There is no shortage of books in our house. Even when I (finally) put my foot down and tell my 3-year-old, “No, you absolutely cannot have another toy car,” chances are decent that I may still buy him a book. Unlike toy cars, you can never have too many books. (Also, books aren’t as much of a health hazard at two in the morning, when I’m tripping over Lightning McQueen and all his friends.)
In our sea of books, we have some definite standouts. If I could save just 10 of my son’s books from a fire, here are the ones that would come with me:
1. The Monster at the End of this Book We love this book for so many reasons. It’s a classic — Papa Y remembers reading it as a kid — and it’s so much fun reading it in Grover’s over-the-top voice. Little Y gets a kick out of turning each page, cackling like he’s getting away with something while Grover implores him to STOP TURNING PAGES! (As Mr. Bee notes, the iPad version is also fantastic!)
2. The Day the Crayons Quit The mark of a truly good book is that you think about it even when you aren’t reading it. At random points throughout the day, Little Y and I often pretend to be orange and yellow crayons as they argue over who’s the true color of the sun.
3. My No No No Day This book is the anthem of any child who wakes up and simply decides they hate everything — their breakfast, their shoes, their little brother. It invites a truly over-the-top narration, and because of that, it’s one I’m always happy to read.
4. Cars and Trucks and Things that Go Not gonna lie, this one kind of burns my eyeballs because there is SO MUCH STUFF, but it is probably Little Y’s all-time favorite. The spine is falling off, and the pages have been pieced together with what seems like a whole roll of tape — that’s the mark of a keeper, no? And it is kind of fun to find Goldbug.
5. Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site Nothing fancy here — just cute drawings, pleasant rhymes, and a simple goodnight story that Little Y loves. Think of it as “Goodnight Moon” for wheels-obsessed little boys.
6. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom It has rhythm. It has rhymes. It’s colorful. It teaches my kid his ABCs. And he’s loved it for two solid years.
7. The Big Blue Book of Beginner Books I love most of the “Beginner Books” series, but this might be our favorite — we especially love “Put Me in the Zoo” and “Are You My Mother?” Little Y loves to pick his story, find the page, and beg me to read just one more.
8. Should I Share My Ice Cream? We have a few of Mo Willems’ infamous “Pigeon” books, but we like the “Elephant & Piggie” series better. Should the elephant, Gerald, share his ice cream? Oh, the torture! This is another book that must be read with a lot of feeling.
9. Dragons Love Tacos This book is just the kind of offbeat, zany silliness that any 3-year-old adores. Dragons love tacos… buckets of them! Boat loads of them! But NOT THE SPICY ONES! The illustrations are great. And I find it pretty funny, too.
10. Harry the Dirty Dog There’s a reason this one has endured for so long. The drawings are charming, the story is adorable, and my son likes to take a bath so he can be all clean, “not like that dirty dog, Harry.”
Which books are your kids going back to again and again?

I bought dragons love tacos after seeing many great reviews and because Taco Tuesday is a staple in our house. I may be the only one who can’t stand reading it. I mean it’s ok – much better than some books – but I really don’t get the hype
I do LOVE LOVE LOVE The Day the Crayons Quit and Good Night Good Night Construction Site. We get many hours of entertainment out the Richard Scarry Cars book as well.
Does anyone have a book that does a great job of explaining lying to kids? WT is starting to tell lies. (I didn’t eat any cupcakes! [he had 2 or 3!]) I’d love a book that helps us in teaching him more about lying – the big ones and the little ones!

There’s a few on here that we’ve never read! Our staples are Dr Seuss. Sometimes I wish my kid would pick something with less than 9238282)383 pages.
She also loves the Biscuit series which is cute, but I can only woof! Woof! Ruff! so many times a day.

Great list! We love Day the Crayons Quit, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site. Will have to check out some of the others!
We also love the Pigeon and Elephant books, and Knuffle Bunny! Anything Mo Willems has been a hit, as well as the Llama Llama series.

@Mamaof2: we improvise a lot with “The Day the Crayons Quit”! Halfway through I’ll just start pointing at the pictures and say, “Oh no! What’s wrong with yellow crayon? Why is he mad?”… “he’s mad because he’s not the color of the sun!!”… then next page, “Uh oh… what happened to orange crayon?!?…. now he’s not the color of the sun”… it goes by pretty quickly that way. Allows my daughter to participate and really figure out what’s going on too.

In the same vein as the monster at the end of the book, is a Gover book on Hide in Seek. My son LOVES it and tries to count and everything. I love those old Sesame Street books.

On the lying books: try the Dr. Suess book “On Mulberry Street’. I find it fun to read.

We actually haven’t done too many of these books! Although we LOVE “Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site.”

We love many of these books too, especially The Monster at the End of This Book (my oldest is 4.5 and still thinks it’s hysterical) and Harry the Dirty Dog. I haven’t heard of Dragons Love Tacos but based on the title, I think both my 2 and 4 year old will like it a lot (what kid doesn’t like Dragons and tacos?).
Here’s a list that I came up with for preschoolers by cross-referencing a bunch of best-books-for-kids books to find those that are most highy and universally recommended: http://bit.ly/Xym5Zy

Thanks for this list! I’ve been on a bit of a book binge again the past couple of days. Most of these are for a toddler a bit older, but I’ve added a few to our Wish List! As for now, I always enjoy reading Madeline, Olivia, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and any Nancy Tillman books.

We love all of the books that have been mentioned. Lately we’ve been reading Epossumondas by Colleen Salley and The Day the Babies Crawled Away by Peggy Rathman every night. They are both great.

We love the day the crayons quit and chika chika!

Chika Chika is still one of my all time favorite books from Kindergarten age and I also thought the Monster at the End of this Book was THE funniest book ever. I can’t wait until the kids get a little older and can interact with furry, lovable Grover. I’ll definitely be checking out some of those other titles at the library!
