Sandra Boynton is one of those authors I had never heard of until I became a mom. I purchased my very first Boynton book, Moo Baa La La La because it topped the bestseller’s list on Amazon. Then, I found a couple more at my local Goodwill, which were also hits… so I thought I couldn’t go wrong with Boynton, and have since accumulated quite the Sandra Boynton collection! These are some of our favorites, and not-so-favorites, in the High Heels household…
1. Moo Baa La La La! – this was our very first Boynton book, and we quickly fell in love. My daughter loved having me read from this over and over again, and I didn’t mind because it was fun role playing the animal characters and making all kinds of funny noises. There is a wonderful sing-song quality to this book.
2. The Going to Bed Book – this was our second Boynton book, and another hit! It is ideal for bedtime because it walks through a sequence of events that the animals do before they have to head to bed. The illustrations are so charming and adorable. A fun, lighthearted book for your little ones who are resistant to bedtime!
3. Barnyard Dance – I love reading this book as much as my kids love listening to it. It’s a fun book with a great beat – Stomp your feet! Clap your hands! Everybody ready for a Barnyard Dance! – We get really into it and do all the little motions as we read along.
4. Happy Hippo, Angry Duck – This book teaches emotion, and in case you couldn’t guess from the title, it is about a happy hippo and angry duck. Whenever my daughter was in a bad mood, we would ask, “Are you going to be a happy hippo or angry duck today?” and it brightens her right up!
5. Pajama Time! – Another fun Boynton book with a great rhythmic beat. It is a book about having a pajama party before bed. Our favorite part is when it says Pajammy to the left, pajammy to the right. Jamma Jamma Jamma P! J! – I get all sorts of giggles from my kids and they have me read it again and again and again. Who doesn’t like a dance party before bed? This book is loads of fun for parents and kids alike!
6. Opposites – This book teaches children about opposites, with illustrations to go along with them. It’s not as rhythmic or charming as some other books, but it’s really great for the young toddler set just learning about the differences between short and tall, big and small, quiet and loud, etc. I find that I really have to be creative in changing up my voice when reading this book to get the point across of how things are opposite from one another.
M I S S E S
1. Doggies – I can’t stand this book. Not only is it my least favorite Boynton book, but it is one of my least favorite board books in general! It is supposed to teach your children numbers 1-10, and with each flip of a page a dog gets added with its respective dog sound. It gets annoying fast. Not a fan.
2. Perfect Piggies! – Very remiscent of a lot of other Boynton books – has some cute rhymes and pictures all around pigs, but it wasn’t a favorite around here and we returned it.
3. Blue Hat, Green Hat – This book teaches about colors, and showcases different animals putting on different colored clothing. On each page, one of them inevitably puts it on wrong and you say, “OOPS!” The words are short and to the point, but this isn’t very fun to read. Every page goes something like this – Blue hat, green hat, red pants, oops!
4. Fifteen Animals – This book is about 15 animals… all named BOB. It’s supposed to be silly, but it drives me crazy. This book was not my cup of tea, but it still contains all the artistic charm of other Boynton books.
What are your favorite (or not so favorite) Sandra Boynton books? Which other ones would you recommend?

Haha, everyone hates Doggies except me.
15 animals is sooooooo stupid. I picked it up once and read it and forgot about it and when I picked it up the second time, my husband said, “They’re all named Bob, remember? Can we burn that one?”
I’m going to have to see if we can get the Angry/Happy book, I hadn’t heard of that one yet!

Moo baa lalala was our first and fave too
but we love “oops” over here. C thinks it is hilarious.

I remember reading 3. Blue Hat, Green Hat – as a kid! It was a big hit in our family!

I actually enjoy the 15 animals books. It makes me giggle! Maybe I’m the only one…
I also really like the “Too Many Daves” story by Dr. Seuss, so maybe I just subconsciously want to give all my kids the same name or something. I dunno

We love Blue Hat, Green Hat! Pajama Time is a favourite for us, too.

