Whether or not your little one is going back to school, most likely they will need a few fall items. In most places the weather is usually still pretty warm, or it’s just slightly all over the place. Keeping that in mind — plus comfort, looking cool, and budget friendliness — I wrapped up a few tips and styled a few boys’ and girls’ outfits for fun inspiration.
First let’s talk about how cute little girls are all decked out in new back to school duds! Fall is by far my favorite “dressing” season. The little layers and little tights are a special kind of cute that only fall can bring.
Leggings are probably the most comfy pair of bottoms in a little closet, and I think they’re okay as pants for little people. Like most things, clothing rules just don’t apply the same to them as they do to us, and when something is this comfortable and cute, it can’t be wrong. image via szafeczka.
OUTFIT ONE: tee – shirt – backpack – leggings – boots
Layers, just like for little boys is the best way to dress for a season that can be so fickle with the weather. She can take a layer off as the day gets warmer, or if she gets it a bit dirty. image via brian and nephew.
OUTFIT TWO: fleece jacket – jeans – beanie – blouse – shoes
Don’t pack away the shorts! Layer them over a pair of tights and instantly you have a cute cool weather outfit – okay you might need to add a top and shoes. image via scotch r’belle.
OUTFIT THREE: sweatshirt – skort – vest – tights – boots
Maybe she really wants to wear that pretty summer skirt, or dress – but the weather just isn’t being friendly. Or you want her to be appropriately dressed for all school activities. Layer it over a pair of pants, leggings if you please, but why not try a pair of skinny jeans. I mean, look how adorable this tutu looks over jeans! image via milk magazine.
OUTFIT FOUR: vest – beanie – knee high socks – top – shoes – dress
And now for the boys! It can be hard to dress them in the fall. Sometimes the mornings are cold, but by recess it’s like summer out there. A vest is a great go to, paired with shorts (for when you know it’s going to be warm) or pants (for the cold to sorta warm later days). image via crewcuts.
OUTFIT ONE: vest – shirt – pants – hat – sneakers
Layering is best for chilly days. And great for packing an extra shirt, without actually packing it. He eats a little messy at lunch? No problem, just take off a layer. Get’ a little crazy with the paint? No problem, take off or put on a layer. Great for warmth and cleanliness. image via brain and nephew.
OUTFIT TWO: sweatshirt – shirt – jeans – backpack – boots
Mix sporty with dressy and you have an instant everyday outfit. Kids love short sleeves because they’re easy to move around and just comfy. Switch out the long sleeve button down for a short sleeve one and it feels like a tee but looks a bit dressier. Mix in a baseball cap and sneakers with anything. image via heart & habit.
OUTFIT THREE: shirt – pants – shoes – backpack
Mix runners with every outfit — they make it perfect and sporty for any school activity and it just looks cool. image via scotch shrunk.
OUTFIT THREE: fleece jacket – tee – hat – jeans – shoes
I disagree that dressing girls isn’t more fun – as a mom to a boy and a girl, I think it’s equally as fun!
So what do you think, do you have a favorite outfit? Did your little one start school this year?

@Mrs. Pen: I know me too! I haven’t seen any in the boys section this season, but Zara would be my best bet for a future possibility!

@brandy: what are some good tips for a chambray shirt I bought big on a little girl besides a belt for a shirt dress?

@locavore_mama: We have rolled up sleeves, and kept it open over a dress or shirt. Or roll up sleeves again (or not) and tie at waist, but over another shirt or dress again. A belt can be uncomfy and same with tucking it in, also just over leggings a bit big could be cute!
