I am fairly new to using essential oils with my children. We have been using them for around a year and I’m just starting to work out what works for us! My children do not have any health problems so we use essential oils for wellness, for concentration, creating calm and for relaxation.
I often put a couple of drops into our play dough which provides a lovely sensory experience (it’s important that children do not eat the play dough). I often add a couple of drops of essential oils to our massage oils and I also love to make our own room spray. But most frequently we enjoy essential oils in our ultrasonic diffuser. Have you used an ultrasonic diffuser before?
It’s fantastic to use around children because it is cool and does not heat up. This also means the vapour is cool. For younger children I would still keep it out of reach. I put a couple of drops of our favourite essential oils in the diffuser which holds 100ml of water. It’s so easy to use. It is really quiet and make the room smell so good! Our ultrasonic diffuser also works as a night light. We can keep the light on one colour or rotate through the whole range of colours.
Mrs Piñata has written two fantastic articles about The Basics of Essential Oils and Essential Oils for Kids and Babies. We use lavender and dream blends the most. However I use a lot of lemon and orange. Our favourite essential oils include;
- Lavender – an excellent all rounder, calming and relaxing, to encourage sleep.
- Lemon, Orange, Mandarin – helps with concentration and focus, stimulating for the mind. I love all citrus and find it uplifting and refreshing.
- Spearmint – refreshing and sweet scent, stimulating and uplifting.
- Dream Blend: Lavender, Geranium and Ylang Ylang – to encourage a restful sleep.
- Happy Blend: Orange, Lavender, Patchouli and Rose – to promote calm, wellness and happiness.
Some essential oils are not suitable when pregnant or for infants and young children. Check with your supplier or medical practitioner if unsure.
Please tell me if essential oils work for your family, and if so, what essential oils do you use?

I’ve used similar ones as you. Also peppermint and ginger helped me when I had morning sickness and also peppermint when my son has fevers or congestion. I use an oil diffuser too. What is your recipe for room spray?

@Teachermama: I add a couple of drop to distilled water, in a small spay bottle (probably 50ml). I don’t add alcohol like I’ve seen recommended however I have noticed that some oils seem to dissipate better than others. I love to use a dream blend in a spray or as a pillow spray.

We have the same type of diffuser but I never thought to use it in our child’s room. Maybe we will start trying Lavender at bedtime!