I LOVE 15 animals! I knew Sandra Boynton from being a nanny and the four year old I watched LOVED that book and we would just giggle and laugh ourselves silly. It became a book we would quote all the time.
J’s favorite is the going to bed book – which I have memorized -and the belly button book, which isn’t on your list – but he adores it.

Sandra Boynton used to write absolutely hilarious adult books. If you are able to get a copy, her Christmastime book is simply one of the finest works of comedy I have ever read. It’s beautifully illustrated with animals, but the illustrations are hysterical. She also wrote a very very funny one about Chocolate and a pretty funny one called “Don’t Let The Turkeys Get You Down”.
My parents are huge Boynton fans and they even have (I swear) Sandra Boynton wallpaper in their bathroom. I’m looking forward to reading Boynton books to my kid, although I really just can’t wait until they are old enough to read the Christmastime one.

The going to bed book is my favorite! It’s a non negotiable part of our bedtime routine! All these other books stare at me from the back cover, so thanks for the review, I’ll definitely pick up a few of these

We love moo baa la la la and same as @Mrs. Pen: the belly button book! bee bo!

We have one Sandra Boynton book, and we love it. It’s called “Hippos Go Berserk” I’ll have to check out these others. I picked up another one of hers at the ped’s office one morning and was surprised that I didn’t like it. I guess it’s hard to be good across the board when you’re so prolific.

The Going to Bed Book is the very first one that LO recognized. She starts to grin if i recite the first line. We also recently got Hippos Go Berserk! It’s good fun.

Hippos Go Berserk is the one we have, and DD love it. Countung is the focus here, too.

Hippos Go Berserk , Pajama Time and Little Pookie are my favorites! I hate the Dogs book.

@mediagirl: LOL, we love the Doggies book, too! Actually, it’s really fun to read it with our dog in the room, because she gets really worked up and will try to accost the reader with kisses. I anticipate the kids will get a kick out of it

We LOVE Snuggle Puppy, we read it errr sing it (it is a love song afterall) every night to both boys before bed.
I also like My Oh, My Oh Dinosaurs too. We only have three that were given to us, Snuggle Puppy, Barnyard Dance and the Dinosaurs book. I think that is plenty for us.

DS LOVES the doggie book right now and makes me read it a few times before bed. It can get pretty annoying but hearing DS try to make the doggie sounds makes it fun.
We got 4 copies of Moo Baa La La La before DS was born. I’ve regifted a few and one props up our computer monitor.

We also HATE Doggies! Snuggle Puppy and Tickle Time are two more of our favs

I like Doggies! LO loves it. I do not like Snuggle Puppy.
clementine / 958 posts
We’re huge fans of Doggies, too. At 2 1/2, Doggies and Hippos Go Berserk are pretty much the only 2 board books DD still requests. Currently, she loves Boyton’s Frog Trouble. It’s a song book and CD with cute kids songs written by Boyton and sung by country and alt-country artists – it’s a fun listen/read for country music fans and their LOs.

LO loooves Pajama Time!

I’m a big fan of The Going To Bed Book and But Not The Hippopotamus, but my favorite is Barnyard Bath. It’s plastic, so we read it in the bath.

My daughter love both doggies and blue hat, green hat. The doggies book did actually teach her the numbers. I wanted her to like barnyard dance but she didn’t like that as much.

We LOVE Blue Hat Green Hat! Is the first book my soon started reading to himself. We also really like 15 Animals, it’s really good for his counting that he has become obsessed with since turning 2.
I have her Blue Hat Green Hat and Moo Baa apps on my phone- they are guaranteed melt down preventers when I get desperate and worth every penny!

We earned Barnyard Dance in a local library summer reading program it is probably my favorite book to read to my son.

We love Barnyard Dance and Hippos go Berserk! Pajama Time and Oh my Oh my Dinosaurs are cute too. The one that we can NOT stand is Tickle Time. Ugh. It’s impossible to read.

My son loves Tickle Time and Are You A Cow?

