them on and let them air dry outside for bit as well. But, for the most part, we have been extremely pleased with the Bug Band and we’re thankful to have a quick and painless way to keep those ‘squitoes away from Lil’ CB. And, because they seem to work so well, I think I’ll be snatching up a few more for me and Mr. Cowboy so we don’t have to use bug repellent on ourselves!
How do you stay ‘squito free?

That band is awesome! I’m going to have to order some of those for the kids!

I have the same reaction from insect bites of all kinds, and am hesitant to use bug spray this summer since I’m pregnant. Thanks for sharing! I will be getting a few of those in addition to my citronella candles and tiki torches.

My brother also has the same allergy and my parents also found out the hard way when they were away camping when he was a toddler (before I was born). Now, he’s 35 years old and he still swells up like a monster at every bite! But it’s not at all life-threatening as you said.

Totally adding those bands to my favorites list for when DS is here because Texas is like mosquito heaven during the summer time! For adults, we light mosquito coils when we’re outside. I’m interested in trying out those new repellants where you just clip on your belt though! I’m not a kid running around so the bulkiness doesn’t look like it will bother me too much.

I’m a mosquito magnet. I’m going to give this a try! Thanks!

I was also allergic to bites as a kid.
My parents used a lot of skin so soft on my when I was younger for shorter trips outside. Also, to help the itch go away faster, you can old either hot or cold on the spot. I will get a washcloth wet and put it in the microwave and then hold it on the spot as long as I can stand it. It draws it out and the itch goes away faster. It is the only thing we found that actually “heals’ versus “soothes”.

We just got back from st. barths and everyone is covered head to toe (upwards of 40) in bites….EXCEPT DD! She didn’t get a single bite the entire time and we did not once apply repellent. She must have magic blood. I on the other hand have all sorts of ugly swollen bites

I’ve had bites like that, as an adults. But I don’t think I am particularly allergic– just regular allergic, I guess– I think it was because I got bit while I was sleeping, so the suckers had all the time in the world to bite my face. I’ve woken up with a swollen eye like that, and a swollen lip. It happened when I just started a new job and I had to subtly convince people I wasn’t getting hurt at home because it looked really bad!

I’m not allergic to mosquito bites, but they do love me. This sounds great. Thanks for sharing!

These bands sounds awesome, do you know if they keep other bugs (non biting ones like no-see-ums or gnats) away too?
I was going to get some citronella for our deck, but I am going to look for candles (and maybe something else all together I haven’t figured it out) rather than oil after I read about Citronella poisoning at this site http://megandmartinmen.blogspot.com/2012/03/p-s-citronella-oil-kids.html

Great info! I’m going to try these. We use bubble and bee organic repellant and have had good success.

Those bands sounds awesome! My sister and I are allergic to mosquito bites. Our bite sites swell up like golf balls, just like pool lil CB!
I’m definitely going to be giving that bug band a try. I’ve never heard about them before.

I’m ordering a bunch of these RIGHT. NOW.

@Mrs.Maven: i think so! at least that’s what the packaging says!

It’s called Skeeter Syndrome. I have it. About 15 minutes into a bite (even if I don’t scratch it) it swells. After a few days of swelling, it ends up looking like a HUGE bruise. They are always hot to the touch and it’s why I HATE rain in the summer.
For the home I use mosquito baits that traps mosquitos in the container and all of their eggs so they don’t multiply near my home. I have a few outside our house in the front and back. I use bug repellent and do not wear perfume in the summer. I also make sure to keep fruits I throw away in a tightly sealed bag because the sweetness is some fruits attract mosquitos.
Good luck to your cute son.

@aegie: yes! super hot to the touch!
i will have to look into those traps! except i’ll have to make sure the mr. is in charge of disposing of them…;)

I need 80 of these. I was outside for maybe 5 hours tops this past weekend and I have bug bites from head to toe. I’m not allergic to them but come on. I even have bug bites on my neck. Three of them.

My sister got bitten one summer and the bites swelled to the size of dessert plates (she was 17 at the time), so I will have to look into those bands for her!

Ok, I just went to add some to my cart of amazon and saw some scary pictures of a little girl’s arm with burns on it from the band. Is that real? The reviewer said it gave her daughter chemical burns. I know some of those reviews are bogus, and your review made me want to try the bands, but now I’m scared!

Do you know if babies/toddlers can wear them, or if they have to be on top of clothing?

Poor Little CB! Mosquitos are a part of life down here in TX. I just bought bug bands recently at a friend’s recommendation. I haven’t tried them yet, but am a little concerned about @mrs. tictactoe: ‘s post about chemical burns! I guess I will really have to keep an eye on how they are doing with them. Aside from that, we have a citronella plant on our patio, and we also use various brands of bug spray – Jason Naturals, Burts Bees, and Honest Company.
blogger / nectarine / 2687 posts
@T-Mom: @mrs. tictactoe: i suppose it could be true if you have an adverse reaction to citronella! if you’re worried about it, you could also loop it around a belt loop or shoelace!
ETA: oops, i guess it’s geranium extract, not citronella!

@Freckles: CB was 2 last summer and he was fine. i would put it around a baby’s ankle to avoid it going in the mouth…unless your LO sucks his toes!
pomelo / 5257 posts
Thanks for posting this! I have the same problem. It’s weird because it doesn’t happen to every bite (are there different types of mosquitos?) but a lot of my bites will swell up huge and get hot and painful. I had to get a huge shot once when my entire lower leg blew up — not fun! I will definitely have to try this, and I’m glad it’s worked for you and your LO!
blogger / pear / 1964 posts
As per the bug bands site, the bands use an extract from geranium oil -> “Savvy folks have been planting geraniums in their window boxes for centuries, using the natural properties of the flowers to repel bugs. Today, the hard data exists that proves that the use of geraniums is more than a tradition passed down from generation to generation. Geraniol, a powerful ingredient extracted from geranium oil through a unique refining process, does indeed provide a natural – and extremely effective – insect repellent.”
I can see how it might cause a burn, but it’s got to be better than DEET.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: That’s a good idea!
honeydew / 7488 posts
@Mrs. Cowgirl: Ah, makes total sense that it could be a citronella thing. I’ll take a closer look at the ingredients, thanks!
ETA: Oops just saw mrs. tricicyle’s post and saw that its generanium. Anyway, still good to know what’s in the stuff and compare to any sensitivities.
blogger / nectarine / 2687 posts
@MrsSCB: Yep, I don’t think it’s all mosquitoes, either. For CB, it seems to be the smaller ones that have the greatest (or worst?!) effect!

I must tell my brother about these, he has the same allergy.

OMG I hate mosquitos!!! Poor CB! He looks so cute though!
pomelo / 5607 posts
Wow, I had no idea that could happen! Glad to have a warning so I won’t freak if our LO winds up like that! I’m actually the opposite, completely not allergic so I can get bitten a hundred times and won’t have any itching/bumps (anyone who reacts at all is technically allergic, just people like your LO are more severely so), so I never even think about repellent methods!
blogger / persimmon / 1398 posts
Just now seeing this and giggling since I think you know how I stay ‘squito free!

@T.H.O.U.: omg totally going to try this on my bites. I have a mosquito bite allergy too.
Totally going to order some of these for next year! Or do u think I can still use them now lol. My daughter and I are both o+ and mosquitoes love us. They don’t really touch my hubby and my son.
