Creating a cozy home for our family has become more important as my kiddos outgrow the baby stage. Furniture pieces that are functional, reflect our taste, and stand-up to kiddos bopping around the house are what make our house feel like home. Here’s my list of favorite furniture for a household with little kids.

Fold-Down Sleeper Chair –  This is my favorite piece of furniture in the house for the kids. It has an extra wide seat, perfect to read with your little one. Actually, both my kiddos can squeeze in there for a story. It folds down, and they can drape a blanket over the top for their forts. Sometimes, they leave it partially propped up to have tunnel to climb through. Now that BeBe is older, it folds down as a comfortable space for a sleep-over with the cousins. Both my kiddos (and the dog) love playing on this chair.

Wooden chest/storage – We bought this pre-kids as a coffee table. Now it serves as a make-shift window seat or desk for the kiddos, and I can store puzzles and board games in there. Someday, when my kiddos are not tempted to jump off the couch, I’ll move it back as a coffee table. It has sharp corners, but with corner protectors and foam stripping for the edges, the kids were fine. You can find affordable wooden chests at the big box stores, antique stores, or if you’re really crafty, DIY is an option.

Vanity Table/Desk –  I shop antique stores frequently and found a vanity desk for $20 that had been painted with chalk paint. I loved the color and figured BeBe could use this as a desk for her room. It’s worked out really well. She loves to play with coins, seashells, Legos and all the other little toys that are choking hazards for her little brother. With this desk, she can leave those little items out and her baby brother can’t reach them to put in his mouth. This also freed up my dining room table. There are lots of options for finding these including antique stores, IKEA, box stores, and DIY.

Ikea Table – When BeBe was a toddler and preschooler, this table was craft central. It was perfect for painting, and I even let her paint the table legs. It was affordable and easy to move if needed. Now, we use it as extra seating for little ones when we have a barbeque or pizza night with friends and family.

Bed Railings – We have a beautiful antique bedframe for BeBe, but when she first moved into her big girl bed, she seemed so tiny in it. It was so high, and I worried about her falling out in the middle of the night. We installed the bed rails and it made the bed safer. We kept the rails up for when her baby brother was in the climbing toddler stage. She no longer needs the rails, but I’m hanging on to these for when our little guy transitions to a twin bed.