I “lost” Doggies… and am VERY glad because LMW loves all things doggy and animal sound. Haha.
We love Pajama Time, and I hate Snuggle Puppy as well because I don’t know the song and feel silly making up the melody!!
I will definitely give Boynton another try based on your “hits” recommendations!!
kiwi / 511 posts
@mrs. wagon I have no idea if there is an actual melody for Snuggle Puppy, I just went with one that seemed to work for me. My DH has a different melody than I do, fortunately for both of us our little ones are ok with us having different ones

Moo Baa La La La was our first too! My 18-month old “reads” it by himself…he says, “la la la” and “”no no no” and then giggles. Memory much?
pomegranate / 3768 posts
Thanks for the review! Moo Baa La La La was our first and she loves it. I have it memorized and when I recite it in the car she smiles! We also have Opposites but that’s just okay, I don’t think she gets it yet. I will have to check out the bedtime and pajama one!
blogger / pomegranate / 3201 posts
We love Doggies and Blue Hat Green Hat! We actually love all of her books, except the Puppy Love song one because I don’t know what tune to sing it in and it comes out awkwardly.
blogger / kiwi / 675 posts
OK we are all about the Little Pookies!! Gemma was obsessed so I bought all five for her. She loved them… I think she’s outgrown them now but I have the fondest memories.

We hate Blue Hat, Green Hat!!!!! Hate it. Drives me bonkers. We lost it at Grandma’s house…she can read it as much as she wants as long as I don’t have to lol.
Our favorite is the Belly Button Book!!

We love “not the hippopotamus” and “tickle time” the most, but almost any boyton has been a hit for us!
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
M loves Moo, Ba. We’ve been reading it together lately and he’s able to “read” half of the words to me – he says the sounds and I read the words.
blogger / pear / 1563 posts
We actually like “Doggies” as it makes Little P crack up.
And I use the Spanish version of “Blue Hat, Green Hat” when teaching and the kids LOVE it!

Motherhood has turned me into a Sandra Bynton fan girl. I am super cool
I actually like Doggies..mostly because I like to think I’m oddly good at making all the dog sounds (um, my life is sounding sadder and sadder the more I type!). And 15 animals totally makes me smile. We also love Blue Hat, Green hat, Belly Button Book, Not the Hippopotamus, all the Little Pookies, Moo Baa La La La and I read the Going to Bed Book three times every day (before each nap and before bedtime). As soon as I read “The sun has set not long ago…” she starts rubbing her eyes.

I love “Little Pookie” but my favorite is “Your Personal Penguin”! The pictures are so adorable and you can make up your own song :).

We love the going to bed book but it seriously cracks us up everytime we read after bath and pjs and brushing teeth they all go up… To exercise! WTHeck?!

Wow! Looks like the hits and misses are all across the board for Boynton, but seems like we all agree she has quite a few gems!
@tinyperson: hahah, maybe?? that’s too funny
@T.H.O.U.: whoa, boynton books have been around for that long?! she seems so modern.
@Ms.Mermaid: I had no idea she wrote adult books too, I’ll have to look into that Christmastime one, thanks for the rec!
@BKCaribBaby: @Grace: I’ve been very curious about Hippos go Berserk – that might have to be my next Boynton splurge, but we already own so many!
@mrs. wagon: I think we need to “lose” Doggies too – seriously, the book makes me want to gouge my eyes out.
@shinymama: that’s SO CUTE!
@heartonastring: Hahaha, maybe it’s time to create a Hellobee Boynton fan club! You can be President.
@dookie32: I’ve never heard of “Your Personal Penguin”!
@Theresa: I laugh at that part every time too! Such silly animals.
@mamabolt: I hear really good things about “Not the Hippopatamus”, but we already own so many Boynton books (as if you couldn’t already tell from this post, haha) that I’ve been hesitant to get more!

This post is great. We have a lot of Boyton but actually none of the ones you guys dislike except for 15 Animals which is a favorite around here

I’ll also stand up for “15 Animals.” My son loves it and grabs it to read first every night. We actually named his stuffed puppy Bob as a result…and Bob appears to be one of his first words!
We are also big fans of Hippos Go Beserk and But Not the Hippopotamus.

We like The Going to Bed Book, but we always wander why the heck they’re “going up to exercise” right before bed! I need explanations, Sandra!
