When Susan emailed me to introduce her maternity clothing line, Fourth Love, I was blown away by all the chic, comfortable and classic pieces in her entire line. I would honestly wear every single item in the collection! I asked Susan if she would answer some questions about dressing the pregnant body, and luckily she agreed, and she’s giving away a $150  gift certificate good towards anything at Fourth Love at the end of this post!

What do you think are the wardrobe essentials for a pregnant woman?

When you find out you are expecting, the first thing that you will need to purchase is a comfortable pair of pants because you will start seeing first changes around your waist and stomach areas. I also recommend buying a comfortable pair of denim with a belly panel which should last most women through the end of pregnancy. Once you are entering your second trimester, you will start looking for soft knit tops and dresses. Many women love the body hugging dresses and tops which make any pregnant woman look stunning. However, a loose-fitted knit is breathable, and also a great alternative that can stay in your closet past pregnancy.

When should a woman start shopping for maternity clothes?

Every woman is unique, and will carry baby differently. I have friends who will start wearing maternity clothing right away (a lot out of excitement!) and some who will endure until the last 2 months to buy any maternity clothing. However, I would not wait until the last minute. The body changes very fast, and you would not want to find out at the last minute that you do not have anything to wear for work.

What are some ways women stretch their maternity wardrobe budget?

When we first find out about our pregnancy, everything suddenly becomes about the baby. However, pregnancy is hard, and we shouldn’t forget to take care of ourselves. If you are on a budget, I don’t think you need to say goodbye to your regular clothing right away. Bella bands are a great way to help you last at least 5-6 weeks of pregnancy without immediately needing to buy maternity pants. You can also take advantage of looser fit tops which will take you through after pregnancy. However, the belly will start growing, and you will need roomier tops to help you stay comfortable.  The last tip would also to reach out to friends who are no longer pregnant, and take advantage of items that they are no longer in need. Why not?

What are your favorite pieces in your collection?

The original vee-neck top from our spring collection is now a Vee-Neck Dress. The faux leather piping updates the neckline for a sporty chic look. It’s my personal favorite.

I think every expectant woman should have some type of leather pants  this season. It dresses you up instantly, so I really enjoy making faux leather maternity pants. They’re very breathable and has a great waist band to help hold your belly.

I also love the Boyfriend Long-sleeve top. It is practical and super comfortable. My non-pregnant friends have also purchased this top. It comes in 3 different colors, and you will wear it over and over again.
