Aren’t toddlers a joy? My child often reminds me of a ticking time bomb. One minute he is happy and all is right in the world. Then you look at him the wrong way (or suggest something he doesn’t like, or don’t read his mind quickly enough) and he acts like the world is coming to an end. Here are just a few of the lovely reasons my toddler has freaked out in the past week or so.
My toddler was freaking out…
Because he didn’t want his diaper changed.
Because he wanted his coat zipped.
Because he wanted his coat off NOW!
Because he wanted to wear Daddy’s coat.
Because he didn’t want Mommy to wear her coat.
Because he didn’t want to leave the park.
Because he wanted to go to the park (in 30 degree weather).
Because he wanted to stay home.
Because he wanted to sit in the big chair instead of the high chair.
Because he wanted to get in the high chair RIGHT NOW!
Because he wanted the big fork (we were not eating at the time).
Because I told him a puddle wasn’t called a dolphin (??).
Because he didn’t want to get out of the crib.
Because he didn’t want to get into the crib.
Because he wanted the blue toothbrush…that he was holding.
Because he couldn’t put on his sock himself.
Because he wanted the sock off NOW.
Because he didn’t want his diaper changed.
Because he wanted to hold the Elmo diaper.
Because he wanted to put on the diaper himself.
Because he wanted to sit on the potty.
Because the potty is scary.
Because I wouldn’t let him run while holding an umbrella.
Because he wanted to play chase with the dog, and the dog didn’t want to get up.
Because the dog was barking.
Because the dog wouldn’t give him kisses.
Because he didn’t want water – he wanted watermelon.
Because he wanted to eat a pretzel he found on the floor at Target, and I said no.
Because he wanted to eat a Goldfish cracker he found at the park, and I said no.
Because he wanted to eat a hot dog.
Because he ate the hot dog and it was “all goneeeeeeee”.
Because he didn’t want to get into the bath.
Because he didn’t want to get out of the bath.
Because bubbles are yucky and scary.
Because I wouldn’t let him touch the “splash” he made in the potty.
Because I wouldn’t let him flush the toilet three times in a row.
Because I ate his grape after he handed me the grape and said, “here Mommy”.
Because apples have peels, and he wanted to eat it himself, but the peel is yucky.
Because he didn’t want his diaper changed.
Because he didn’t want his diaper changed.
Because he didn’t want his diaper changed.
Why is your toddler freaking out these days?

Hahaha. You know I can figure out why he’s upset about 90% of the time and 10% I just don’t know why he’s upset!
Maybe I don’t have my mommy senses in tune those times.
Last night I thought he wanted me to put together this train tracks which I did and he then he had a totally meltdown… I wonder if I put it together wrong… but I did it the same like last time… maybe he wanted it different. Sometimes toddlers are hard to read!

Love it and so accurate. Miss H is very spiteful – i.e. if she wants something and I hesitate for even a second it’s game over. Because once she senses I may not want her to have something then she absolutely doesn’t want it anymore and throws a fit. I then have to spend 5-10 minutes offering it to her, convincing her that I really do want her to have it. This also goes for if she wants to do something herself and I even remotely attempt to help out. You can never win!

I think our kids are the same kid. And apparently we all have to order the book REASONS MY KID IS CRYING. Describes exactly this.

Hahaha…bubbles are scary. Love this whole list. I see a lot of foreshadowing of this at our house, althought the diaper change fits have been alive and well for the last few months. You’d think it would feel GOOD to get a clean diaper, but who am I to try to use logic with a toddler.

I am showing this list to my husband asap. DS has few words yet and every time he freaks out, my husband asks me why he’s doing that. How should I know?!?!

haha!! I can’t think of anything specific except for all the times he has asked to “watch Elmo George” (which means either one) and I have said no. I think that might be daily. Sheesh.
They’re so funny!
pomegranate / 3388 posts
Yes, yes, yes! Also… I dread diaper changes, b/c at least half the time they are the cause of a total freak out, and DD will not just lie down on the changing table. Putting jackets, shoes, hats etc. on (or off) or wanting to put them on at inappropriate times are another big tantrum trigger for us. At least we’re not alone. Toddlers…

Oh my!! So funny from an outsider’s perspective, but can totally see how frustrating this may be from your perspective. This should be (not) fun when C gets to this age….

haha–i like the toothbrush one. i know this phase is coming and i just hope that i can find some of the same humor in it that you have (maybe not at the time that LO is wailing and stretched at on the floor crying, but later).
blogger / persimmon / 1398 posts
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. One hundred times yes. And as you know we have transition and attachment issues to boot… so, yes.
Why do we not live closer to each other so that we could let them freak out together!?
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
Hahaha! We didn’t have any freakouts today, so I’m counting my blessings. This is a day-by-day battle, right?
nectarine / 2667 posts
Oh my, thank you for this list! My husband and I were beginning to think something was seriously wrong with our child – I’m so glad to know it’s normal. Plus, we both laughed hysterically the whole time we were reading it.
I love his sad bath time face!

I love this list! At least in retrospect these tantrums are hilarious! I thought my toddler was the only one who freaked out about what design was on her Pull-Ups. Since she started wearing them, my 2-year-old has insisted on wearing only the Minnie Pull-Ups. She will freak out whenever she has to wear a Monster or Ariel, which is sadly two-thirds of the time. Curse you, Disney, and your “learning” designs!

LOL!
Some of my favourites include:
There was nothing on his nose! (?)
The snow was cold
The cat had whiskers
The chocolate ice cream she had wanted tasted like chocolate!
