At 4 and a half, Lil’ CB’s bike and basketball hoop are probably his most favorite toys. But, he hasn’t abandoned his little boy toys quite yet! Lil’ CB has definitely moved from playing with a toy for a few minutes here and there to focusing on one type of play for much longer stretches of time. He is a champ at playing independently, and here are some of the toys that have been occupying most of his time and imagination:
1) Rescue Bots: Lil’ CB recently started watching this show on Netflix — it’s a preschool/early elementary spin-off of the original Transformers with much tamer storylines. Lil’ CB loves reenacting episodes and creating new adventures for his Rescue Bots. The toys are super easy for little hands to transform and they have helped create hours of imaginative play for our little guy.
2 & 3) Imaginext Batcave and Super Friends: We got Lil’ CB this Batcave for Christmas and my sister-in-law got him Superman’s Fortress of Solitude and some other accessories to go with it. Lil’ CB’s superhero fascination and obsession is still going strong and these friendly-faced superhero toys are just right for his little hands. Both of the larger playsets have lots of different compartments and doors to play with, making the possibilities quite endless!
4) Dress-up costumes: More than playing with little superheroes, Lil’ CB loves dressing up and playing superheroes himself. So far, he’s got quite the wardrobe of costumes: Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Thor, and his favorite, Captain America, shield and all! We may or may not have gone on a few bike rides and grocery runs with the Captain in his full regalia.
5) Hotwheels: While Lil’ CB will still play with his wooden trains now and then, he has moved on to cooler and more exciting vehicles: Hotwheels! Lil’ CB loves racing his little cars and loves all of the different styles of cars. Plus, the 99 cent price tag is waaaay easier to swallow than the freaking $20-a-piece Thomas trains (did I mention I hate Thomas? )
6) Legos: For a while, I was terrified of little Legos… I was really scared of stepping those little suckers or them getting lost everywhere, and most of all, of our dog eating them and then having to clean up Lego poop. (I know.) When Lil’ CB received a big box of Legos as a gift, we held off on opening it up for a while because of these fears. But, after one (or six) too many snow days, desperate times called for desperate measures and the box was opened. Since then, Lil’ CB’s had a blast with his Legos and after a few reminders about taking care of them, he’s been really good about being responsible for the little guys!
7) Little Tikes Attach N’ Play Basketball: Lil’ CB got this basketball hoop as a gift for his second birthday. Since then it’s been hanging over his door and the best part about this hoop is that it’s adjustable, so it’s been able to grow with Lil’ CB. He loves shooting hoops and playing Horse and Pig with me and Mr. Cowboy. And sadly, even when I do try, I sometimes get beaten by my just over 3-feet opponent.
8) 16″ Bike: Lil’ CB learned to ride a two-wheeler last summer. We bought him the smallest, cheapest 10″ bike we could find because we knew that he would only be on it for a short period of time. After cruising around on this tiny bike for a while, we recently upgraded to this 16″ bike, which Lil’ CB will hopefully be able to ride for at least 2 years — he just makes the bare minimum on the height range for this bike and unless he has a major growth spurt, he should be on this bike for a while! We ended up buying the bike from REI, and their bike workshop was wonderful to work with — they adjusted the seat and handlebars to fit Lil’ CB and took they training wheels off for us, too. Lil’ CB loves his new bike and is on it anytime it’s above 40 degrees and not raining!
What are some of your preschooler’s favorite toys?

I love seeing future toys Little P will probably LOVE! He already loves his little “bikes,” and is obsessed with basketball hoops, so I think those will stay popular for quite some time.

LEGOs for sure. My oldest has the little LEGOs but I don’t like him playing with it b/c he always needs me to help him with it every minute b/c a teeny tiny piece fell off and I don’t want his little brother playing with it b/c he’ll definitely lose pieces and then my oldest will cry. I love that he plays with the duplo, though, b/c it’s big and he can build whatever he wants and his little brother can play with it at the same time.
Rescue bots are awesome too! He can transform it himself and doesn’t need my help. Can you see a pattern? LOL! It’s not that I’m 100% lazy, but b/c both boys want my attention all the time that I can’t spend a long time doing something; otherwise, the other will whine and cry.
Superheros is a bit hit too but I don’t like him watching it on the iPad or Netflix. He becomes a monster and jumps around until we have to put him in time out for being so rough and not stopping when we ask him to.

I cannot wait for the boys to start riding bikes! Such flashbacks to my childhood.
