Hi! I’m thrilled to join the Hellobee blogging community!
Let me start by telling you a little bit about us. Aaron and I met our first year in graduate school, but didn’t start dating until a year or two later. I knew early on that he was someone with whom I could see myself with, not because there was some monumental moment like in the movies, but because he made me laugh like no one else can. Seven years later we got married and 9 months later Max was born!

When Aaron and I first found out I was pregnant we were overcome with disbelief (because I was still on birth control), followed by a deep sense of anxiety. While we always knew we eventually wanted to have kids, we weren’t prepared for the news to come so quickly; 2 months after our wedding and 1 day after we bought our first house. Admittedly, instead of celebrating and embracing what was to come, my initial reaction was to mourn the end of our twosome life. It sounds silly because we were both in our 30s and no one was telling us we were too young, but somehow being students until our late 20s lulled us into feeling like we weren’t real adults yet. But now that Max has been in our lives for just over a year, I truly couldn’t imagine life without him.
The first year of parenthood encompassed some of my highest highs and my lowest lows. I know it’s impossible to predict how your life is going to change once you have a baby, but I wasn’t prepared for how trying some times would be. When Max was born we were so focused on making it through the first few weeks, that, as silly as this sounds, we barely thought about what he would be like as a fully functional human being. But at one year old, he is walking, babbling up a storm and is developing a personality all of his own. Watching him take in the world around him has been one of my greatest (*and most exhausting!*) joys. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences, both good and bad, as I continue to figure out the ins and outs of parenting an energetic toddler. I hope some of my experiences will be as helpful to you as many of yours have been to me.
In addition to blogging, I’m a scientist involved in the human microbiome project, which studies how changes in the normal bacteria present on our bodies affect human disease. I’m particularly interested in understanding how the bacterial communities in the vagina relate to women’s reproductive health and contribute to preterm birth. I love talking about it so if you would like to know more please ask!
And finally, why Mrs. Ice Cream? To say I have a sweet tooth is a major understatement. When it comes to sweets, I typically find that more is better!

Welcome! I was reading the other day about swabbing csection babies right after delivery and found it interesting. I look forward to learning more about your family and research!

Welcome! Max is gorgeous!
@Happygal: I’d read about the swabbing…I had a C-section with DD and forgot to ask about it. She had terribly painful, constant gas the first few weeks (and she still has constant gas), and I wondered if it was because she didn’t get to pick up my bacteria on her way out.

Welcome! Your story is actually very similar to mine except I lost that baby. It gave us time to have the life and do the things we had planned on before having or children but it broke my heart too in a way I never knew it could be broken and gave me anxiety for much of my son’s pregnancy. I think about “peanut” even now especially as I see his/her’s younger siblings now wondering how they would all be with one more friend to play with. Welcome again and Max is adorable!

I would LOVE to see a post on your thoughts about the very clean way that we live and how you’re encouraging your child to develop healthy gut flora. My degree is in molecular biology, and it’s made me nuts about keeping my child from over cleanliness. She’s the healthiest kid I know, and I can’t help but wonder how much that contributes. I’d love to hear your opinions on it!

I am actually currently part of an on-going study that looks at exactly what you are studying! I am almost 26 weeks pregnant and I have provided two sets of swab samples so far (one around 12 weeks and the other at 22 weeks ). They are tracking the bacteria throughout my pregnancy and will swab me and baby after birth. I am interested to hear more!

@lovehoneybee: Right now research has shown that there are initial differences in a babies microbiome depending on mode of delivery but how those differences translate to health are less clear. Hopefully in the next few years we will be able to answer some of those questions!

Thank you all for the welcome messages! I’m thrilled to see how much interest there is in the microbiome! I will definitely plan a post to discuss it in a little more detail.

Welcome! Your baby is adorable! I’m not a scientist but I find it really interesting. I had my son for “unexplained” reasons 6 weeks early so I’m always wondering why and hoping for more science to help explain preterm births – can’t wait to hear more!

Nice to meet you! I also have a sweet tooth :).
I am curious to know about group b strep positive, use of antibiotics and microbiome. My son was born via csection 4 yrs ago and he gets sick alot, has allergy issues, I wonder if it has to do with delivery. I also wonder if a mother is on antibiotics for gbs, if that also affects microbiome, both vaginal and csection.
I am having a repeat csection in 3 weeks, my OB and hospital doesn’t allow vbac, I looked into swabbing and also read or may have heard a podcast from Chris Kessler about putting infant probiotic powder on nipples so baby can get probiotics. Looking forward to reading your posts.

welcome! Adorable family! Jumping on the microbiome train, my son D has short gut syndrome and his doc took some cultures from his gut to contribute to her study
